Tony Basillio confirmed - Kevin Ware won't be released

Classy. I'm glad you put your own selfish desires to see UT succeed in basketball ahead of the opportunity for a kid to maximize his potential and have a shot at making it to the NBA. I seriously can't wrap my head around how so many on here want to force these kids to come to UT even though it will likely be detrimental to their future. Like somebody else said earlier, how would you feel if it was your son involved and the university was trying to hold his future hostage in an effort to lighten the blow from having to fire the previous coach. I bet you'd see things just a little differently. Just let the kids go, it's not like they've even enrolled in school yet.

I probably would have had it on paper that my sons LOI was null and void if the coach I signed with a coach that was fired after I was told he was gonna be here, if thats the only reason why my son was attending that school. Sounds like they had concerns when they asked MH. If I was the parent, and the issue was possible I would have taken the proper steps to give me the option.

How does anyone know that he can not maximize his chances at making it to the NBA by coming here? If that was the main reason why hes attending college.

When it boils down to it I don't see either side that cut and dry.

I would NOT let my kid sign because of a coach! Period. If he indeed do it, he would learn through suffering the consequences.
That's the problem with today's generation, no consequences.

Wow, you're right. Let's just ruin these kids athletic careers because at 17-18 years old they bought into a particular basketball coach.

at that time they probably believed it and they worked to make it happen. Bruce didn't quite work as hard to keep his nose clean. Fact is, what you call a lie today was not a lie when the statement was made.

It doesn't change what the kids were told and that was what the kids based their decision on.

Jones and Ware had already signed on March 6th when Hamilton supposedly told them that Pearl would be coach. It made no difference in them signing. When they signed everyone thought Pearl was going to remain as coach. Pearl, unfortunately, assured that that could not happen. Give it a rest on Hamilton lying. That simply is not the case and has no bearing on the issue now. If they meet with Martin and still want a release, they will very likely be given one.

Even if we don't let them out of their LOI,they still don't have to come here. They would have to sit out a year before going anywhere else and playing. I don't have any problem releasing them from the LOI, but not until they have met and talked with the new coach.

And please enlighten us how it will be detrimental for them to come to UT. :birgits_giggle:

Why does everyone act like these guys somehow owe the new coach something? He played no role in their recruitment and they had likely never even heard of the guy before Sunday. It makes infinitely more sense that they would want out the LOI so they can have the opportunity to sign with one of the other coaches they have built a relationship with throughout this process.

please point to where in the ncaa rulebook that requires a player to go beg the head coach to be released from his LOI?

Please point to where in the NCAA rulebook it requires a school to let a player out of his LOI, whether having spoken to the new head coach or not.

Also, your post wasn't a question, so what's with the question mark? :p

Full disclosure: I'm undecided on the issue. Just playing Devil's advocate to both sides.

it's called class. forcing a kid to beg for a release when he clearly doesn't want to be there isnt' doing either party any favors. cal had a similar situation when montgomery was hired and ended up with a much better player in the end so it's hardly the end of the world.

Most informed post I've seen in the past 24 hours. This IS and always has been the case. It sucks Hamilton hasn't contacted Ware about the situation, but that's not his job (Ware explained his discontent since he hasn't heard from Hamilton, which he feels he is being forced to go to UT). It's the new coach's job, and they are scheduled to meet over the weekend, after the Final Four. If both Ware and Jones want out, Hamilton and Martin will gladly let them go.

Are you saying UT is forcing to beg for a release because he clearly doesn't want to be at UT? If you are referring to Ware and Jones, none of your statement is true. Ware wanted to be released so he could have options. He has yet to explicitly say he does not want to go to UT, period. He wanted to hear from Hamilton about the situation. It sucks that Hamilton can't just give him a quick phone call and say, "be patient, I just want you to meet with the new coach and evaluate your options." But, that is really Martin's job to reassure him that if he still wants out after a meeting, then fine.

I think it's class that the recruits give the guy a chance since they committed and signed with a university.

There's a real difference in forcing a player to beg for a release and just asking that he listen to the recruiting pitch of the new coach.

if he might want to stay at UT how come he wont meet with the new coach? does that really pass your bs test?

"You signed a contract. We'll let you out of it if you really want out, but in return we'd like you to meet with our new coach first." If that's Tennessee's approach, then I think it's perfectly reasonable.

If I'm Martin, I show up to the meeting with the release papers already signed as a good faith gesture.

I agree 100%.
