Tidbits on The Coaching Search and Pearl Leaving

Our basketball program fan base is in building mode. You bring in a name guy and he'll get a pass for a year or two. You bring in Marshall and he better be successful right away or the building fan base will start to drop off quickly.

this building fan base you mention really doesn't have a good idea of who's good or not

I'm not doubting the validity of your post, but where are there quotes from Pearl's peers on how they feel about him?

When you can't speak to someone, who would you then call? People who have association, right?

There are many people who don't think or speak very highly of Pearl that are more than happy to talk.

I like Dooley a lot and think he has a chance to do well. But we hired a guy from a Louisiana directional school as the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. We are clearly not a destination program or our candidate pool wouldn't have included Dooley to begin with.
Timing had nothing to do with that.

Sadly, most of the "building fan base" are going to hear NIT and know him as the coach that Lofton hit the shot against and immediately think he'll suck if he doesn't come to his introductory press conference in a white speedo with the remainder of his body coveraged in orange body paint.

You bring in a big name coach there will be plenty of excitement. I don't see a Marshall hire drawing a crowd at McGhee-Tyson for his arrival.

that's great and all but it doesn't translate to wins. I want a guy who can take over a down program and win games not a press conf

I agree about Pearl, but those other guys aren't starving. I thought they were getting their salaries for the rest of the current fiscal year, plus one more full year. They'll be doing a lot better while unemployed than most people.

Wrong. Paid through July 2011.

They don't know the difference between Jamie Dixon and Jamie Kennedy and couldn't discern between Jay Wright and Jay Mohr.

Most people are followers. You bring in a coach that brings the hype - plenty of people will buy in. You think Marshall will come in with any fanfare?

At least the casual March Madness fan would have heard of Dixon and Wright the last few years. Maybe even seen the commercials with Wright.

The casual UT fan will remember Loften's shot to beat a #15 seed that some joker coached up to come within seconds of beating Pearl. Just explain who that joker is.

Playing to the imbeciles and knownothings you're describing is how Doug Dickless arrived at the brilliant decision to choose Jerry Green over Bill Self.

that was way before i started following basketball and if this is true, which im sure it is, this really makes me want to

Sounds like a joker being propped up with a moral victory to me - he lost the game, right?

I guess that's why Georgia Tech is sending people to watch Wichita play in the Garden and try and jump ahead of Tennessee in line for Marshall.

Great point on Anderson to Arkansas. I'm sure his personal and professional history had nothing to do with him taking that job. Arkansas obviously did the greatest sales job since Tennessee amazingly convinced Johnny Majors to return to Knoxville.

Yesterday you used GA techs hiring habits as a reason we don't want to be like them. Pick one.

Out of our realistic candidates marshall would be top 2 of my list.
