‘23 TN WR Nathan Spillman (Tennessee)

Think you’re underestimating how hard it is to go from 4.5 to 4.4 (and 4.4 to 4.3 while we’re on the subject).

Not a track guy. At what age do fast guys typically hit their peak? Is improvement after Jr year uncommon? Seems like right equipment and training could help, but my sundial timed sprints did not prepare me for anaylsis.

It depends on the body.

Some people are absolutely getting the most of their ability and can only run 4.6.
Then you got guys who naturally can run that, and with training end up running 4.4 with ease.

If varies from one athlete to another

That's a little difficult to see. Everyone he plays against gives him a 10 or 15 yd cushion with help.
To be fair, high school coaches don't do a lot of developing of kids that you can just let them run deep and tell them to go get it. It's too easy and works too often in high school. It's on the kids too seek development outside their high school programs if they are able.

True. He ran by people. He also broke off some outs and hitches but with such a big cushion they could run that for a 1st down on every play. He's really good with the ball in his hands after the catch. He seems to do well with screens.

He'll have to be developed as a route runner. It may take him a little time to adjust to the level of competition.

Talk about a kid who will come in and be appreciative of the opportunity and will not shy away from hard work and the dedication it will take to see the field and be successful... I'd rather have a kid like this any day over a 4-5* that comes in full of himself and thinks he's owed a starting spot because of his hype... great pickup- the staff will never have to worry about him showing up and putting in the work.

You do realize his high school coach is Trent Dilfer.

I do. Trent is developing his QB's. I don't know who he has on staff as assistants, but high school coaches generally aren't spending a ton of extra time with an individual player. You usually get what your position group gets. That's enough to make you good. It's the extra that you do as an individual that makes you great. This holds true at every level.

I don't know who all Trent has on his staff neither but he is a great football mind and coach and is doing a terrific job at Lipscomb. He will pump out some players for the next level. I believe nate will turn out to be a nice addition when all is said and done and Edwin is going to be a stud. I kept the clock for one of their games last year and was very impressed with him and that whole team actually.

My comments were definitely not a knock on Dilfer. If I still had kids playing ball, I'd be trying to get them to Lipscomb Academy. He's going to put kids in positions to be successful at the high school level. This gives kids a better chance to be seen by a large number of colleges. But great high school coaches still don't maximize development of individuals.
