'24 Transfer Portal

I agree about getting at least 3 OL from the portal. Even if all those guys you mentioned do come back, we've seen how injury prone they are. I'm all for bringing in competition at every spot. Having said that the portal is a 2 way street and some can throw their hats into the ring with the NFL. Heupel may be trying to finesse things to avoid kids leaving. Tough, tough position for head coaches these days.

As for the WR's, I think we need at least 2 there due to the same concern over injuries and those freshmen looked like they still have a way to go before they're up to speed....and honestly, I'm not sure our evals on those 2 were accurate.

Posted elsewhere that unless there's a HS TE that I'm unaware of, we certainly need 2 TE from the portal. Joly has to be THE one.

My biggest concern is the secondary. The youth didn't get playing time this year, and that's going to rear its head next season. I want none of the senior DBs back.I'd rather go out and get upgrades in the portal. Given our secondary performance, surely that can't be so hard.

Heupel better see what FSU did in the portal and take advantage of it. At last look, UGA has THREE of the top 10 HS recruits committed including the top QB. They're cherry picking in the portal as well. I haven't checked bama, but I suspect they'll be top 5 as well. UT has to get serious in the portal and stock up on guys that can play. Even then I'm not sure we can close the gap on those 2 anytime soon. I know you have to keep HS recruiting as your foundation, but until the rules change, this is how you have to operate. Hate saying this, but there are position coaches that have shown that they will play and develop youngsters while others have shown me nothing. If you can't develop it, buy it already done for you.

If Heupel and Co. waste a single year of what might be a generational QB like Nico or Nico feels like there's no chance of playing for anything more than 8 wins a season and transfers, you can bet the good will Heupel earned last season will be quickly forgotten and wolves will be at the door. The game has changed. The "calendar" of getting 4-5 years to flip and build a roster for a coach is long gone with the portal. Everyone says Heupel is incredibly smart. Let's see how he handles the portal this year. That's going to tell me a lot.
There’s about a 500% more chance that top QB UGA is getting transfers over Nico transferring.
We done seen 3-4 5* QB’s transfer from UGA

How would this affect E. Herring? I read somewhere that he is wanting more $$ or a threat to leave (not sure how true). And IF he goes to the portal, how does it affect his brother?
These sure are fun times both ways with lots of moving parts.

Go Vols!!
Herring more $$$$???
I’d tell him I’m calling you a horse and carriage to take you away,
Because he’s to slow to catch a cab!!

We don’t know if this is true. Let’s not run with this as fact and it lead to people questioning the kid’s character or commitment to the team. Not calling you out btw.

Is he any good? How does he compare with the big names being tossed around so far?
50 receptions for 629 and 5 TDs.

Not saying he's a SEC type, or UT should look, but he's fast and a great returner (2 punt return TDs)................Just hurts Peay losing him and their other two best receivers.

Wells and Sheppard/Fleming both started at their previous stops. I’m not trying to persuade you way or the other. You have your opinion and I have mine. It’s fine.

I still think moving Bru to TE and using him like Fant would make him a ton of money. Pair him with Joly and it’s pretty scary if you were to land Shep and Wells. Cause then you have Bru creating way more mismatches as a TE and his blocking there would help a **** ton.

QB: Nico
RB: Sampson / Seldon
WR: Shepp or another proven transfer WR / Wells / Squirrel
TE: Bru (Fant Role) / Joly

That’s just nasty to me.
Shepherd: Strikes me as a very good possession receiver, but I don't think he's the kind of guy who takes a game over. Compared to Keyton, he has better hands maybe competes for the ball better and runs harder after the catch.. but in terms of getting separation or making guys miss - I don't see much of a difference.

Joly: I don't understand why everyone assumes he's better than Ethan Davis on Jonathan Echols.

Wells: I don't know much about him, but impressive numbers.

Echols is admittedly a project at TE. He isn't coming in and giving you immediate help at that position.

Ethan Davis is much more polished and hardly saw the field as a freshman.

Joly at least provides experience and demonstrated ability at a high level. Not sure anyone expects him to come in and perform at an all-SEC level, but he's an experienced body who gives you options at the position.

Joly would be coming here to start. You don’t have to believe he’s better than Echols and Davis. The fact we have 2 TEs coming in this wkend should tell you that.

Doesn’t mean Davis and/or Echols won’t be better when older, but clearly staff is saying they’re not ready.

Not really sure how to unpack your comment about Joly but I'll give it a shot. I think the problem with Ethan Davis and Echols is that one has taken like 10 snaps in college (don't quote me because I'm not looking it up), and the other is still in high school coming off an injury. Joly on the other hand looked VERY impressive in our game against them and has a lot of film of being good in D1. Based on the current evidence available, I think it's quite reasonable to assume he will be better, however, that doesn't mean he will be. Regardless of whether he is better or not, we need more than 2 TE's on our roster and you go get the best available that is out there.

I didn't realize staff was pushing for Joly. I thought it was just fan hype. If there's 2 TEs coming in, that definitely says something. Hopefully Davis will continue to develop. I forgot to mention Okoye... I'd be surprised if he and and Davis aren't ready by 2024 but it happens.

Okoye just started playing American football in 2021.

I’d be shocked if he saw the field in ‘24

Okoye is probably the longest shot of all of them to see the field in 2024.
