You know what's kind of racist? Back when Chris Loften was an All American and most of the local sports radio calls were about some white guy on the team who averaged 2 points a game.

Trust me, Knoxville needs all the diversity it can get.

First off you misspelled Lofton. With an o, not an e. Second, Chris Lofton was by far the most spoken of player on UTs team no matter where you were in the state. Anywho, you do know that Gillespie is a black man, right? Very qualified, very well thought of, I'm personally stoked he's on the staff. If he had been another balding white guy, as you like to say, with his exact same credentials, I'd have been just as stoked. Finally, stop with the "you're all a bunch of racists in Knoxville/The South", its played already. Why don't you go focus on a nice northern city and their racism... say Boston, perhaps the most racist city in the country.

um, because I live in Knoxville? And there were far more calls about Dane Bradshaw's performance/playing time in 2007 than there calls about anything to do with Lofton (Heck, wasn't Bradshaw named one of the top 20 UT basketball players all time? A guy who averaged 4.8 points per game? But, I'm sure race had nothing to do with that).

That said, I don't really believe Knoxville is overtly racist. It's just very very white. It's certainly the whitest place I've ever lived. And given that most football players are black and this town is so white, a diverse coaching staff can only be a good thing.

I don't like Crush's word choice referring to Whites as stupid rednecks. But let me state something about the chart showing gang associations. These charts aren't accurate when it comes to Whites in gangs. That's because certain ones like KKK, Skinheads, Aryan Nation, and others maintain a lower profile and instruct members to not respond to such surveys or deny membership. They tend to be more sneaky in their criminal acts and maintain enclaves, mainly in Idaho, Oregon, and Montana, and Wyoming. But they also have them down South too. Their memberships include people not normally associated with gangs. University professors, cops, preachers, doctors, and other "law abiding" citizens. They're gang bangers fixated on racial hatred but it seems no one has the guts to stand up and say so.

:e.

For the sake of fairness, if we are going to count hate groups as gangs, you have to include the millions of black men in the Nation of Islam, the new black panther party, and that Isaerlite church of god and of Jesus(the black guys who claim to be Jews).

Its not racist. Its true. Most people are more comfortable with people from the same race and socioeconomic background.

this hits it on the head.

i could give a damn about diversity for diversity sake.

you need coaches that can go into the neighborhoods and living rooms where a lot of these young black athletes come from.

I wouldn't go in there with your's.

I'm not sure what it reminds me of but I'm confused how we went from discussing hiring a black coach to discussing how many blacks are in prison.

It's an ugly thing but VN allows this stupidity.

"You made me fell all right."
Temptations

This may be sad to say, but I miss the Sixties when White buds and Black buds got together and swapped the latest righteous music. The world said don't, but we both had it going on. It was a spiritual thing. Say something bad; I don't care. I'm glad I was there.

Actually, no. If that was a reference to Animal house, I totally missed it. I did see that movie at Pearl Harbor though.
John Belushi gets up at the frat house and gives an emotional, rousing speech, and he spoke about not giving up. He said something like....."Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" One of the frat brothers says to another...."Germans? I thought it was the Japs." The other frat brother says...."Don't stop him. He's on a roll." It's a common joke from years ago. I feel sure that it's on youtube.

Alright, I read through every post on this thread. Here is what I think.
I am an almost 50 year old white guy. I grew up down south in a home with a father who didn't like blacks. It is hard for some of that not to rub off. However, if I keep that attitude without trying change it, that is on me. He grew up in segregated schools, I did not. I have gone to school with blacks, worked with blacks, gone to church with blacks. Here is what I have figured out. Some people are jerks. Some aren't. This isn't peculiar to color. I know people that same color as me that aren't worth pissing on if they were on fire. Some different color aren't worth pissing on if they were on fire. Heck, some of them are close relations of mine. That is just the way it is. Most people are more comfortable with their own color; some don't care. I am trying to raise my kids to not care. They are going to be better off in this area than I am. That is what we should all be trying to do. I had a good friend in a different city we lived in. He was what my kids call a "brown dude". I used to tease him about being my twin and we laughed about it. We often talked about how our kids didn't really worry about what color the other was. What I am saying is, we should all try to put our prejudices behind us and leave our kids with a better attitude than we had. Easy to say and hard to do. I believe that some kids won't care what color the coach is that is recruiting them. Some white kids won't like being recruited by a black coach. Some black kids won't like being recruited by a white coach. That is just the way it is. Is it right? No. We should all try to make it better however we can. I am not a big proponent of the diversity movement. The idea is that you hire people of different races and genders and end up with the best people. I have always believed that if you hire the best people, you will end up with a diverse group.
Hope this comes across like I meant for it too. Like some others on here said already, I don't give a rip what color the coaches are. Let's get the best coaches and best recruiters and the results will come. Some day 100 years from now, maybe no one will care about what color the coaches are.

It could also have to do with:

Urban vs Suburban/Rural population...

Eductaion levels...

gang affiliation:

And possibly (lord, you guys are gonna' hate me), subculture glamorization:

Note and disclaimer: This is in no way making judgments about races/cultures. It is literally just posting additional statistical and media factors that effect crime associations.

:hi:

I understand where you going with that... But if the police is payed to watch me not you..

Who do you think will get arrested the most?
