Transfer Portal Thread

Tennessee has spoken with Justin Powell in the last couple of days. I would call him a priority for them and one of their top transfer targets. Feels like the Vols feel good about their chances if he stays in the SEC.

Based on conversation I had tonight not sure that Tennessee is going to push very hard for Noah Locke. Word I got was that he is leaving Florida in order to try and be more of a PG and not just a spot up shooter. Tennessee's only interest in him is as a spot up shooter who made 43% from three this year.

I'm getting the feeling that adding a shooter is a bigger priority than adding size if Fulkerson returns, which today the feeling is that he will. Could be a different vibe tomorrow.

Agreed. they played Kansas, WVU, Iowa, VA, Auburn out of conference. Baylor got cancelled last second. That’s more than a respectable schedule. Even before acknowledging what they’ve done in the tournament.
After the Michigan/UCLA game, those highlights will become must-see TV, for me. But now, Rob Lewis has me thinking UT may get Powell and that makes me ecstatic.
Edit: oops I quoted the wrong post, but since I did, Bruce, u forgot UT was also supposed to play the Zags this year

I’m gonna assume we get 2-3 transfers depending on BHH commit/not. and if Fulky returning or not.
- with that being said we need at least 1 - 3pt specialist and 1- low post production.. and then depending on the factors above would dictate another wing or post

So if I was to choose my ideal 3 transfers (in no order)
1) - Parker Stewart G - can shoot it from 3 but is athletic enough and good ball handler.
2) Qudus Wahab C - defensive post presence and rebounder, low post offense.

3) this is my flex could see post or wing so I’ll do one of each.
- Jayden Gardner- PF athletic strong low post scorer with jump shot
- Noah Gurley SF (wing) with length but he’s an outside shooter and athletic rim runner.

I know we’ve been mentioned with 3 PT specialist from Auburn but for whatever reason I just don’t have a good gut feeling or vibe with him.

Parker Stewart, Wahab and Justin Powell are our 3 transfers and add BHH, Tamba and Q to UT's recruiting class with Mashack and Chandler. That's my dream, well might as well throw in the Giraffe, Aidoo, also. Man, Vols would win a lot of games with just these kids, add Vescovi, JJJ, Bailey and Fulk and that looks like another preseason top 15 team, imo.

I just fear Gardner is Anosike 2.0 and can't get it done in the SEC. Stewart, Wahab, Mitchell and Powell, give UT 2 or 3 of these kids, please
Well the AAC is much better than what Anosike played in, also he dropped 21pts 15rbds 4ast earlier this year against Houston to lead ECU to an upset of them...

If we feel good about BHH why would we bring this guy in? And he’d only be here a year? Granted he was basically his entire team and I’m sure drew a lot of defensive attention, but his shooting % isn’t that great. Seems like on odd fit tbh

12pts 6rbs 5ast 44%3pt on 4.3att, and would have 4 years of eligibility remaining...Powell would be an absolutely slam dunk of a get. He’s likely you’re backup PG when Chandler is out so Vescovi nor Bailey have to worry about that, but he’s better suited to play the 2 or even 3 at his size so he also brings us that knockdown shooter from 3.

"Quadas Wahab is a really nice player who would probably start here.

Hearing they feel they are in excellent shape (as in done deal) for the following guys:
Tamba
Huntley Hatfield
QDE Quentin Diboundje Eyobo ... (French Kid)

That leaves them with 2 more spots right now, 3 if another player leaves roster. We're expecting another player to leave if the plan holds.
One spot is going to Tyreke Key from Indiana State in all likelihood. This would leave one spot or two.
Other spot is going to a big man like the kid from Georgetown, Colorado or maybe the Garner kid Tony mentioned already ... etc.
I expect one more slot to open up. If Fulky doesn't come back I think they use it on another big man, if he does they probably use it on another ball handler.
Georgetown thinks Wahab had Zoom meeting with Maryland during their COVID pause in February.
Fulkerson indecision also hurting them because teams telling bigs they won't get minutes over Huntley Hatfield/Fulkerson. "

After Kellen Grady, Justin Powell was #2 on my guard wish list. I would be ecstatic.

My ONLY concern with Powell is that he didn't look great in the small handful of games he played in the SEC before his injury. I would still absolutely love to get him, but I want to see what he can do against SEC competition, not just the smaller schools Auburn (mostly) played in non-con play.

He did put up 26 against Memphis, but he only scored 7 vs. Gonzaga, 4 vs. Arkansas, and 2 vs. A&M in 75 combined minutes and shot a combined 4 of 21 in those games.

All this transfer crappy what if reading is like Easter egg hunting. You hope to fill your basket and some snot nosed kid runs up and grabs your egg before you can. Someone make a decision please.

Tyreke Key doesn’t move the needle much for me, but I get their line of thinking there...kid is an In-State product and winner and has experience in one of the better MM conferences. Can play PG or off the ball, would bring veteran leadership to the team and not be a guy complaining about minutes...and he would only take up a spot for 1 year.

That’s something to keep in mind; you take 3 transfers with multiple years and then also add Tamba/Q/BHH and you’re on paper returning 13 scholarship players (which is the limit), for that following year...now yes in all likelihood Chandler & BHH will be gone, but as far as fall signing period goes that could be a little dicey...and in 2022 we have 3-4 guys already we have been targeting for awhile.

I wonder if this is why we maybe haven’t seen more movement with Stewart, staff probably prefers Powell and don’t feel they can take both plus a big man transfer (that has eligibility).

Yeah, I mean playing 3 full seasons in conference with Houston, Cincinnati, UConn, Witchita State, Tulsa, UCF, & Memphis isn't bad competition at all. AAC is a stronger basketball conference than they get credit for.

Can't only look at points though.

Had 6 rebounds and 9 assist against Arkansas as well (but also 7 turnovers)
Had 4 rebounds and 2 assist against A&M

Plus a pair of steals in both games, gotta remember he was still a freshmen playing in just his 9th and 10th games in college ball. He wasn't a 5 star one & done prospect so I'm not too shocked he struggled against the SEC competition. Arkansas finished 2nd in conference and did just make the Elite Eight and A&M despite not having a great record was the 4th best scoring defense in the SEC this year.

So, Tyreke Key, Jayden Gardner, and Justin Powell. Hmmmm idk
Better than Gaines and Pember. Multi year Powell would be beneficial too. We might not be as good defensively (missing Pons, Johnson, and Springer) but it’s an offensive league nowadays. Add in Chandler, BHH, Mashack, Fulky, Junior JJJ, Junior Vescovi, and senior Bailey I think we will easily be top 20 again. Will be a better mix of experience and young talent than last year.

Best thing that could happen is that Keon Johnson returns but I’m not expecting anyone to hold their breath here.

It’s up to the kids that got themselves into the dog house to do what’s expected of them in order to get out. Any coach would lose their team and all respect if they let them out of the dog house without doing what they are expected to do. Admiral responded, did what was expected of him, and has become a 21st century legend. It’s best to just let go of those that refuse to or are unable to get on board with the program. Rewarding them with playing time if they haven’t lived up to what’s expected is the worst possible approach. College kids are dumb.
The posters that have an issue with these situations don't understand the priority of culture within a program that wants sustained success with a rock solid foundation. As a coach, I have handled it like posters on here clamor for and the team has paid the price. You don't sacrifice a small short-term bump in production when it erodes the culture. Culture must be priority #1. Now that doesn't mean everyone needs to like it. But it really is the best process.
