Trade Deadline/Rumors thread

I don't think it would be a question of could they sign him, but rather would they want to/be able to. Certainly not if Chipper comes back next season. Regardless, there would be no signing of extension now. He WILL be a free agent.

They'll need a LF for next year if Chipper retires, and they don't have any prospects that are ready to come up.

Plus with Beltran's health history, I just don't think that's a smart option.

Chipper won't retire.

It's literally 50/50. If we win the WS, he'll retire. The only reason he didn't last year is because he wanted to try and make a playoff run with this team since he couldn't last year.

If you are implying that the braves have a 50 percent chance of winning the world series, I'll have to disagree.

He's a strict two month rental. I know you hate that, but he can't play CF for long periods of time, and we'll have a logjam next year. Because if Chipper doesn't retire next year, I think the FO has handed Jordan the starting CF job for 2012, and keep Martin in left.
Edit: I hate it, not UT.

Yeah I do hate ut, but I'm slowly getting over myself. I really would like to sew Upton, or Pence. Even if both would be long term rentals. I guess Upton would be my first choice.

Thanks also for your response Regulator.

It would be dumb. I wouldn't be opposed to having him sign a one year deal if Chipper retires however.

That certaintly ain't happening, not with Boras as his agent. I think he'd be a good signing, for the right amount, even for multiple years as long as that's based on Carlos Beltran circa 2011, not circa 2004. He is who he is now, an aging but still productive player. Not going to steal bases anymore, not suited for CF on a regular basis. Ideally, he'd go to the AL where he could DH on occasion, but he's not interested in being anyone's full-time DH. He's a thinner Lance Berkman with a little less pop.

IF the Braves go after/acquire Beltran, IMO, they should go for broke this season. Minor for Beltran, and Schafer/Delgado/B Prospect for Michael Bourn.

In the words of Jake Taylor...

"Win the whole f***in' thing."

I'm not into the whole "One traded player will decide the division/pennant", but if the Cards get Bell, that might be able to get them into the playoffs. They've blown, what, 17 saves this year? Take have that away and they are running away with the division.

No

Cards are 1-13 in louse and melleans last 14 starts. A starter is a must.

Upton (IMO) would be the best fit for multiple reasons.

Let's give them a good (not great closer). Instead of 17 blown saves, they have blown 9. That's a seven game lead on everyone else in the central.

I think you guys could use a starter however.

You do relize the primary cause for those blown saves got cut, right?

If anything another strter would allow mccellean to go back to the pen where he is both better and more valuable.

FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Reds scouted the Mariners' Jason Vargas and Doug Fister in Toronto this week.
Vargas has two more years of salary arbitration and Fister has yet to reach arbitration, so the Mariners don't have any extra incentive to deal either hurler. But, they'll surely be willing to listen to offers for both. It's clear that the Reds plan to add a starter before the deadline, as they've also been connected to Ubaldo Jimenez and James Shields.

B.J. Upton is going to be traded very, very soon.

"BJ Upton out of the game, Desmond Jennings pulled from game tonight in Durham, HMMMMMMMM."

Rays currently carrying five OF, Upton is gone.

They sent Brignac down, which means it looks like a SS is going to be sent there way.

I'm hearing a lot of Ian Desmond/B.J. Upton rumors.

Brignac should have been called down long ago. Upton is going to go off with whatever team he goes to, I just have that feeling. He has the skills but he is so mental, obviously he needs a change of scenery. The Nats were hot on him from the beginning, wouldn't shock me if he ends up there.

I cannot help but wonder if the Cards/Rays are about to look into something for Rasmus if/when Upton is traded. This is only going to add fuel to the fire.
