Turkey: Our NATO Ally

My feeling is this "coup" is Erdogans way of cementing his power, now he can justifiably clean house in the military and remove opposition.

I just can't believe the Turkish military could be this incompetent.

Maybe. If it was lower level military officers that staged it, maybe they were set up by those in higher positions. You gotta think that a small group has to know they can't take on everyone.

These situations tend to bring out strong opinions. And the reality is just as the sun rises every morning there will be a defending post from the left no matter what Obama does. My guess is despite Erdogan's Islamic strong views they owe him something for favors done. Not sure why else someone from the West would back this guy.

Erdogan Has Nobody to Blame for the Coup But Himself | Foreign Policy

“I will raise a religious generation,” he declared, turning his back on the secularism that Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish republic, imposed on the country more than 90 years ago. Rather than address the 1,400 percent increase in the murder rate of women, he instructed women to stay at home and have three children, and railed not only against abortions, but also C-sections, as violations of God’s will.

Nobody likes the guy, even us. But since it was out of our hands, the best thing to do was back the winner. I'd rather us have a decent relationship with this guy, than a great relationship with the guys about to be executed.

Back the winner?

At the time, who knew who the winner would be?

I'm with the others that believe something fishy is going on:

Thousands in military detained as Turkey's government reasserts control after failed coup | Fox News

Turkey’s elected government on Saturday rounded up thousands of soldiers, including high-ranking officers, as it moved quickly to reassert control after a failed military coup to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Binaldi Yildirim called the attempted coup a “black stain on Turkish democracy” that left 161 people dead and 1,440 wounded.

He said 2,839 military personnel had been detained as part of a crackdown on coup plotters.

Still, the government pressed ahead Saturday with a purge of judicial officials, with 2,745 judges being dismissed across Turkey for alleged ties to Gulen. Ten members of Turkey's highest administrative court were detained and arrest warrants were issued for 48 administrative court members and 140 members of Turkey's appeals court, state media reported.

So, almost 3,000 personnel have already been detained? That seems like an awfully lot for an incident less than 24 hours in the making.

ETA: As well as 2,700 judges with "ties" to the opposition.

It's his version of a Saddam style witch hunt power grab intimidation tactic...... The message is don't **** with Erdogan or there will be serious consequences and repercussions

This is getting kinda f'd up. I might end up eating my words here.

Just to add a post, apparently he's using veiled threats to get us to extradite his political opponent in the States:

Turkey coup attempt: Situation under control, government says - CNN.com

Erdogan's call for U.S. involvement in punishing his rival comes after Turkish authorities closed the airspace around Turkey's Incirlik Air Base, where his government allows the American military to launch operations in the air campaign against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

Earlier, the U.S. consulate in Adana reported that power to the base had been cut and authorities were preventing movement on and off the site. The consulate warned U.S. citizens to avoid the area.

"This country suffered a lot in the hands of the Gulen Movement," Erdogan told throngs of supporters near his home in Istanbul.

"I call on the United States and President Barack Obama ... (to) either arrest Fethullah Gulen or return him to Turkey," he added. "If we are strategic partners or model partners, do what is necessary."

He's throwing a temper tantrum at the moment. And personally, I'd say eff him in his ear and close the base.

Just more fishy stuff. The helicopter that landed in Greece and the individuals that requested political asylum? Allegedly the plotters:

Turkey coup attempt: Situation under control, government says - CNN.com

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in a tweet requested "the immediate surrender of eight heinous soldiers."

But Greece will not necessarily return the alleged coup plotters, the Greek foreign minister said Saturday in a statement, which contradicted Cavusoglu's earlier claim that the officers would be returned.

Yet according to the Greeks, it had the following:

Thousands in military detained as Turkey's government reasserts control after failed coup | Fox News

The eight were arrested in Greece for entering the country illegaly and were identified as two majors, a captain and five privates by Anadolu Agency, a state-run news organization.

When was the last time a bunch of lower ranking officers as well as a bunch of the lowest rank of enlisted men tried to overthrow a government? At least in a country allegedly as "civilized" as Turkey.

Ain't that something. When Egypt is in the right and the West are in the wrong, then you have to know we're entering very dark times.

So, is anybody ready to re-evaluate our alliances in the ME yet? Anyone ready to question why we are fighting Syria, but backing this Turkish regime?

Sad that Egypt has to block a US sponsored resolution supporting the Turkey government

https://www.yahoo.com/news/egypt-bl...ting-turkish-government-195558980.html?ref=gs

Egypt's relations with the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have been particularly tense.

Erdogan supports the Muslim Brotherhood of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, who was deposed by the Egyptian army in 2013.

The Turkish leader has denounced that move as a "coup d'etat," drawing the wrath of the Egyptian general behind the ouster, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is now president.

Our ally...

Funny how we've wound up killing off or deposing secular (or nominally so) governments while supporting the Muzzies
