'20 TN ATH Reggie Grimes (Oklahoma commit)

Top teams are passing. Likely ends up at Vandy type school. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.
I assumed the same. Didn’t know if any teams have come out here or if we have to wait until after bowl season.

This is the recruiting version of guy at NFL draft sitting alone in the green room on Day 2.

Sounds like a case of him not really wanting to play football. Let me start off by saying that I know nothing about his situation.

My guess is that his father being a former player made him feel pressure to play ball. He probably doesn't want to disappoint his dad/family and all the other people who think it's a no-brainer due to his elite measurables. Probably does enjoy the attention he gets from it and the friendships with teammates.

He probably also realizes that it would be stupid to turn down a free education but he doesn't love the game enough to put in the work and is just going through the motions.

Football is not a game you can excel at if your heart isn't in it. Lots of conjecture in this post but I don't think I'm too far off. Hope this kid finds something he loves doing and is successful.

No you're spot I believe.
Its pretty evident if you look at his film.

Kongbo showed some flashes after receiving some coaching from this staff, but then he got hurt. Makes you wonder what he could have done if coached properly from the beginning.

Wonder if Grimes would respond to coaching? Also wonder if he could flourish as a TE?
I would love to have seen Kongbo under this staff for his entire career. Butch ping ponged his weight and position too much. Probably why the kid ended up hurt his last year. He had a ton of potential. Hopefully Roman Harrison ends up being a positive example.

Still don’t see how his enjoyment is being curtailed by a message board. Price of being highly rated on his way to a free education and whatever’s beyond that depending on what he does with his athletic talent.
Ah, so there is a price to be paid. Some say plays like Jane or Janes' sister, others describing his relationship with his father, coach, teammates like they shared the same dinner table. If all the smack talk about a high school student make VN posters feel more adult and extra knowledgeable ...well have at it.

I’ve opined that he hasn’t played to his ranking and that the staff not targeting him isn’t malpractice. Don’t know any other stories about him. Most of the comments I’ve read on him is how he disappears in games and the stats would back that up imo. The other personal stuff you describe, really hasn’t caught my notice...so it’s definitely not the majority. I brought up the word “price” but he really doesn’t seem to have paid much of one. If he blows up at the next level, the naysaying may come up in articles and background stories or if he never really plays up to his promise, nothing will prevent him from living a normal life.

If he 100% wanted to sign AND they 100% wanted him to sign, why wouldn't he go ahead and do it? Why wait?

Both sides are locked in, the only issue here is the prospect of the coach leaving for an NFL job. So Grimes elected to wait and see and then sign in Feb.

Look I don't know where your info comes from but the kid loves the game and will be fine. Dad doesn't force a thing or none of the other jibberish that you typed. We had a similar situation in which everyone backed off of Josh Smith and he went to Vandy and was all SEC for them at MLB. He also went on and gas been in NFL rosters. Trust me all will work out for the kid. If you hv any true questions or concerns about him and dad we can connect you on twitter. Just drop your Twitter handle.

Thanks for the offer de1, this is the only social media I get on. I have no info and know nothing about his situation. I also wasn't trying to imply that his father is pressuring him....just that he might feel like he is expected to play because of who he is.

I really wish the best for him and I think a lot of us fans are trying to figure out why a lot of big programs are shying away from him. Most were hoping that his on field performance would match his star rating and measurables and that he would come to UT. For whatever reason, that hasn't seemed to happen and it's puzzling.

I hope that college coaching is the answer to him achieving what he is capable of.

@de1conley Thanks for bringing the insight to the board. I have been critical of Grimes’ play on here. After watching him play in 5 or so games I have found him to be a pretty frustrating kid to watch. I believe that comes from his size + stature and the high level athleticism he possesses. This combination should lead to a kid that dominates lower level HS competition but on the field it hasn’t translated to that.

That being said it has made me wonder is he playing out of position as a DE or rushing OLB? He displayed no pass rush moves outside of the bull rush, is not violent with his hands, doesn’t shed blocks and has zero backside pursuit. At RB (now this was from a small sampling) he tends to twinkle toe around with never planting his foot and accelerating forward into defenders. He looks like Hurd but runs like a kid scared of contact.

From what I have seen he does have the ability to push an O-Lineman back and disrupt a play. Could this translate into run blocking and him turn into an run blocking TE or OT?

Any insight into where OU or other teams are planning to utilize him?

Pure speculation on my part but swampfox was hardcore on the Pruitt criticism early on. That spilled over to this kid by way of mocking people that implied we were gonna pass on Grimes.

He dug in deep that Pruitt whiffed and we were all making excuses for his poor recruiting.
That might play into it, tho I know sff says otherwise. Just a random thought.

I’d still take him and be happy. Worth a shot with how this staff can coach them up. Doubt we even make a run though after signing Morven and Tyler.

Thats a reach, Critical of Pruitt before, yes and I stand by what I have said. As far as whiffing, never said that I did question anyones knowledge of Pruitt or the coaching staffs inner thoughts. I still think Tennessee missed on some very good in state talent in 2018

Getting less traumatic every game played. I don’t think Knox or Anderson see the field this past season.

Meh, I didn't swear to anything but not that much of a reach either.
"Questioning their knowledge" is kind of understatement, tho.

You came in hot, mocked/insulted everyone because you didn't understand how easy it was to tell if someone was be recruited hard or not.

Oh, and of course went back to the FF and made it out as you being attacked in the RF for no reason. No big deal, that's become par for the course at this point.
