The Runner's thread

One mile recovery run today. Getting loose so I can stretch and trying to get back into shape. Hoping wearing actual running shoes help keep from injury, shin splints, etc.

Ran about 1.5 yesterday.

Trained for 6 months for my first marathon and then started having knee pain (ITB) come back 3 weeks before the race. Its Oct. 18th. I'm back in physical therapy now and I think its getting better, but I haven't run since Sunday and I'm not sure how far I can get before the pain kicks in.

I'm kind of desperate at this point and open to any suggestions... does anyone have any tips/tricks that can get me through this race? My conditioning is fine and I can finish if not for an orthopedic breakdown. Ideally I wish I could just get some sort of injection before the race to numb my knee for about 4-5 hours.

Anyone?

Have you tried any sort of brace?
Or that fancy tape stuff?

I know this gets thrown out every time, but are you running in shoes designed for your feet/body/running form?

Are you a heel striker or mid foot striker? There is so much less pressure to joints with a midfoot strike.

Ran this morning and unfortunately its getting worse. Been in PT all week (the same guy who solved this problem before)... and now I can't even get a few miles without the pain coming.

To answer your questions - I have tried a few braces... none of them seemed to do much. Also tried a few wraps, none of which I could seem to get to stay on throughout a long run. They just fall down or bunch up around the knee.

I have tried KT tape. Seemed to feel good, but ultimately did not stop the pain from coming after several miles.

I did go to a running store and have them look at my gait and recommend a shoe. It was about a year ago and I have changed shoes since then... I've been running in Hoka One Ones and have felt GREAT (best ive ever done, most mileage, etc.). Done really well up until a few weeks ago and it seems the wheels have just fallen off. RIGHT BEFORE my race, damnit.

I'm a mid-foot strike.

I've never been so frustrated/disappointed in my life. I really thought I was over the hump with this issue. And I've spent so much time and energy, and money, training and preparing my body. Been in many, many physical therapy sessions... been through 4 pairs of shoes training... spent money on gear... and I'm very likely not going to be able to finish this race. I don't know if I'll be able to even do the half at this point.

I'm at a loss joel. Maybe if kiddie shows up he can offer expert advice. Best of luck man. I lost out on the Country Music Full when I tore my calf, so I've been there.

9.8 miles through the hilly farm country of Java, VA. The hills provided some spectacular views, so I'll take out. 1:36:24

Ran about a mile flat today. I am starting to feel in shape, so I will time my next one. I am a new runner basically, so I am working on my form. I tend to want to run really fast, so I am slowing down and thinking about distance more. I am going to start increasing my distances by about .2 or .3 miles every other run.

To Joel - Wish I had some advice for you man. I've never had knee trouble, but I've been too injured to play(football), so I know the feeling. Best of luck to you man.

Ran .01 miles four days ago. Yup, took five steps and suddenly my lower right calf tightened up like a drum. Tried a few more steps - hurt a bunch. Walked back to the house and been doing bike rides and such since then to stay active. Used to happen after a few miles every now and then several years ago and I'd have to skip a day or two - but hasn't repeated until now. Feels like it will be ready to go again tomorrow. Maybe the next day.

I have this problem. I tend to want to run fast and it kills my distance. Something I found that worked for me is one day to a quick 2 mile run. Run as hard as I can for that two miles and be done for that day. The very next day I would run for distance. For some reason I would get that distance in.

Yeah. That sounds like a good way to mix it up. Might try that in a couple of weeks.

Ran 1.26 today. Going for 1.5 and maybe further Friday. Feeling in shape.

Nice work. You will get there. Don't get discouraged. You will get where you want to be with hard work. :good!:

Welp, I finished the marathon. But my knee hurt the whole time. However, I was still making good time until about mile 18 or so, when other problems started to crop up (likely because of overcompensating for the knee). My foot hurt, calf was killing me, knee completely locked up. At about 21 I stopped to stretch out and then couldn't get going again because I started cramping (which is unreal because I drank and ate ALL DAY yesterday). I would essentially just run until a cramp hit... stop and stretch it out and walk a bit then run until another cramp. The last 6-7 miles were simply brutal.

But I did finish it in 5 hours. It would have been 4:30 or so if not for the breakdown... which I would have been exceedingly pleased with. But considering the pain I endured, I think I just have to be happy with the finish.

Side note - thank you to everyone who helped, offered advice, or just encouraged on this thread.

Nice work Joel. You finished it and that's all that matters. This will give you a base line to improve the next time you run a marathon. Now go heal up and get back out there when you are 100%. Congrats on finishing. Its something to be proud of.

5 hours is impressive no matter. To go through all that you did and still finish in 5 hours is phenomenal.

7 miles today in just over 63 minutes.

I'm not ready for the Marine Corps Marathon Sunday, but I think I can keep it around 5 to 5 1/2 hours. I should have opted out, but being the 40th edition, I couldn't bring myself to back out.

First official day of 1/2 marathon training for 12 weeks. Only ran 2.25 miles but starting slow.

Great job man. I don't think I could ever run a full marathon
