The problem with this is that Finn just isn't interesting and no one really cares about the character... plus he's incompetent. And Poe is basically the same way, he's a hothead pilot who ends up getting most of his people killed. We're supposed to really care about them? Or Rose, a random mechanic... no one cares.
Rey and Kylo though, definitely want to see how that goes. There's a reason why the Rey & Kylo scenes were the best parts of The Last Jedi.
Finn may not be interesting to you or even me for that matter. That hardly means no one cares about him.
And yes Poe came off like a hot headed douche who who had learned a hard lesson about leadership. That was kinda the point.
Heres the thing... Star Wars is bigger than the original trilogy now. It means different things to different people of different ages. Most of us grew up with only 3 movies for 20 years. That is the Pinnacle that all others are held to.
Sure there was the EU stuff for those that wanted to deep dive but in general most just looked toward the movies. Then there is the generation that grew up with 6 movies. And another the had 6 movies and a weekly cartoon series. Now there is a generation with 9 movies and 2 tv shows with no slow down in sight.
The net is much wider now.
For instance... about 2 years ago I introduced my kids (Now ages 6, 4, and 2) to the original trilogy which they loved. Then we watched the prequels and they were blown away by The Phantom Menace to the point that it is probably their second favorite movie after A New Hope. They arent bothered by Jar Jar. They relate to young Anakin and they LOVED the pod race. Honestly, watching the prequels through their eyes made me appreciate them for what they were... Star Wars for a new generation.
Then we watched the Clone Wars and Asokah Tano, who was completely annoying to me at first, quickly became the 4 year olds favorite character. My eldest would rather watch the Rebels cartoon and likes Ezra Bridger over any of the movie characters. The youngest likes all droids but R2D2 is his favorite right now even over the trendy BB-8.
I guess the point is you have to accept that Star Wars is not just for us 40-50 year olds any more. It probably isnt going to be what you think it should be. And if you dont like the direction its going that does not mean everyone else doesnt or shouldnt like it either.
Ive posted this a couple times already but Ill wrap up this diatribe with it again
Its just a movie and if you go in expecting it to recapture your childhood you will probably be disappointed - Mark Hamill
