The Runner's thread

So I've been out walking and now running very short distances while out. Trying to walk and incorporate short runs in about 3 miles each morning.

Do any of you run with headphones. What kind? Mine just aren't staying in while running. Thanks.

I have wireless beats. They hook over your ears. I've had them for almost 2 years and no complaints.

I have wireless Yurbuds -- good sound, but they don't stay in place very well with either one of the rubber earpiece sizes. The added weight of the little wireless box seems to bother them, a problem I never had with my wired yurbuds. My son has the over-ear Beats, and they work better, just a little annoying to me rubbing on my earlobes. I'll probably end up getting some over-the-ear ones soon.

I'm pretty sure my running career is going to see a huge drop off.

While the Army has its advantages, doctors are not one. They typically have zero clue until it's too late. Something is wrong with my knee that won't be fixed by stretching or PT.

I hate to hear that Yankee. You have any idea what it may be? Hopefully you can take a couple easy summer months and it will heal.

Still the same thing from a while back? Do you have the option of seeing a civilian doc? I have an ortho friend in K-town that would almost certainly help you out, given the situation.

I think it's my meniscus. Not likely, we don't really get to take it easy haha.

Unfortunately I do not. I'm sure I can get an MRI in a month or 2.

That sucks. Yeah, sounds like you need a scan. Well, if something changes and you can get to KOC, my friend will take good care of you. He's great with knees and shoulders. I don't know that he could help with the actual cost of the MRI, but I'm sure he would be willing to work with you on the rest, given your service.

Muddy 5k trail race this morning. Finished in top 10! Times haven't been posted yet, though. Conditions were sloppy and thankfully I picked the right shoes. Lots of people slipping and falling. Pretty much the only reason I did so well. Also my first run of the year... 😬

This may be a silly question, but how does a trail race work? Do they let each person start at a different time and keep time with a chip? Or was the trail much wider than what I'm accustomed to running?

Mass start with a short parade loop to get everyone thinned out. It's not hard to pass in singletrack. However, yesterday's race was rainy so the singletrack was closed. We ran on horsetrails which are a lot wider.

Did a 5k last weekend in 27:11. Thought I would be faster but I guess it's the biggest race of the year so there was a crowd to fight through and it has some really bad hills. Those hills and the temp kicked my rear. At least I know what to work on

Official time from Saturday is 31:25 and 8th place in men's division. It was a little longer than 5k and two long, steep hills. Still sore from it. Gives me optimism for flat summer races, though. 10k winner came in at 35 minutes. 😵

These temperatures make running rough, I am taking it easy for the next 4-6 weeks and then I am going to start training for my first marathon. Haven't picked the race yet though.

I was going to do St. Jude's in Memphis, but after traveling to Cincinnati for the Flying Pig (which is a race that I highly recommend), I don't want to have to travel far for another race this year. I will be looking for something that is local-ish.

Myrtle Beach might be an option for you. It was my first and is a flat, semi-scenic course. Conditions were great with temp ~50 at start.

Ran a sweaty 26:09 5k this morning. It's the first of 3 in a summer series. Not running as much anymore but doing it to hold myself accountable for my fitness

Also got a go Vols from another runner this morning around 2.5 miles in. Made me smile even though I was struggling

5k in 31:23 this morning. 90 seconds slower than my best time, but that was in 30 degree colder weather. I would have done better, but I walked for about 20 seconds to get a drink of water at the mid-way point.
