The Star Wars 8 SPOILER thread.

I don't think whatever the reaction is right now even matters that much; how it's viewed in 5-10 years will probably be how it's really remembered.

I can remember the initial reactions to TPM were pretty positive; then after about 6 months to a year later after more viewers and the hype died down, the reactions were more like "Ehhhh it was ok but not really great and parts suck.

Then I remember the initial reactions to AOTC were overwelmingly that it was WAY better than TPM. People raved about it having all the Jedi and Mace Windu's purple lightsaber, and all. And then after a while....nope...it's now considered the worst one.

If I had to bet, I think the new trilogy will end up where many here already have it: better than the prequels, worse than the originals.

I would agree.

The Force Awakens has already experienced some of the Phantom Menace come down. Not as extreme but shine has come off for sure.

FWIW A couple of the podcasts I listened too said they lest TLJ leaning toward dislike but went back for a second viewing and liked it a lot.

And not to be repetitive... again... there is a certain magic to original trilogy that isn’t ever going to be recaptured. The new movies will only be rated against each other.

The only people I know that have really liked TLJ are the same people that think every movie they see is awesome and one of the best of the year.

My 25 year old son and his wife, who are huge Star Wars nerds by the way, really liked this movie. They said it is "a lot to take in, but it is in a cool unexpected way".

My son and DiL were raised in the prequel first era obviously, so they have a different perspective point than I do, yet they still agree that the OT is best to this point..but..they do not compare the new trilogy to the OT. They compare it to the prequels.

They also do not feel like the older generation of SW fans have a monopoly on ownership. They kind of resent that argument. I think the differences in opinions between the two groups are fascinating, and I would say that the generation of youngsters growing up with this trilogy will have a vastly different perspective also.

I can't wait to see it so I can join in the pissin and moanin 😁

I'm going to see it again this weekend with 4 others who haven't seen it, and I'm guessing I'll leave with liking it more than I originally did.

Also this past weekend TNT showed the original 6 pretty much all weekend and I generally got to see them all, and my reaction to the originals were that they were still great but found myself nitpicking them a bit more than usual, and the prequels I wasn't as harsh on.

Ok, he actually picked up the dice and then they disappeared so that is just stupid. It’s not nitpicking. It’s the reality based in the movie’s environment. Also, if these dice as so special that like and Leia were connected to them emotionally the why have we never seen or heard about them? And why would Kylo even care? See, what Disney did is totally take a giant dump on the series by throwing this crap out there and giving it’s main character a piss poor departure. I hate all the new characters except for Rey. And wow, the Asian girl???? That was just lame.

I was watching A New Hope with my kids today and the very first time we see the inside of the MF cockpit guess what I spotted swinging above Chewy’s Head...

Same scenario for me.

People who say this about people who say they like the movie seem to be the type who just make up stuff to pretend to have a point.

I've posted lots of points on the movie, but it's true enough for me so far. I'll know more when I see my sister and her family this weekend. My nephew and my brother in law had a good debate about the good and bad of The Force Awakens a couple years ago. My brother in law wasn't nearly as impressed as my nephew.

I don't know if this has been mentioned already, but I went to watch it for the second time today. They gave us a very good, but subtle, hint that Luke was using a force projection when he faced off with Kylo Ren. It's all in the feet. When the old guy comes out of the bunker to look though his binoculars, he left a footprint and one of the soldiers tasted it and remarked "salt". Later, as Kylo and Luke are squaring off, they give a close up shot of Kylo "digging in" with his stance. He left a footprint. Moments later, they close in on Luke's stance. He digs in....no footprint.

I just thought that was neat.

Don't know if it'll be a key point in episode IX or not, but apparently Snoke had at least one other apprentice according to Star Wars Insider Magazine.

Honestly, I was quite disappointed. Nothing about the film makes me want to watch it again.

- the Force ghost thing was full of inconsistencies
- the Asian girl and codebreaker characters were completely lame
- the casino planet belonged in the prequels
- no idea what they are doing with Finn
- Kylo may be the least interesting and most unconvincing bad guy of all time
- OMG Leia flying through space...
- The Frozen coyotes save the day!
- The Madagascar PETA owls keep Chewie from eating. Yay Disney!

The Luke/Rey sequences were fair, at best, not nearly enough to redeem the weak story.

I guess the Rey+Kylo fight scene was decent, after a goofy end for Snoke.

Flame away if you liked it.

Honestly I had never noticed them and I think they were only in Episode IV

I just read they were only in the one scene in A New Hope and then disappear. I know they weren’t in TFA because I just watched it.

So seems like quite a stretch that they made them seem special.

I didn’t notice them again in ANH. They probably kept getting the way or got knocked down during filming.

I’m ok with assuming they were there the whole time though. I don’t think they were trying to make it out like it was the most special item in the universe to Han, Luke, and Leia. It was just a tangible reminder of time spent together in the cockpit of the Falcon.

It was small and served the story point. I’ll give credit for them finding that small detail from ANH and using it to connect the films.

Saw it again today; thought it was better the second time. I also watched TFA last night. I still say TFA is better, but TLJ was definitely better tha second time.

Finally saw it.

I’m with BurntOrange here, I really enjoyed it. You really have to be able to suspend disbelief and see the force as something that is ever-developing among movies.

I really thought Kylo was a much better character this time around.

Finn’s story was awful, which made its horrendously stupid conclusion appropriate. If not for his entire story, I think this movie would be received much better.

The audience clapped and cheered at the end in the theater, that tells me the majority still loved the movie.

I really really liked it. I thought the Rey/Luke/Kylo aspect of this movie was some of the best Star Wars of the series.

This is the spoiler free write up I gave to a couple of buddies who haven’t seen it yet.

“Ok let me lay it out a bit....

Just to warn you all, there are some parts that are really stupid. Like facepalm stupid. There’s a part where Finn and a girl go to a city that’s a casino and it seems like it’s straight out of the prequels. They should have cut the whole thing out. In fact, Finn’s entire story is bad. The girl with him is an Asian girl and she is an awful character. And the conclusion to their story is SO. EFFING. STUPID. You’re going to be mad, so just be warned. Whoever co-signed on that whole thing should be fired.

The rest of the movie is terrific. The Luke/Rey/Kylo stuff is some of the best Star Wars there is. The backstory of Luke and Kylo is really interesting. And you find out who Rey’s parents are, and to me it’s perfect. Side note: I’ve always thought Rey is super cute and she’s way more attractive in this movie. And Kylo Ren’s character is SO much better in this one.

I will say the space stuff is hit and miss. A lot of it is just the first order chasing the resistance, and it goes stale for a while. Like the camera keeps coming back to it and it’s still just a slow chase through space, but it ends well (except for Finn and the Asian girl, which again is SO. EFFING. STUPID.)

Luke is done very well. Like he’s basically a broken man, and plays it well.

It’s a really good movie. I loved it. If not for some of the facepalm stuff it would make a run for the best. I would put it around maybe the 3rd or 4th best. I think Rogue One hurts it because Rogue One set the bar really high and came out less than a year ago, but I loved this one.”

The 4 people I saw it with today are all Star Wars fans; not rabid ones but they've seen every movie. They all really liked it, and 2 of them had heard it was bad from people they knew that had seen it.

It's starting to seem like the ones that don't like it are a very vocal minority.

A buddy of mine that owns a comic shop (nerd cred) called me yesterday and the first thing he said when I answered was “Man there was nothin’ wrong with that movie. It was good.” He went on to say it felt like a Star Wars movie and he put it around the same spot I have it, between RO and TFA.
