Tracking Saban's Replacement Thread

Nah, I think Norvell was the best of their limited options.

This fella DeBoer is on fire, but he has only been in P5 for two years. Anything can happen for two years, ask Ed Orgeron or Gene Chizhik or Larry Coker or Dennis Erickson (twice, at Oregon State and Arizona State) or...well, the list of coaches who were hot for a year or two then crashed into reality is long.

Norvell was their best bet, short of getting Urban Meyer to come back to coaching.

Go Vols!

for 40 years, my motto has been far more coaching hires are failures than successes. I predicted in 2000 that once Fulmer retired or was fired Tennessee would struggle to find a winner.

Except for he went 11-2 last year, won 11 or 12 at Fresno and has multiple NAIA championships. The man can flat out coach. He’ll have resources he’s never had before at Bama. This is the best hire out there from a pure coaching standpoint.
None of that indicates success at Bama in the new SEC - but that doesn’t mean he won’t be successful. Just surprising they had to go outside the obvious circles. Even Saban failed miserably in the NFL meaning that sometimes great coaches are unable to rise above a very different environment.

I really hate to defend the Gumps but I don't think anyone wants to follow the GOAT. Deboer better pray he makes the 12 team playoff of they will want his head.
I agree. It's an impossible job. Much easier for coaches to stay where they've built something and accept life changing raises to their salary. Step one better be retaining the current talent Saban has amassed. Some of the players may have committed to play for Saban rather than the school. Regardless, he will have no excuses because he now has way more talent than the team he just took to the NC game.

I would say that Saban talked to the administration months ago and they've been researching for his replacement for a while.
they probably already know who they want.
Really???? No way it wasn't leaked. I think it was a decision he had personally made, but I also think that he wanted to win one more. Worried me when he didn't, but I think NIL and the portal rules had him calling it quits even though he didn't get one more.

I also never forget that Rich Rodriguez turned down Alabama right before they hired Saban. It's always a crap-shoot no matter what school is involved.

I’ve said many times, Drew Brees not going to Miami was the biggest butterfly effect to impact college football. If he goes to Miami and Saban gets his guy instead of Culpepper, Bama hires someone else. Maybe Richrod.
