Tony Dungy Stepping down

Dungy's a great guy, good coach. He did underachieve and should have at least one more Super Bowl win, but 95% of the HCs that come through the NFL would love to have had his career.

No arguing that, but the sports talk guys are acting like this is the loss of JJ in Dallas.

There's very few people in any kind of public career (sports, entertainment, etc) that show the class and character that Dungy has. You hate to lose one from the spotlight.

Agreed. He was a different breed in this industry, but he was fired in Tampa for underachieving.

I know, I was just adding my own little opinion. There's no way I would put Dungy in the league of the greats such as Jimmy, Walsh, Belicheck, etc.

Great. They do well during the regular season. They looked like they were playing their first preseason game when they met up with the Chargers. There were some pretty stupid coaching decisions in that game, too. They have frequently been unprepared for the playoffs. All the regular season success you cited should translate to postseason success. The Colts have gone down in their first playoff game way, way too many times.

Yeah. There are sooooo many coaches out there that will do a better job than CTD. So many coaches that are better men. Yeah, right.

Yeah, I guess Tony was just awful. He only inherited two of the worst franchises at the time he was hired and turned both of them into perenial playoff contenders.
The colts had a target on thier back for almost a decade now (just like the patriots). The entire AFC south has had to design thier teams to try and compete with the colts.
He has always had his teams in position to do well. Underachievment by the players in playoffs past is little fault of his. (Vanderjat for one)

Name more than two current coaches in the NFL now that have had more success in thier careers than he.

If that's your attitude there's no need to say anymore. And no one said Dungy was awful. The Colts had a bad season in 2001, the year prior to Dungy taking over. But just before that they were 13-3 and 10-6. They weren't the worst team in the league.

Its not an attitude. Its an observation from watching every single colts game since 2000.

Press conference on ESPNN now. It's obvious how much he is revered, loved and respected by those closest to him.

A Super Bowl ring, 10 consecutive playoff seasons---obviously the guy's a joke.

I didn't call him a "joke"; he just can't win in the playoffs. I'm sure he's a great guy, revered by everybody, etc. etc., but I've never seen any evidence that he does much to earn his reputation other than stand on the sideline while Peyton Manning plays offense. (Dungy's a defensive guy, right? They why have they pretty much sucked on that side of the ball almost every year?) He clearly never figured out football in Janary, If I were a Colts fan, I'd be pretty sick of racking up all those 11-win seasons and then flaming out in the playoffs. I mean, for all those great teams, Dungy's Colts only even made it to the AFC Championship game twice. That's failure.

I found a photo of Vercingetorix, if anybody's interested---

This was a tired internet joke five years ago. Maybe you're just now getting it on your WebTV.

When I saw him interviewed a few weeks ago, I got the feeling he was going to leave the colts. I wish him all the best.

If I were a Colts fan I'd probably be glad to see him go. Considering the teams he's had, a 9-10 record in the postseason is terrible.

he brought a lombardi trophy to indy. those things aren't easy to win i don't care who your players are. if you don't want to give him credit for that super bowl win then you can't give him blame for the 9-10 playoff record.

Dungy is a special man and a credit to pro football--I wish him the best in all his endeavors. As I coach, I can't help but think he was overrated, but I could be wrong---a superficial opinion from afar. But let's face it: Manning has carried the Colts on his back since year his second year with the team; without him, the Colts never have smelled the playoffs. As for Caldwell, I'm not sure why Polian is so enamored with the guy--who had a terrible record at Wake in his only head coaching stint and otherwise as been a fairly anonymous assistant for many years.

overrated? how many winning seasons did tampa have before he arrived?

Agreed. Dungy is a great guy, not the coaching giant he is being made out to be today. The media can't wait to crown him king, but underachievement was a hallmark of his career.

the funny thing is, the same guys saying dungy underachieves, praise bob stoops. bob stoops is the tony dungy of college football minus the class. i'm a steeler fan not an indy fan for the record.

putting jimmy or belicheck in the same league with walsh would be just as bad. walsh was an innovator and an offensive genius. i would put walsh alongside lombardi.
