Transfer Portal Thread

When is he going to have to “rebuild”? He can theoretically keep his entire team for next season. Not a single player is in any first round mock draft as far as I have seen.

He’s got one of the top PG’s in the country committed for this upcoming season. And he is in it for some of the top talent in 2022. I’ve seen more than enough. He’s the real deal and he isn’t going to have to “rebuild” any time soon thanks to the COVID rule.
"Smart people are constantly learning and evolving themselves. Average people "know" from their experiences. Stupid people already have the answers"....unknown author....spot on!

Any other North Carolina players besides Kessler hitting the portal that Tennessee might look at?

Jim Boeheim sounds off on Walker Kessler transfer

Love this article. Hope we can take advantage of the Portal situation, but still think kids should be more committed to schools they originally chose...

Adapt or die, Jim. For better or worse, we’re entering a new era of college basketball. Looks like there will be two fronts to recruit on now, high school and the portal.

It seems this is partially why Roy retired. The old guard is going to not like this and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of them retire in the next 1-2 years.

Gary Parrish talked a little a bit about this today. Instead of worrying about the next recruiting class after a season is over, a coach has to re-recruit his players and recruit transfers. He says while coaches do make a lot of money, they work many hours and spend all year working their jobs. He understood why a 70 year old, whose made millions, would be tired of it and decide to devote his time to other things.

Roy’s beef should be with college administrators including his own. That’s who the NCAA answers to, collectively. They know there’s way too much money to be made and are eagerly going down this road of the professionalization of college sports. That being said he’s acting like a martyr but he’s benefited handsomely from the system

Tennessee has reached out to literally dozens of players. One that we would say is perhaps further along than some others is Auburn transfer Justin Powell. Not that we consider Tennessee the leader there or anything, but there have been some substantial conversations between Powell and the staff. Tennessee is also serious about East Carolina transfer Jayden Gardner and a couple of conversations have taken place.
Tennessee is also seriously interested in Georgetown transfer Qudus Wahab and has reached out. One name that is not currently in the portal is Tennessee native Tyreke Key at Indiana State. There’s been some chatter that he may look to move on and if that happens the Vols will be in the picture.

You’ve got it backwards. College administrations have kept this monopoly going a long time and they are finally getting squeezed from a legal perspective and they know they have no recourse or leg to stand on.

It’s looking like even our conservative Supreme Court is going to rule against their amateurism nonsense.

That applies to "old" fans, too...at least this one. No loyalty. It's hard to enjoy what the game has become. Fundamentals are sorely lacking in today's game. Well, Gonzaga is pretty damned solid, but for most, it's nowhere close. I liken it to the NFL. You used to see players drafted and they retired with the team that drafted them. Fans got to know them and really became attached to players. Those players kinda owned the cities they played in. Now you can have a guy leave on a whim. It's impossible to really bond with a "hired gun" so to speak.

Look at Keon and Springer vs Grant and Admiral. I know it's not apples to apples, but the premise is true. Grant and Admiral are beloved by this fan base much like the players of old. Springer and Keon won't move the needle at all for me. They put in a year because they had to as per the rules. Just the way times have changed the game I guess, but it doesn't make it any more palatable. They should do away with that rule and let players like that just jump right into the NBA. No sense in this one and done BS.

Free agency in amateur athletics and/or paying players will probably end my interest in the game. Of course, the camel has his nose under the tent so it's only a matter of time I suppose. Sad to see it all end like this.

I understand the sentiment of this all and I think most of it is fair, but is the only thing keeping you attached to college athletics is the fact that the players remain unpaid? Is it REALLY that big of a deal to let them profit a bit off their talent instead of schools continuing to rake in billions of dollars while a kid gets suspended if he sells his own signature for like $5?

The whole system is flawed, regardless of whether or not they end up getting paid one day or not. I love the University of Tennessee and I will continue to love it even if/when their players start to make some money.

Im not sure what you think I have backwards based on this response. The NCAA isn’t some independently corrupt organization. They represent all of their member schools. So it’s the colleges and their administrators who are responsible here.

Also there is nothing nonsense about amateurism. The vast majority of competition the NCAA governs is certainly amateur. The conflict is how they manage non-power 5/non-revenue sports with the power-5/revenue under the same umbrella. The current model is unsustainable. However I think much of the problem is caused by the NBA and NFL. And so the outrage over the NCAA is misplaced. The NFL wants a free farm system and THEY are the ones who make rules which basically force kids to play in college where they won’t be paid. Th NBA is now providing a different route so kudos to them. Now any kid who goes to college to play does so willingly and agrees to the rules. The NFL should follow suit. Either pay for the NCAA to be their farm system or they need to open one for their own.
