The Thread Where People Argue About Kneeling in the NFL (merged)

The players are going to have to ask themselves if it's worth their effort. Do they believe kneeling at the anthem will bring about some meaningful change? Or will it just drive more fans away from the NFL?

Not sure how kneeling at the anthem is going to make police act a certain way towards black people. If the purpose was to cause a discussion, well that's happened. The whole US is talking about it. What would cause them to stop kneeling?

That's what players need to be asking themselves if they want to continue. How long do they want this to go on and are they willing to accept this unanticipated strong negative reaction from the fans escalating?

The entertainment industry is great until you piss off the people that pay to watch you perform.

The players really don't have to do any of that because the current players, or most of them, this doesn't effect their bottom line. They (most of them) will be long gone from the league by the time the comes down the line financially. What it could effect is pensions, but I am not sure on the details of how that would be impacted, chances are that is what they are risking.

This is all on the owners, Jerry Jones has a multi-billion dollar asset to protect.

The groups opposed to the players are anything but "unanticipated" haha

The hopeful effect would be much more indirect than that, IMO. Increasingly, middle America is becoming more aware that there are major issues with the CJS. These protests are the type of thing that gets more people talking about how overzealous our system is. The WoD's days are numbered. People are becoming increasingly aware that our criminal punishments are often way too harsh.

I didn't say that. It's mostly white conservatives who don't understand how often "You can protest, but not like this" has been used in harmful ways throughout our history.

They can "protest" all they want, your strawman isn't working right. The real protest, which involves people of all races is actually working - so they completely understand how this works.

Gerald McCoy of Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Uproar if players forced to stand

"I don't think guys are gonna like it," McCoy said, when asked about the possible reaction from players. "I think it's gonna be an uproar if that is to happen because you're basically taking away a constitutional right to freedom of speech. If guys wanna have a, I guess you would call it a peaceful protest, I don't think it's right to take that away."

:eek:lol:

Its amazing these guys even made it to High School.

That's an extremely common opinion across the general public. 80% of the country would fail a middle school civics class.

You would think a few of the other players would help out the slower ones out. :) This 300lbs. mental midget couldn't figure his way out of a paper bag.

Why is anyone shocked that young men who skated through high school and two or three years of college aren’t particularly educated?

More importantly why does a large portion of our society assign entirely too much weight to their uninformed opinions?

You would think they would be protesting the schools they attended - that's the real crime.

Two plus weeks later and no end in sight to the crap-fest, this truly will be the gift that never quits giving.

I think the human mind is predisposed to believing that if someone is popular, well-known, on television, etc., their opinion must be "correct" or more enlightening than the average opinion.

Of course, there is no correlation between the fame of a person and the quality of their opinion, especially when celebrities opine about a subject they have no experience or expertise in (as they often do). They just have a loud megaphone, so the stuff they shout through it carries undue weight.

Agree completely. It’s actually kinda sad when I see people change stances on something because some celebrity said something.

"Nobody cares what celebrities say. Why can't they just shut up?" - people that voted for a politically outspoken celebrity in 2016
I don't care what celebrities say. I don't care what Trump says, and I did vote for him. I care about what people actually do. I believe that the players have a right to take a knee, take a crap, wave a Confederate flag, or whatever during the national anthem.

I also think that anyone in this country has a right to make an ass of himself, but he has to be willing to suffer the consequences. I am fully supportive of fans turning the tv station, if they don't want to watch it. I am supportive of the business owner having the right to fine, suspend, fire, or whatever any employee who is embarrassing his business, not following the rules, or costing him money.

So, in closing......players..... do whatever floats your boat. Fans, tune out if you wish. Owners, kick the offending players to the curb if you wish. Who gives a rat's ass?

All is great. I took a break for a few weeks after being berated by another poster for a joke. I didn't feel like f****** with the whole thing for a while. I still don't really, so I probably won't be around as much. It ceases to be fun when some people can't take an obvious joke that was in no way mean spirited. Thanks for the welcome.

Good to see you back 72....i for one appreciate your humor

With that said.... if the players want to sit or kneel during the anthem.... let 'em. The only reason the owners are coming out with the "must stand" stance is because its damage control.

Since I'm not an owner, I say take a knee and etc. and see how that works out in the long run. As ratings continue to decline as well as attendance.... **** them ..... let them do what they want.
