'24 Transfer Portal

We appear to have been focusing on something else.

sticking around for one more year—-John Campbell, Cooper Mays, Omarr Norman-Lott, Gerald Mincey, Bryson Eason, big Omari Thomas.

I’m sorry but that’s some serious work being done.
Have all of those guys made it official they are coming back? I know Campbell has. But have all the others you listed?

I don’t think it’s that Tennessee doesn’t think highly of him. It’s that we don’t want to pay whatever obscene NIL he is apparently hunting for. There is difference, IMO. Clearly, he is a good player. But we have a lot of young talent that has the potential to be as good if not better and isn’t making demands of our staff.
I guess that's what makes me curious. We don't want to meet his NIL demands, but one of these other programs will? And do we not want to meet his demands, or is it we can't meet his demands? And if a team like Georgia or Bama can meet his demands, what does that say about how strong their NIL must be considering how much they have to be paying with all of those bule chippers? I'll be interested in where he actually ends up.

Portal going poorly and we didn’t keep class together and lost a great TE prospect which is a big need. On cruise control heading into year 4…
Lmao didn’t keep the class together? We lost Echols and it been stated by AP and Co that nobody at Tennessee was phased by that loss.

Tennessee hasn't missed on anyone it seriously wants and is realistic in the portal yet. Echols is a great DL prospect who plays TE. 2024 recruiting class was very weak in general. Tennessee was more picky than I would like but they got a strong class

Just saw where Cayden Green from OU entered the portal. Wonder if he could play inside on the line? Listed as an OT, but at 6'4 1/2", 315lbs, he'd make a good OG.

I am getting a sneaky feeling Heupel and the staff are waiting until after the bowl games to hit the portal hard.

Notre Dame transfer Holden Staes wrapped up his Georgia visit on Thursday and won’t be at Oklahoma this weekend. This is going to be the Bulldogs or Tennessee. We firmly believe Tennessee could still be the pick here as we head into the weekend. The other big option for a transfer tight end would be Jordan Dingle of Kentucky. He will be here starting on Friday in what we believe is a ‘first one in’ gets the spot type situation.

Tennessee is in the middle of a visit with Florida transfer Jalen Famer. Tennessee is looking for help in the interior of the offensive line and Farmer would provide some depth there. He will wrap up his visit late tomorrow afternoon and we should have full coverage here at Volquest. Oregon State transfer Jermod McCoy wrapped up his visit on Thursday and is off to Texas A&M. He has talked about taking some visits in January, but as of Thursday night, we do not believe that will happen as this shapes up to be an Aggie versus Tennessee battle. You have to wonder if playing in his home state of Texas is too much for Tennessee to overcome, but Tennessee did a nice job with his visit as he and his dad really jelled with Willie Martinez. Martinez and the dad have several mutual connections.

UCF transfer Corey Thornton might make it here this weekend. He signed a waiver with Ole Miss that would prevent him from visiting other Southeastern Conference schools earlier this week, but did not understand what signing the paper would mean. He has asked out of that and Ole Miss apparently has granted his wish, but things have not been totally cleared up and until they are he cannot visit Tennessee. He is at Louisville this weekend and if things get cleared up would head to Knoxville after that. Tulane transfer Chris Brazzell is in the middle of his whirlwind week of visits. After his visit to Tennessee, he went to Utah, then was off to see Washington and Colorado. The Buffaloes appear to be Tennessee’s biggest competition with their stability at the quarterback position heading into next season.

Villanova cornerback Devon Marshall will be in town later today until Saturday morning before heading to N.C. State. He is one the Vols like, but we do not believe he is the top of the defensive back board coming into the visit. A&M transfer Fidel Diggs has told Tennessee he will visit Knoxville in January.

According to VQ the issue is 2 parts.

1. Guys learning on the job in the SEC. Like Alec this year and Kelsey Pope last year.
2. Our board is not wide enough to offset misses.

We put too many eggs in too few baskets and had
underexperienced guys take some lumps.

Josh likes to promote from within and it may work, but we've had growing pains. TE is the best example this year and WR (one take) was a good example last year.
Point #2 has followed us into recruiting the portal, IMO.

Not gonna rush to judge until the dust settles, but all this hype about Spyre and our portal resources might be pie in the sky or perhaps we spent it on Nico and our current roster? Dunno, but with all the recent commits to other schools and our affinity for FCS "fits", it certainly doesn't feel like we're gaining any ground. Right now it's a little disappointing and yeah, concerning. Hope Heupel is reading the room in this league correctly.
Our Oline was about to be a major concern. Now it seems multiple NIL deals later like it could be a strength next year. And yes. If Nico is Nico. And I think he will be we have a player capable of being the best in the SEC. We have a great offensive head coach. Oline protecting Nico would have been my #1 priority. Next upgrade defense where we can. I think we’re on the right track. Like to land a couple upgrades. But keeping your own goods is also winning in the portal.

There is one issue that will be very interesting this year. Halze and his play calling. Now I do think he was hampered by Milton’s limitations. I don’t think Nico has those limitations. So it will be very interesting to see if the offense looks more like 2022 than this past year.
