The Weightlifters Thread

Knox classic this coming weekend. Can't wait till I get to eat real food. Looks like I will be in the middle weight class.

Share some pics of the competition, please. Good luck. I'm a big fan of the sport. Though I'm in great shape, the way I'm built would never allow me to be competitive. Jealous.

BTW, anybody know where I can find a list of past Mr. Knoxville champions? As a kid I cleaned a gym for a guy who was Mr. Knoxville. I'd like to look him up. He passed away about 10 years ago. He was using insulin for bodybuilding purposes, and it sent him into cardiac arrest.

Thanks man. I'm looking forward to it. I know the knoxclassic.com website has some pics, but I don't think they show any that far back.

LOL, I feel for him. Not sure if he has the same issue as me, but my hands are huge so smaller bottle caps can be tricky. I'll lose skin before I can get the lid off in some cases. Twist top beers are the worst. One of the many reasons I choose craft beers.

5th place in the Open Class, 4th place in the Knox Class. I had a great time and meet some great people. Everyone who competed brought their A game. It was a tough competition. Definitely a special evening.

Nice detail in your back man. Congrats on the result.

Thanks brah. I'm just ready to get better. It was definitely a learning experience. I gained a lot of respect for what these guys, who do it all the time, do. It was rough. Now that I have a good idea and understanding of what it takes...hopefully I can do this more often. I just need to get bigger and cut to a weight that I am comfortable with. I decided too late that I was going to it. I was already cut, but I decided to see if I could cut down even more. I lost mass in my lower body. I just flattened out too much that last week with carb depletion, and the water diet. I started at 190lbs and got as low as 168lbs.

Yeah, from what I hear the diet takes time to master. A good fraction of winning is determined by how well you time your cut.

Serious question... What's the tanning bed obsession with body builders?

Spray tan. Unfortunately you are actually graded on your tan. The darker the better. It allows the judges the opportunity to see the definition better, than what would show up on a pale person like myself. It was actually the worst part of the whole process. Standing in a room with ten naked dudes. Then go home to sleep in sweat pants and a hoodie. You have to let it dry over night...so no shower. You smell like the ass of a Viking the next day. It washes of, but you better clean your tub right after. Also lay paper, or towels down on your toilet seat if you have to poo in the middle of the night. It will stain your toilet seat, and is very hard to get off.

Arnold talked about how hotel staff hated when they were hosting an event. Everything from sheets to furniture would be ruined. They were a lot more moderate about the tanning 40 years ago, too.

How high do you let your body fat get before you start cutting for a show?

Honestly I'm not sure what it was around the time that I started this past go around. Like I said I was too late in the game before deciding that I was going to do it. If I had to guess I was probably around 15% at the time that I started. I believe I might let myself get up to around 20% the next time. I've heard that is about average for most.

It was awful man. Friday just sucked all around. Saturday was awesome. Hanging out with everyone back stage was just a blessing all around. I can't express how awesome most the dudes were. They taught me a lot, and were very helpful. If any of you all decide to ever start doing it...I say go for. Be yourself and definitely ask questions, but don't be pushy. You can tell the ones that have been doing it for a while, and just remember they're in the same boat as you are. They love to lift, and have things down to a science just like you might be. Just be cool. Congratulate other winners, and especially dudes that finish above you. Be a man and admit that they just worked harder than you did, and let them know that. Once you go through that kind of grind you will definitely respect them more. I've always been a good people person and know how to lighten the mood a little bit when people seem on edge. Also, stay away from the women that compete. They might kill you if you say anything to them. Bodybuilders, bikini girls, physic girls, any of them.

Thanks! I've wondered. Had no idea tans are part of the grade.

Even some of the African American competitors get them. I met one dude from Atlanta. We got to talking, and the subject of spray tan came up. He said he had to start doing it to keep up with some of the extremes that white people or going.
