Trained for 6 months for my first marathon and then started having knee pain (ITB) come back 3 weeks before the race. Its Oct. 18th. I'm back in physical therapy now and I think its getting better, but I haven't run since Sunday and I'm not sure how far I can get before the pain kicks in.
I'm kind of desperate at this point and open to any suggestions... does anyone have any tips/tricks that can get me through this race? My conditioning is fine and I can finish if not for an orthopedic breakdown. Ideally I wish I could just get some sort of injection before the race to numb my knee for about 4-5 hours.
Anyone?
Have you tried any sort of brace?
Or that fancy tape stuff?
I know this gets thrown out every time, but are you running in shoes designed for your feet/body/running form?
Are you a heel striker or mid foot striker? There is so much less pressure to joints with a midfoot strike.
Ran about a mile flat today. I am starting to feel in shape, so I will time my next one. I am a new runner basically, so I am working on my form. I tend to want to run really fast, so I am slowing down and thinking about distance more. I am going to start increasing my distances by about .2 or .3 miles every other run.
To Joel - Wish I had some advice for you man. I've never had knee trouble, but I've been too injured to play(football), so I know the feeling. Best of luck to you man.
I have this problem. I tend to want to run fast and it kills my distance. Something I found that worked for me is one day to a quick 2 mile run. Run as hard as I can for that two miles and be done for that day. The very next day I would run for distance. For some reason I would get that distance in.
Welp, I finished the marathon. But my knee hurt the whole time. However, I was still making good time until about mile 18 or so, when other problems started to crop up (likely because of overcompensating for the knee). My foot hurt, calf was killing me, knee completely locked up. At about 21 I stopped to stretch out and then couldn't get going again because I started cramping (which is unreal because I drank and ate ALL DAY yesterday). I would essentially just run until a cramp hit... stop and stretch it out and walk a bit then run until another cramp. The last 6-7 miles were simply brutal.
But I did finish it in 5 hours. It would have been 4:30 or so if not for the breakdown... which I would have been exceedingly pleased with. But considering the pain I endured, I think I just have to be happy with the finish.
Side note - thank you to everyone who helped, offered advice, or just encouraged on this thread.
