The shut down thread

I think border security did matter to many of us and that's why it became a campaign promise for the guy who won. And as Obama pointed out, elections have consequences.
I think border security mattered to almost everyone. That's why Trump's total disregard for unity is so glaring. He single handedly turned the wall into a divisive symbol that will always have negative connotations both here and abroad. His desire to inflame his base and the classless way in which he went about it, came at the expense of the support he could have easily garnered from the people who may have otherwise supported some type of barrier.

Depends on where you put it. A 100 mile wall across big parts of the American west wouldn't have the same effect as across I-75 or I-24 etc. Also the interstate system and many other things were built in stages over long periods of time. Putting up decent barriers in strategic locations becomes a force multiplier for the border patrol.
Agreed. It allows more resources in other areas.

This isn't about $5.7 billion allocated for a barrier at the southern border. We added $1.3 trillion of new debt in 2018 and we routinely waste more than that on all sorts of things... it's about obtaining a symbolic victory at this point on both sides. It's just petty politics... everyone knows that $5.7 billion only adds between 130 to 150 miles of this proposed barrier anyway. In the big scheme of things, that is nothing. This is so ridiculous.
100% correct. It's a game of chicken over a wedge issue.

I think most private employer people have little or no sympathy for government employees that aren't drawing a paycheck right now especially since the government has promised them back wages. So a lot of them have been sitting on their hands for a month drawing a future paycheck.
Find that kind of deal in the real world.
Ive been playing a lot of xbox, golfing, went to Disney World, golfing, etc... :)

If you are getting a Government Pay Check and you don't have enough money in a savings/checking account or just stashed away at home in case of emergency that could get you through for a while then that's on you not the shutdown.

Also I would say a lot of these people live in pretty nice high end homes with great kitchens etc.. If you don't have some food in your fridge/freezer and cabinets/pantry then again that's on you.
You'd be surprised how a six figure salary doesn't take out the trashy/ghetto in some people and they squander everything.

They were seen waiting on a bus outside a House Office Building on Capitol Hill on Thursday afternoon when White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted the president's letter

'Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over.

You're GROUNDED, Nancy! Trump hits back at Pelosi's State of the Union snub by canceling top-secret congressional trip to visit troops in Afghanistan as bus with Bewildered lawmakers is turned round on way to the airport

My young, hot Russian girl friend, in her very best Russian accent said, "Thank you, President Trump."

That bus certainly doesn’t look like any of ours. Lol

The moment Trump espoused support for a wall, it wasn't going to be supported by any Democrat. Donald is employing some of the same rhetoric about border security that was used by both parties in the 90s and even into the 2000s. There is a deliberate conflation of immigration with illegal immigration in some (not all) of the critiques of Trump. In most (not all) of his more over the top statements, he pretty explicitly is talking about illegal immigration. His infamous "they're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists, and some I'm sure are good people" line was about illegal immigrants. That isn't a line I would have said if I was running for president and trying to gin up support for my ideas, but it is nowhere near as outrageous as his detractors try to make it sound.

Trump is divisive, of course, but the reflexive "Trump is for it, so I'm against it" (or vice versa) attitude that we see now is unlike anything I've ever seen. Perhaps even surpassing Republicans' reflexive opposition to anything Obama opposed.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. They want the best in everything. Probably eating once or twice a day at a restaurant (and I'm not talking Micky D's or BK). Having a new car every other year with payments. etc.. etc..

Forza 7 and Forza Horizon 4.

My new living room is huge and now my 55" is inadequate. Hard to see the cars now. Saw an 82" today at Costco..

"Samsung's absurd 219-inch TV takes up an entire wall — thus its name, 'The Wall'

It's official: Your TV isn't as big as Samsung's television known as "The Wall." Unless you own a movie theater, perhaps?

This hulking 219-inch TV isn't just huge — it also sports a fancy display technology known as microLED, which Samsung says is at the heart of what it calls "the screen of the future."
So what's the big deal? Here's what we know.

Last year, Samsung showed off The Wall as a 146-inch TV. This year, that TV has expanded to 219 inches — and there's a good reason for that!
It's not just bluster, though that's certainly part of the equation; The Wall is a modular television, meaning it can be expanded and shrunk. It does this through a new screen technology that Samsung is showcasing at this year's CES: microLED.

As you can see above, the panels that make up the 219-inch TV aren't particularly large — it's the black square being held in a single hand.
To that end, the concept can be scaled to a variety of applications.
Samsung sees its Wall concept as an interactive screen that fits into your home. Rather than appearing as a massive black rectangle when turned off, the screen can be set to display pieces of art or even just to blend in by displaying textured material.

"The customizable UX allows users to create a Feature Wall when the screen is turned off by choosing a picture, painting or piece of framed art that best suits their tastes," a release from Samsung says. "Alternatively, a wide variety of premium wall materials, finishes, and other décor options are available."
Because the display has no bezels framing its edges, artwork (or other visuals displayed) blends in more seamlessly than it might on a normal TV."

Can we put one on the border and be done with this fiasco?
