'26 TN ATH Shavar Young (Clemson Commit)

That's been covered a lot ....

Regardless of which school is chosen, it is strange for a prospect to be publicly expressing anger/bitterness/ridicule towards people who are offering them a scholarship, money and taking an interest in helping them achieve their future career goals.

There have been times when athletes have done this while choosing Tennessee (I remember Vincent Yarbrough in basketball from way back in the day .... announcing for Tennessee over Kentucky). It makes me cringe, regardless of whether they are picking Tennessee or someone else.

It's not a big deal; nor is it a poor reflection of anyone's character or upbringing, but it is a strange way to act towards people who have taken the time to recruit you.
Spot on!

You don’t pull that stunt, as many times as he’s visited and being a local kid, unless you’re upset about something.

Dollars to donuts this kid wanted in at some point but the staff wasn’t ready to take the commitment, OR he wanted to play a position but we liked him better at another (wr vs cb or vice versa).

You put on a show like that while committing and it means you’re scorned about something.

The last two kids who did that - both linebackers from Georgia - one was pizsed because Pruitt cussed him out when he told him he was going to commit to Georgia, and then he other (Jaimie Pettway) wanted in the boat but we weren’t ready to accept. Ended up at Mizzou.
Tennessee. The only state where it almost hurts to have a kid in state when you’re recruiting him. I’m sure it was some petty BS.

Kid is like 16 so I can’t be too upset with him for being immature. I guess best thing is to wish him the best at Clemson in whatever the hell conference they finally end up in.

Honestly I won’t say upbringing but I would be pissed if my kid treated a staff like that when they were working to recruit him. I’ve said this in the past even about our own recruits. Bc even when a kid commits here when he pulls crap like that it’s a sign of serious immaturity. This kid is 16 so he’ll probably be fine but it’s a bad look to me.

Tennessee has lost out on a lot of local players over the years. One guy I thought handled it the right way was Vonn Bell from Chattanooga. He was a much higher rated prospect than Shavar Young.

There was no hat or shirt stunt when he picked Ohio State in 2013 .... He expressed gratitude to all of the staffs that recruited him and then explained why Ohio State was best for him. That makes so much more sense than the tired and lame fake out garbage.

Disrespecting people who took the time to recruit you is absolutely a poor reflection of character and upbringing.

Doesn't mean he will beat up kids or terrorize the community with his car. He isn't going to Georgia after all. But yeah, it's a sign of bad character. Of course it is.

Clemson was really lucky to get a decade of very good QB play from Boyd, Watson and Lawrence. Haven’t had it since and it’s made the difference.
Yep QBs and skill guys masked their lack of OL recruiting. When you’re not getting those guys you can’t afford to not have quality OL play

Primarily because of age, I think it's fair to just think of it as either not being well-thought out, or perhaps just being poor judgment. Sometimes teenagers have strange ideas of what will look funny or cool. They often don't consider other perspectives outside of their own.

In a lot of these instances, I would guess there’s negative recruiting going on behind the scenes. Us versus them, and whatever side the kid chooses, the other side gets vilified. The kid is the one who looks bad, but their actions were built on lies and hurt feelings. Always better to be respectful of others no matter what.

Eh. I've had competing job offers before which is analogous and still managed not to do this lol.

And I don't say that to condemn some kid by any means. It's 100% a kid being a kid and not a big deal.

But I was really just saying that 1. No, I do not find it cute when UT is on the other end of these silly stunts. 2. There's nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade. The reason I don't like it isn't some matter of personal preference or something. I think it reflects poorly on a kid who is receiving one of their first public platforms and uses it to do something disrespectful and silly.

I don't understand why people think it's cool to troll people. I just think it's silly. Not going to lose any sleep over it.

Lol what did Tennessee do to irk this kid? A coach rip one sitting on the couch next to his grandma or something?

😂 I try not to take it too personal. We’ve had a few that did worse but eventually ended up wearing orange and being great for us. Cade Mays anyone? Easy to forget these are teenage kids.

Would the same reaction happen on here if he had pulled a Clemson shirt off then picked Tennessee?
Yes for most people. Except people would be glad he picked Tennessee, obviously.

The fake out is cringe regardless of who they pick.

Idk if I would even say character. It was just immature. Kind of dumb imo too.

Tennessee has been the model for a lot of schools as far as NIL; also making steps in other areas as far as getting kids fair compensation. Clemson is a dinosaur in their thinking about player compensation and is about to be looking for another conference. I’m sure they get player compensation figured out eventually bc it’s already starting to affect their recruiting imo; I’m just not sure it helps their current players. Personally I wouldn’t want to burn (i dont necessarily think he did either) a bridge with an SEC power even if you didn’t go there this early in the game bc it’s hard to negotiate with you run away the teams with large NIL funds.

My more concise analysis is without knowledge of communications between him and staff I can’t calculate our revised risk/reward calculation as it relates to balancing athleticism and character/fit elements. Don’t see how it could be a positive if he wanted to open it back up. Both principals have a better idea.

His commitment antics are more of an indictment on the parents rather than the kid. All I’m gonna say, good luck to him.

Maybe his parents didn’t think that grown azz men would get their feelings hurt over how a kid decides to announce where he’ll play football so it wasn’t a big deal. Bc it’s not. At all.

Are you just a thug or what? You bring no interesting commentary or information but you've got something negative to say about every post that has to do with anything regarding honor, respect, or human decency.

I’m not a thug and I don’t find any of this commentary interesting nor informative. I’m really surprised Freak hasn’t shut it down already. Why do any of you guys care about his commitment video to a school other than UT? You all need to move on and return your discussions to UT recruits. JMO, TIFWIW, AARP.
