The Star Wars 8 SPOILER thread.

The problem with this is that Finn just isn't interesting and no one really cares about the character... plus he's incompetent. And Poe is basically the same way, he's a hothead pilot who ends up getting most of his people killed. We're supposed to really care about them? Or Rose, a random mechanic... no one cares.

Rey and Kylo though, definitely want to see how that goes. There's a reason why the Rey & Kylo scenes were the best parts of The Last Jedi.

Finn may not be interesting to you or even me for that matter. That hardly means no one cares about him.

And yes Poe came off like a hot headed douche who who had learned a hard lesson about leadership. That was kinda the point.

Here’s the thing... Star Wars is bigger than the original trilogy now. It means different things to different people of different ages. Most of us grew up with only 3 movies for 20 years. That is the Pinnacle that all others are held to.

Sure there was the EU stuff for those that wanted to deep dive but in general most just looked toward the movies. Then there is the generation that grew up with 6 movies. And another the had 6 movies and a weekly cartoon series. Now there is a generation with 9 movies and 2 tv shows with no slow down in sight.

The net is much wider now.

For instance... about 2 years ago I introduced my kids (Now ages 6, 4, and 2) to the original trilogy which they loved. Then we watched the prequels and they were blown away by The Phantom Menace to the point that it is probably their second favorite movie after A New Hope. They aren’t bothered by Jar Jar. They relate to young Anakin and they LOVED the pod race. Honestly, watching the prequels through their eyes made me appreciate them for what they were... Star Wars for a new generation.

Then we watched the Clone Wars and Asokah Tano, who was completely annoying to me at first, quickly became the 4 year old’s favorite character. My eldest would rather watch the Rebels cartoon and likes Ezra Bridger over any of the movie characters. The youngest likes all droids but R2D2 is his favorite right now even over the trendy BB-8.

I guess the point is you have to accept that Star Wars is not just for us 40-50 year olds any more. It probably isn’t going to be what you think it should be. And if you don’t like the direction it’s going that does not mean everyone else doesn’t or shouldn’t like it either.

Ive posted this a couple times already but I’ll wrap up this diatribe with it again

Well, the pod race WAS pretty awesome. As was the Darth Maul fight scene.

Plus the music... even Episode I had some redeeming qualities.

It's not about recapturing childhood, it's about making an effort to produce a decent product. I don't see anyone complaining about lost childhood except you, so you will probably have to keep repeating yourself.

I have this feeling Rian Johnson and George Lucas sat down to watch the prequels and after wards Rian said "Hold my beer"...

I could care less about lost childhood. It’s the poor story and campy writing that did this in. It’s just a bad film. Totally agree

Not to pile on, and I'm sorry to sound disrespectful, considering Carrie Fisher has passed away. But my god, could they not have found some better Poligrip for her? The way she sounded, I thought she was going to spit her dentures down Laura Dern's dress.

I’m going to change gears...

R2D2 was not in this movie enough. That did bother me.

I loved the interaction with Luke though. Hamill’s reaction when he saw him was great!

DOEsnt change the fact this movie is horrid. Just that there are too many fan boys that can’t accept it. I’m sure if you polled people go coming out of 50 shades of grey they would give you a 90% approval

Come on BD, you know this isn't a fact and is indeed an opinion. I'm not a fanboy and it is absolutely reasonable that a person could have a good opinion of this movie and not be one.

So critics and general audiences seem to like it but bigdaddy on Volnation says it’s horrid so that is the right opinion.

A poll doesn’t prove anything. I think it’s a terrible film. Maybe not a fact but pretty damn close. Most people I’ve talked to agree. It’s just not a good movie

Wow, I guess since you are so right all the time it’s a great film! Whatever dude. I can show you polls and critics (and have) that day it’s terrible. Of the ten or so people I know personally that have seen it, all ten hated it. If the majority I t this thread. They don’t like it.

The polls and/or critics don't really affect my opinion of the movie. I thought it was pretty good and outside of super Leia and Snoke dropping like a *****, I didn't have an issue with anything.

I’ve never stated I’m always right about any opinion I have on this movie or anything is fact. I’ve mosttly just been countering the hate hyperbole with my own opinion.

As for anecdotal opinions. The one friend I saw it with wasn’t impressed but he wasn’t impressed with Force Awakens or Rogue One (initially anyway). For further reference of his taste he didn’t like Civil War and was pretty indifferent to Thor Ragnarok too (Some times I wonder why he even bothers watching these type of movies)

Other than him I’ve listened to a few Podcast reviews and they have skewed toward liking it. But yes this thread of about 10 regular posters has skewed toward dislike.

I don't think whatever the reaction is right now even matters that much; how it's viewed in 5-10 years will probably be how it's really remembered.

I can remember the initial reactions to TPM were pretty positive; then after about 6 months to a year later after more viewers and the hype died down, the reactions were more like "Ehhhh it was ok but not really great and parts suck.

Then I remember the initial reactions to AOTC were overwelmingly that it was WAY better than TPM. People raved about it having all the Jedi and Mace Windu's purple lightsaber, and all. And then after a while....nope...it's now considered the worst one.

If I had to bet, I think the new trilogy will end up where many here already have it: better than the prequels, worse than the originals.
