The Thread Where People Argue About Kneeling in the NFL (merged)

They should try attending a college or university, then.
Most I know who love pro sports more than college have been to college. And a lot of people I know who love college more than pro never went to college. Especially Bama fans. A good chunk of their most devoted fans probably hasn't even stepped foot on a college campus. All schools have those types of fans, but Bama has them in larger percentages.

One opinion from pro sports people I've heard that I don't agree with, but understand, is that they don't understand how you could be a fan of a college you didn't attend. They understand having what amounts to "school spirit" about that particular team, but don't understand how you could be a fan of a school you didn't attend, or follow the sport generally. They don't "get it," I know, but seems like a reasonable opinion.

Most of it just has to do with how you were brought up. I grew up being a Vol. I didn't even attend UT Knoxville (went to UT Chattanooga) but if I went to college on Mars I'd still be a Vol.

Now with regards to our sports figures and their causes. I live in Dallas. Jerry has been very clear about how he expects his players to conduct themselves.

Now you're getting somewhere with me.

Put it in the contract. If they want the millions to perform at our leisure, then they have to abide by the contract.

This was one of my least anticipated Super Bowls ever. I'm so tired of the Patriots and I usually enjoy rooting for the sake of the fans of the team who hasn't won in a while (like the Eagles last year), but the LA Rams fans are possibly the last fan base that deserve a title.
I didn't watch one second of the game, because the team that truly deserved to be there was at home in Louisiana. This game should have an asterisk. It was a total sham.

Between inept officiating that just gets worse every year and the ridiculous idea to "preview" all the commercials in their entirety online the week before the broadcast, what is there to watch for anyway?

I won't do your homework for you. Suffice to say, there are libraries full of research that cut the legs out from under your oversimplification.

But it is that simple and there’s no need to live 50+ years in the past in today’s day and age.

How much regular contact do you have with people in the subgroups you mentioned? I'm not asking to be accusatory, I'm genuinely curious.

Minorities? Let’s see. I grew up with a black first cousin. I have a SOL who is half El Salvadoran. We’ve adopted a bi racial child and hoping to adopt a black child we are currently fostering. I served in the military with people of all backgrounds. I work with people of all backgrounds. That said I see the real issues and it’s not racism. It’s people not taking responsibility for their actions and choices they make then placing blame on the social injustice bs. I see crime on the news and it’s rampant. I see the welfare issues. Guess what....it’s not just a race thing. Everyone isn’t born in perfect situations and everyone isn’t gonna be multimillionaires with an easy path in life. Make the best of what you have and don’t make stupid decisions and you can still be successful no matter what.

I wasn't meaning to focus solely on the minority side of things. I saw your initial post as only positioning minority discussions with crime rate; my apologies if you meant it to cover all three subgroups and I misunderstood.

I have zero tolerance for crime. We can both agree that it's a bad move. Desperation does crazy things to the brain but there's no reason for things to get that far. It's one of the things I've told my students when I was teaching and I tell the teens at church now: I can't help you with your needs if you're behind bars. Ask me or the church for help before you do something stupid. I just hope it gets through to them.

I have seen enough ****** sperm donors to believe that fatherless homes are a problem. In some cases, things improve when the sperm donor gets the heck out. The problem is not enough affection and attention for the children. It was a rude awakening to us when we moved down here and started getting involved with the families in our church. In one case, a grandmother kindly asked us not to hold her grandkids so much; she didn't want them getting used to it because they'd want it but wouldn't get it at home. WTF? Every kid deserves to be held, especially one and two year olds who are having a rough morning! Turns out, the great-grandmother they were living with was on disability and couldn't pick them up, and their grandmother (who also lived there) worked two jobs to put food on the table for everyone so they rarely saw her. Mom? She's in jail for murder (ran over a guy with her car after he came at her with a knife.)

Granted, that's one messed up family that is definitely an outlier on the screwed-up-o-meter, but their story does highlight the emotional side of things. Kids need attention and affection, not to be raised by Aunt Hulu and Uncle Fortnight.

I'm getting long in the tooth, but I think you'll also find statistical significance looking at research combining generational welfare with mental illness. There's a reason Ben Carson is a major success story - he's the outlier when it comes to making it out. His story wouldn't be nearly as inspirational if there were many more duplicating what he's done.

Yes I posted a meme, I'm so worried about them. I'm here calling them out for what they are, idiots.

It's been 1998 since I went to the movies, and been 2000 since I've bought a music cd.
Meme game is weak. So you came to post and have discussion about irrelevant idiots? And care enough to know what their political opinions are? Ok

Congratulations? What’s your point lol

It's yet another interesting social phenomenon. It's issues-based hypersensitivity, but the right refuses to acknowledge it as such because it would mean accepting similarities with traits they commonly mock in the left.
Yes, God forbid you support the FIRST RESPONDERS or the freedoms allowed by our Constitution. Those dirty right wing taxpayers. I'm going to wash my pig socks off right now........then ****ing burn them.

Riggins was a bit before my time, but that highlight of him running through and over guys will live forever.

My first real Super Bowl memory was Timmy Smith coming out of nowhere and beating the Broncos with Williams and Gary Clark, and Art Monk. I still have some of their Starting Lineup plastic figures.
I grew up,pulling for Bart Starr and the Packers, Johnny U against the Jets (I hate the ****ing Jets to this day)......

Statistically impossible for their to be more NFL fans than NCAA fans.

What difference does it make? Keep your disrespect off the field and in your private life. Establish foundations and charities that will do some good. Be a representative for the league and its opportunities off the field where it will do some good. All the kneelers were doing is alienating a portion of the population that they need in their court.

We haven't watched an NFL game for the past two seasons. We don't miss it at all. Fact is, it freed up a huge amount of time that we now use for family activity. Eye-opening change in how we live.

Just got tired of all the drama, bad officiating, injection of politics into what was supposed to be "entertainment", etc. Worst part of it was getting out of FF. But we don't miss it a bit, and it's doubtful we'll ever go back to watching again.

We still watch UT and UGA games. For now. But if they end up going down the same road the NFL did, I can see us freeing up our Saturdays as well. We watch football for entertainment, not to be told what to think, or do.
