The shut down thread

Back in the day, interns were given stupid crap jobs of stuff they couldn't screw up if they tried. Half of them screwed up anyways.
I'm really distressed that the FBI is being decimated by a lack of internship help. Maybe now they won't **** up as bad as they do with their "senior" people like Comey and his cronies.
Interns are still treated that way in engineering. Any moron that gives an intern something significant to do is just that a moron. It’s a chance to test drive them and see if there’s something there to work with an build on. And a chance for them to test drive you. If both parties like the results an offer of permanent employment follows. And it’s an informed offer.

I don’t really understand it either. They’ve missed two paychecks and they need the food bank and charity to survive? A local synagogue raised money to give gift cards to TSA agents here. We have people that sleep under bridges every night but we’re giving money to people who have a job?
The concept of working paycheck to paycheck means that you can't afford to miss two in a row and then still pay your mortgage/rent when it's due while also buying groceries. These people are poor anyway. They are swallowing their pride and trying to save money where they can... most likely because they are putting their financial obligations first - which is the responsible thing to do.

As for this last line? Does it matter that you have a job, if you aren't being paid?

They're poor? How are you defining poor? I'm betting if you have a full-time Federal job you don't fit the category of "poor".

Now that doesn't mean they aren't living paycheck to paycheck or that they aren't being impacted but calling them poor is just odd.

I meant that in relative terms to the people who are commenting on their circumstances (such as Wilbur Ross and Lara Trump) but it would depend on what their obligations are for sure... Many of them would probably be in the category of lower middle-class... Fwiw, I gross between $40k to $45k per year and that is where I would categorize myself. I know that if I missed two pay periods in a row that I would not be able to pay both my mortgage and my child support payment on time (and trust me when I say that my ex-wife would not be in the least bit understanding of that). My credit would go to hell and I might even be arrested.

Why would the system break? Everyone is still working even though they aren't getting paid. If someone of them grow a pair and start calling out sick or quit THEN you'll see an issue..but its hard to walk away from that $150,000 a year job..
Plus a bottomless retirement that will never be under any threat. medical, etc etc etc....

I just don’t understand how you miss one or two paychecks and you’re in the breadline. But my guess is few of any have an emergency fund or anything squirreled away. But they’re probably on Facebook crying about it on an iPhone X. I have a cousin like this, her husband makes $100k and if he got laid off they’d be in my aunt’s house in a month. Every nickel that comes in goes right back out the door. Notes on everything, nothing invested or put back. The level of financial literacy in this country is really abhorrent. There’s a lesson in Junior Achievement where the kids have 30 things to pick from but can only select 20. The **** they pick over other things is amazing.

The first bad choice usually has to do with education and career track.

There is some truth to this.

So evidently Trump thinks grocery stores will "work along" with you, by which I think he means they'll give you food on credit to be repaid when the shutdown is over.

Billionaires giving advice to the average American on how to cope with being forced to go without being paid for a month is hilarious.... For God's sake, just shut up.

I mean I have this new thing called a “credit card” and they let me buy things with it and pay for them later. Could just be a local thing idk.

Working people just love paying interest on their food and extra interest on their house and car payment. Brilliant

I’ve had a credit card for 20 years and never paid interest. Even if you did incur interest you’re going to get a lump sum retro paycheck you can apply to the balance. I would pay a few bucks extra to eat and such.

Is that what Trump was talking about? He didn't mention anything about using previously established credit in that "advice" he was giving. Of course, the people who have available credit are going to max it out at a time like this... but then what?

Would you say the same about Oprah and most of the other Hollywood clowns that the Dims love? I happen to agree with you about the wealthy handing out advice to people trying to make ends meet. I especially dislike it coming from those who inherited wealth and the money for nothing crowd like "performers". Ever notice how many pro athletes, actors, and their brothers in arms wind up in dire straits despite having made millions?
