True, and it's especially hard, if not impossible, to think of a single successful coach who immediately followed a long time winning coach, never mind an iconic legend in a place accustomed to competing annually for championships.for 40 years, my motto has been far more coaching hires are failures than successes. I predicted in 2000 that once Fulmer retired or was fired Tennessee would struggle to find a winner.
It’s really not. He’s done well at NAIA, good at Fresno, and sure great at Washington, but he’s never been anywhere long enough to truly supplant a legacy. And recruiting is dismal. Can’t win in the SEC with that recruiting record. This is the best hire Bama could have made. This guy has won everywhere he's been. Ughhhh.
He's going to have access to orders of magnitude more resources at Bama for recruiting and it'll be a much easier sell to convince recruits to come play for Bama than Washington. He beat Oregon twice with an inferior roster. The man is a great coach. All I hope is that there are growing pains transitioning to the SEC.It’s really not. That is my thought as well...I mean, Saban still having an office there? Who is the true head coach? Can Saban keep his nose out of the program? Will there be too many cooks in the kitchen?
If he struggles next year and December signing class may not be good enough to survive. if he misses CFP 12….that is 12 not 4 then does not have Top 3 signing class, the little “a” will meltdown. It’s really not. The mystique is gone, and rival sec schools will use the departure of Saban to successfully recruit against bama. Deboer doesn't set the world on fire recruiting anyway. Kiffin would have absolutely killed it there.
He’ll have success Year 1 and maybe 2 with the foundation Saban has given him. But long term, I just don’t see him having success. And no, not Saban success, I mean general SEC success that SEC programs expect, especially the ones of Bama caliber. If he struggles next year and December signing class may not be good enough to survive. if he misses CFP 12….that is 12 not 4 then does not have Top 3 signing class, the little “a” will meltdown.
Not sure Florida will pass on Kiffin next year. You know with our curse vs UF that's exactly where he'll end up. Spurrier II.I really am surprised that Alabama wouldn't give Kiffin an opportunity. It's tough to follow a legend, but Kiffin has ties to Alabama and has certainly done exceedingly well with Ole Miss up to and including capitalizing on the new portal/NIL reality so he'll either hit the ground running or keep things afloat for a new heir in 3/4/5 years. Administration needs to get over it (he's, seemingly, matured extensively over the years) and if boosters are saying no then 'Bama brass needs to evaluate how much their money means if it comes at the expense of football prominence.
Yeah Kiffin has sec cred, can recruit, and has a brilliant offensive mind. He would have taken over and brought with him some elite talent and undoubtedly an elite transfer qb. The lack of a great qb likely kept sabans final team out of the championship game.I really am surprised that Alabama wouldn't give Kiffin an opportunity. Kiffin also knows what it is like to play in Neyland. Their lost and maybe down the road our gain.I really am surprised that Alabama wouldn't give Kiffin an opportunity.
