The Runner's thread

I am just a little over a month out from my first race of 2017. Doing the Tobacco Road Half Marathon. After that I am doing a little St. Paddy's Day 8k and maybe a local 5k night run before my big race of the spring. I am doing the Flying Pig 3 way challenge which is a 5k and 10k on Satruday and followed by a half marathon on Sunday.

If the spring goes well I am going to have to sit down and come up with my first full marathon training plan for later part of the year. I really want to do the Memphis St. Jude Marathon.

What does everyone else have on tap for 2017 so far?

I did St. Jude last year, probably the best marathon there is. If you need help with a plan, there is a pretty good one at marathon rookie.net

I'm doing the Shamrock Dolphin Challenge-an 8k and half marathon over St Paddy Weekend. The following weekend I'm part of an ultra team running in the Palmetto 200 from Columbia to Charleston

The Palmetto 200 sounds like fun. I have never done any of the relay stuff but I like the idea. I am also planning on doing my first Ragnar trail run in October.

Have only run twice all year, but I had been working on an event yo benefit the new local chapter of Girls on the Run nonprofit empowering young girls through running. Proud to say that almost 300 locals came together on Saturday to dress up in red dresses, run, and get blackout drunk. We raised $13,000! It was over twice as much as we've raised for any charity in the past.

Also, I'm extremely sore from only ~3 miles...

Not fast anymore but I completed my first 5k in over a year in 27:22. Last time in a 5k was almost 9min slower so I think the last couple of months have paid off (that and dropping 40lbs)

Garmin sent me a new watch.

Glad they did that for you Yankee. It was the right thing for them to do. I have only used Garmin for my GPS watches and haven't had any issues with them yet but that makes me feel a little better if I ever do though...

I've owned a ton of Garmin products (both for military and not) over the years and never had a problem, this was my first.

I am sure you have talked about the issues in past pages, but what was wrong with it? I have a Garmin 910xt. It works good outside of uploading data, which is awful. Over the past few months it fails about 80% of the time. I really wish I could just plug it into the computer and not have to use the ANT device or whatever they call it.

Unrelated to the watch, I started training for a tri a few months ago and I think I screwed up my IT band. I am to the point where I can't even run without my left side hurting. No problems with cycling, and it doesn't bother me much for swimming.

It wasn't tracking my distance and pace correctly.

22:20 for the 5K. A little slower the I'd like but the first mile was uphill. Still finished in the Top 10-15 or so.

Anybody ever sign up for virtual runs? I'm about to run my first, the Pi Day 5K by FitFam.

I've done two. Kinda boring doing a "race" by yourself.

5.2 in 39:35

My right knee is hurting pretty bad, may need to try and rest it (though I have a 10 miler Saturday).

It is different. The presence of other runners definitely keeps me motivated. But, the swag you get with some of these virtual runs is pretty cool.

You've got 3 days to rest your knee. That's probably not enough, but if you stay off it and pop ibuprofen like skittles, you'll power through.

Never done a virtual run, can't imagine I'd enjoy it as much. Shamrock 8k Saturday followed by a half on Sunday. The following Friday and Saturday I'll be part of a six person ultra team in the Palmetto 200 (205 miles, I'm doing 35 of them). Following Saturday, I'm doing another half.

1:53:53 half marathon today, 00:41:55 8k yesterday in the Shamrock. Weather was brutal today, mid thirties, 20+ mph sustained winds and rain. I might take a two hour hot shower!!!
