Tracking Saban's Replacement Thread

This is the best on paper hire they could have made. I hope he falls on his ass, but the Resume is very good.
Nah, I think Norvell was the best of their limited options.

This fella DeBoer is on fire, but he has only been in P5 for two years. Anything can happen for two years, ask Ed Orgeron or Gene Chizhik or Larry Coker or Dennis Erickson (twice, at Oregon State and Arizona State) or...well, the list of coaches who were hot for a year or two then crashed into reality is long.

Norvell was their best bet, short of getting Urban Meyer to come back to coaching.

Go Vols!

I'm most interested to see how he fills his staff out. He's 29th in recruiting. Undoubtedly, Bama will give him a big boost, but it's nothing like the SEC.

If he fills out his staff with ace recruiters, I think he'll be successful (see RG at Tennessee). If he doesn't, They could still be very good but not elite.

There is the possibility of a lot of highly rated kids hitting the portal in the aftermath from Bama and Washington and if Norvel gets canned from FSU also but I don't think that happens

They weren’t equally talented though on paper. Where does Washington match up vs Texas, Oregon and Michigan in recruiting rankings? He did what Saban couldn’t do this year and beat Texas.
They played unnecessarily tight games all season long, and gave Texas every opportunity to win the Sugar Bowl before Sark decided to Sark it up. They had a better QB than Oregon or Michigan, and I'd put their WR starters on par with Texas and Oregon.

Just see DeBoer as Drinkwitz-tier in the SEC.

Doesn't matter who they get, he won't measure up. May do well, but the dominance they had with Saban is over.
Yeah, that will be unmatched in our lifetime. The only place is down. A 9-win season won't garner much more than 2, maybe 3 years' worth of job security. It's really a bad job to follow Saban. Following the next man, won't be so bad. JMO

Deboer will hang 40 on our choking coach

Even the often proclaimed "best job in college football" had to settle for their 4th choice at best. No telling how many were actually ahead of DeBoer on the ADs wish list.

The best part is that fanbase is so disillusioned that literally anyone will be a disappointment to them. Belicheck might suffice, but they hold Saban is such high esteem, that there is no slam dunk hire. I can't wait for the meltdown.
That's the thing - if DeBoer really is a 'flavor of the week' and not 'good enough', it's likely that person doesn't exist at the moment, and Bama will have to 'settle' and maybe go through a few down years before the 'right guy' comes available. The chance of someone not missing a beat and producing 10-11 wins right out of the gate is far from a slam dunk.

Won't go to a bama message board but I wonder who the fans wanted to hire?

yeah... its gonna be deboer and he wants the job.. just talked to a buddy down there but washington is coming with counter offer..
I AM NOT SAYING I HAVE INSIDE SOURCES..
just a friend in Tuscaloosa that talks to people is all.. not an inside source

If it's DeBoer, they made the best choice after Lanning IMO. The options were very limited right at the moment.

Now whether Bama fans feel that way, who knows?

Would laugh for a long time if DeBoer stays in Washington after all this.

One thing that works in DeBoer's favor is he appears to be very even keeled, which will be huge in that pressure cooker. Dabo would have come apart at the seams dealing with that fan base.

I really hate to defend the Gumps but I don't think anyone wants to follow the GOAT. Deboer better pray he makes the 12 team playoff of they will want his head.
