The you don't want to get involved in this discussion thread (split)

Its pretty sad that something like this gains national attention im pretty sure the obamas will have him for dinner at the white house soon. I have nothing against homosexuals, your business is your business. But when there is actual good news to report such as the kid from Nova that gave up the majority of his senior baseball season to donate bone marrow to a 3 year old dying girl no one cares. I dont care if your gay but im not going to celebrate it as if it were the 2nd coming of christ

No worries. Religion and politics get people on edge..... Sooooo how do you vote? :)

rarely :)

hard for me to find a candidate worth voting for - I want to abolish the capital gains tax, abolish or nearly abolish income taxes, pro-gun, pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, end the drug war (too expensive, not b/c i do drugs), legalize virtually all drugs for consenting adults and get the tax revenue, remove almost all domestic spending by the feds, and I would cut the military at least in half

so not a lot of candidates that even remotely come close to me

I've not been in this thread since very, very early this morning, but I would like to say the following, then move on:

To all who have participated in this debate in a civil manner, thank you. I have attempted to be fair and civil as well. If, at any time, anyone interpreted my arguments/opinions as personal attacks or as assaults upon their religious/personal beliefs, please don't interpret my actions as attacks. I've always been of an inquisitive mind, and what some may consider offensive actions on my part are simply my way of interrogating the deep issues. I mean no disrespect. Thank you again for respecting my opinions. Good debate, and we'll see you the next time around!

:peace2:

My sentiments also. Somehow I was the first one in this "split", and I was simply saying IDGAF about someones sexual preference (within the law) and I dont want to see/hear about it constantly.

Extreme libertarian sounds like. Ha. You and Ron should run on a ticket. I am for some of those things you listed. But not others. I mean I am very very conservative. But not that crazy. Hahaha

I didn't know Swanson was a libertarian - should have guessed it by the screen name

Marcion of Sinope (circa 85-160), an early Christian Bishop and theologian, took that route and stripped out the OT and basically considered the OT God wicked/illegitimate and the theology of the OT as irreconcilable with the God of the NT and Jesus' teachings. Marcion was actually the first Christian to come up with a Christian Canon. He became extremely influential among the wealthy and powerful Roman's, particularly Roman soldiers (the fact that he was so popular among the military class gave him a lot of power but also made him a threat to others). Eventually, Marcion, like many others during this period, started to fall out of favor and made enemies of his fellow Bishops and was eventually declared a heretic and excommunicated.

However, Marcion's New Testament Canon was the major reason why a universal canon was put together. (there was no such thing as a bible or canon for several centuries which actually makes the borderline idolatry and worship of THE BOOK literalists engage in all the more quizzical since the very apostles who knew Jesus and were charged with spreading the gospel after the death and resurrection of Jesus certainly did not have a bible nor did they bind themselves or limit their beliefs and teachings so rigidly and would've laughed at the notion of literalism - a method of interpretation that doesn't come into existence until American slaveholders used literalism as a method of justifying slavery against the religious arguments of abolitionists). However, the powers that be wanted to streamline Christianity and shape it to fit their own beliefs and the idea of a canon served that purpose. Ironically, there's evidence that Marcion was the first and only major figure to start collecting the Pauline Epistles and no evidence that other early church father's had done so.

I had never heard of Marcion until today....Blew my mind. Probably paid way too steep a price, considering I had to read this whole damn thread, but its always good to learn something new. Thanks UTProf!

I am not pro-choice or pro-gay marriage but I do not think the government at the federal level should even be involved in those issues at all. War on drugs and war on poverty really have been nothing but a war on taxpayers.

A transition from religion to politics. You are welcome volnation.

Tomorrow? Lets see what's on the docket...?

Capitol Punishment, gun control, aaannnddd....Nickelback

you are right on that - only thing more impressive than how much they have grown is how little they have managed to solve

To the OP, you thread title is accurate. I may eat again sometime in the next year.

Pretty good move as far as job security. No team would want to endure the PR shyt storm that would occur if their gay player gets cut.

Although no one has said this specifically yet, I know it will come in the days ahead with this debate. For those of you who think homosexuality is simply explainable by being "a person's choice," then I'll give you a task: go and be gay for an extended period of time, particularly in a culture that labels you somehow "other" in doing so. Go. Just go and be gay. Have lots of gay relations. I mean it's just a choice, isn't it? You can be gay too. So go be gay.

Not that simple, is it?

It's very simple. I simply choose not to live like that.

You're certainly welcome. Early Christianity is fascinating -- many strains, movements, ideas and theologies existed all at once, some of which are even more mind-blowing.

Early Christians wouldn't recognize Christianity today nor would many of today's christian recognize early Christianity. However, it's important to understand that there has never been a "Christianity" in a singular since not back then and not even today -- it's far from a monolithic religion. Instead there are "Christianities" or varieties of Christianity with the larger groups claiming to have orthodoxy on there side and that's before getting into the various ways those groups start interpreting things even the inner splits.
