Update - Private broadcaster in #Turkey CNN Turk has stopped broadcasting and a presenter has said soldiers are in the studio control room

That's why Obama opposed it.

To be fair, it's not in our interest to publicly support a coup against one of our allies. Especially if Intel shows it has low probability of success. Even though I have the Erdogan regime a small step above the house of Saud on my despicable allies list, I would have probably reacted the same way Obama did.

They really needed to arrest the Sultan before showing their hand. Damn shame, I hate to see what Erdogan's next play is.

You guys are unbelievable. Obama "backed" the current government when it became clear he was going to win. We don't control the outcome of it.

Had it been the other way around, you'd complain he supported the anti democratic side, just because it was winning.

Just more knee jerk crap from you.

That's kind of the first rule of a coup. Get the current leaders arrested first.

This one didn't exactly seem well planned out.

These situations tend to bring out strong opinions. And the reality is just as the sun rises every morning there will be a defending post from the left no matter what Obama does. My guess is despite Erdogan's Islamic strong views they owe him something for favors done. Not sure why else someone from the West would back this guy.

Erdogan Has Nobody to Blame for the Coup But Himself | Foreign Policy

“I will raise a religious generation,” he declared, turning his back on the secularism that Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish republic, imposed on the country more than 90 years ago. Rather than address the 1,400 percent increase in the murder rate of women, he instructed women to stay at home and have three children, and railed not only against abortions, but also C-sections, as violations of God’s will.

Evidently they had guys there but the folks in Ankara jumped the gun. I wonder if Civil War is a possibility? Turkey is an interesting mix of cultures with very different worldviews.

Read a great book on the Crimean War, gave good insight into that part of the world and their stance historically.

He sides with people like Erdogan but then threatens to essentially sever trade with England if they vote for their own sovereignty.

You were saying?

He's right, Obama supported the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt as well, fortunately it had a better outcome, when are you liberals going to learn people don't like having Shiite shoved down their collective throats. Just because the coup failed doesn't mean their so called leader is in the right.

Talking to the liberal brick wall again I see.

Thick skulls & hard heads never learn a thing.

President Erdogan says Turkey uprising is an act of treason, and those responsible will pay a heavy price

Just paints the picture that the coup leaders are the good guy in this.

My feeling is this "coup" is Erdogans way of cementing his power, now he can justifiably clean house in the military and remove opposition.

I just can't believe the Turkish military could be this incompetent.

Much easier to believe a conspiracy like this rather than the 9/11 thread.
