The shut down thread

Why would you care if he used funds already appropriated for national defense?

Seems obvious to be a political objection and not a rational / logical one.

First Trump said hundreds of times that Mexico would pay for it.

Then he shut down the government and proudly proclaims he is doing it to get Congress to fund it.

NOW he says all along its national security so he can do it himself and you slurpers just dutifully fall in line and go, "yeah, it's just using already appropriated money so he can do that."

Meanwhile, you screeched to high heaven whenever Obama did anything through EO.

Its just amazing to watch the temper tantrum, mentally ill President and his little army of toadies twist and turn and bend logic like this to justify his rantings.

I think he’s going to get around it. End the shut down and use already “allocated funds” from the DOD to do it. Now it won’t be completed before he is done in office. So the next question would be if he isn’t re-elected does it get killed.

This has been going on forever.
This thing/wall will never get finished

Honestly, has anyone on here remotely been affected by the shutdown?

I mean even in the slightest?

I know I haven’t.
This is such a narrow-minded perspective. You're not impacted by it, so you project outward that nobody else must be either. I haven't been impacted by it, but I do have a good friend named Tom Elchenko (Google him, he's on linkedin) who works as an auditor and Senior Team Leader for the United States Office of Personnel Management. This is the agency that provides federal human resources policy, oversight and support, and tends to healthcare, insurance and retirement benefits for federal government employees. His wife had their first baby on November 16th and he will now be going without a paycheck for the foreseeable future.

It is absolutely ridiculous that a country that issued $1.3 trillion of new debt in 2018 is shutting portions of it's government down over $5.6 billion. Both sides are being petty and there is plenty of blame to go around... but I remember who it was on December 11th that said he owns this shutdown and that he would be "proud to shutdown the government". That was a very dumb thing to say and it was not good leadership. There are people experiencing real world consequences over this.

You didn't answer the question.

Migrants' Remittances to Mexico, Central America Jump to $53 Billion

Think if we could tax the money being sent out of the US by these migrants.

10% would be over $5 billion

You left out the most important part of the quote.

"proud to shut down the government for border security"

Context matters.

All Chuck and Nancy have to do is agree to fund the wall. Trump has been consistent on this.

No, he hasn't. He agreed to sign a bill without funding for the wall, until he was criticized by Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Fox and Friends. And for a leader to say that he is proud to shut down the government is just dumb in any context.

Trump never said Mexico was going to cut us a check genius, what he did say was that through the renegotiated nafta deal and or other means, ie remittences the wall would be funded, I can’t wait to see the look on your party’s face when he declares it a matter of national security, which it is and funds are derived from the defense budget. It’s merely a matter of time amigo!

My life has been so consumed by the trans/gender issues, obsessing over Ocasio-Cortez, reeling over the Tlaib F-bomb, shock and disgust over Wexton having the gall to fly a trans-gender flag, worry about the electoral college being eliminated, and terrified over the fact that a congresswoman used the Quran when taking office and another used a law book, that I've had no time left to be affected by the shutdown.

I watched the televised meeting in the Oval Office.

That is where the quote came from and that is exactly what I was talking about.

I haven't been impacted by the flu, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes either.
I have. I have had the flu a few times. My brother and mother died of cancer. My uncle died of heart disease, and my father-in-law is a diabetic, and is going blind, and has neuropathy. So, I have been impacted by all the above.

These are your party’s values, I’m glad to see you’re coming to terms with the idiocy of these newly elected one term wonders..

That's unfortunate. People that haven't been impacted should be sympathetic. But as we all know, some are more empathetic than others. Some seem to be concerned only with things that directly affect them personally. Selfish twits.

You're not going to like the new norm. Learn to cope with your discomfort.

That is so dumb. It has been debunked many times in many places...

First, the renegotiated NAFTA (what Trump calls the USMCA), is not in effect yet. It still needs Congressional approval... and good luck with that!

Second, the U.S. - Mexico trade has been duty free for more than a decade, and the renegotiated trade deal does not add new tariffs on goods coming from Mexico to the United States. Even if approved (once again, good luck!) it will not take effect until around 2020.

Third (and most importantly), there is no provision in the new agreement that would have money flow from the Mexican government to the U.S. government and have this money earmarked for the wall. So, in other words, there will still need to be Congressional approval for additional revenue to be designated for the wall (which is exactly where we are today! ... it's not gonna happen, Captain.)

Is Tom prevented from finding work in the private sector? I mean almost everyone has experienced employment disruptions and have to find other jobs. Tom's employer is broke af, btw.
