It’s not changed that much although NIL has made a difference…. Phil followed the same pattern for success…. He got the close instate talent that he wanted…. Recruited strong within 5-6 hours…. Hand picked some guys that would listen from further away….. Ainge, Simon, and Clausen come to mind…Kids cross state lines. As he says, instate talent is an outdated concept. Society is far more transient now. Does proximity matter? Generally, yes. But it doesn’t matter if that kid is in the state or not, as long as he’s proximate. Tennessee has as good or better shot at Atlanta/Charlotte kids than Memphis kids because the former is closer, even though the latter is instate.
There is a TON of proximate talent for Tennessee to recruit from, instate or not.
I don’t know why Memphis keeps getting mentioned…. Everyone realizes how far away it is and almost like it’s another state…. This convo is in a a kids thread that is 1.5 hours away from campus. We are also not really discussing kids that grew up in another state and moved here like Junior Colson.
The fact remains if you aren’t successful with kids you want that endure all the pressure from local people to play at the popular state school then you probably won’t be successful enough outside of the state to reach our goals of being champions.
There are several examples of this: Look at how Missouri struggles with instate talent…. We lose kids every year that get offered late by an instate school and they commit to them… Sylvester Smith is an example this past year…. I don’t think we should take instate kids just bc they are instate…. If we want them, however, we need to be very successful in getting them.
