'24 TN WR Amari Jefferson (Tennessee)

Kids cross state lines. As he says, instate talent is an outdated concept. Society is far more transient now. Does proximity matter? Generally, yes. But it doesn’t matter if that kid is in the state or not, as long as he’s proximate. Tennessee has as good or better shot at Atlanta/Charlotte kids than Memphis kids because the former is closer, even though the latter is instate.

There is a TON of proximate talent for Tennessee to recruit from, instate or not.
It’s not changed that much although NIL has made a difference…. Phil followed the same pattern for success…. He got the close instate talent that he wanted…. Recruited strong within 5-6 hours…. Hand picked some guys that would listen from further away….. Ainge, Simon, and Clausen come to mind…

I don’t know why Memphis keeps getting mentioned…. Everyone realizes how far away it is and almost like it’s another state…. This convo is in a a kids thread that is 1.5 hours away from campus. We are also not really discussing kids that grew up in another state and moved here like Junior Colson.

The fact remains if you aren’t successful with kids you want that endure all the pressure from local people to play at the popular state school then you probably won’t be successful enough outside of the state to reach our goals of being champions.

There are several examples of this: Look at how Missouri struggles with instate talent…. We lose kids every year that get offered late by an instate school and they commit to them… Sylvester Smith is an example this past year…. I don’t think we should take instate kids just bc they are instate…. If we want them, however, we need to be very successful in getting them.

So you want kids that bow from pressure from mouth breathing in state fans?

Cool. Not me. I want kids from all the states that are grown ass men who want to forge their own legacy. That's the spirit of being a VOL.

You are putting that label on it. Struggling...why? Why even think that way. If we get a better player from Missouri than Alcoa, that's bad? Smh.
I never said any of that….. the staff picks out instate guys that they really want and goes hard after them… if we can’t be successful with them then we are going to have a difficult time away from the state…. I definitely have never advocated for taking lesser players inside state…. Just the ones Tennessee really wants.

Spirit of being Vol? LOL I just want to win.

Then just say that. Get the players they want. Getting them or not has nothing to do with getting out of state players.

Georgia population is larger than TN.

In '25, TN has 14 4 Stars. 6 of those are in Nash area, 2 Memphis, 2 Chatt, 1 in Alcoa.

That means rest of TN, Nash and Memphis just have three star players? You cant tell me that out of the rest of the state there arent collegiate level players.

I honestly think that folks automatically assume bc a kid is from GA, FL, TX that they're just better athletes.

Holddddd the phone. 3 star prospects and “not collegiate level players” are very very different things. There are way more 3 stars playing power 5 football than 4 and 5 stars. And that’s not including the rest of division 1. People tend to forget as well, recruiting services are usually projecting toward the NFL draft with these rankings. Any evaluator would tell you there are plenty of high 3 stars they think will have better college careers than a bunch of 4 star prospects. It’s about perceived athletic upside and measurables a lot of the time

My point was to illustrate kids in big three states MAY get a bump due to amount of eyes on them, and geographic location. TN seems to hve a large quantity of three stars, in state traditionally.

I see your point.

Completely rational, level headed and fair post.

Totally agree. 👍🏻

1.) you need to get the kids you want
2.) if there’s instate you want it logically follows that you should largely be successful in landing them.
3.) if you can’t land most of what you want locally, logically it follows that likely you won’t land most OUT of state you want.

If you prioritize in state you are not.
I never said prioritize…. Just that if you can’t be extremely successful with your instate wants then you more than likely won’t have much success further away from campus.

Yet we lead for a 5* WR whose home state team is the back to back defending national champions. If not getting your wants in state is indicative of failure out of state that wouldn’t be possible.

And just to go a little further, UGA wanted Matthews and has been actively recruiting him. Does him going to UT signify that Kirby might struggle recruiting? Because the evidence says otherwise.

In-state/out-of-state it just doesn’t matter. 17/18 year old kids are fickle and inexperienced and will make their decisions for whatever reason is most important to them at the time. For most of them location and state ties are not a huge priority, they want to make money and go pro and will listen to whichever school is best at convincing them of that regardless of what team a lot of their teachers may root for or where some HS coach might want to see them play.

Aren’t we doing fantastic in the State of Tennessee…. We have gotten 4 of the top 5 from the state of Tennessee that we are targetting…. Amari is the last one who hasn’t made a decision yet… I’m hoping we make it a clean sweep by getting Amari.
