'20 TX QB Haynes King (TAMU Commit)

Better performances by JF will make the OC and OL look a whole lot better too. It isn't an either/or but a "both".

You’re right, it’s not an either or. But OL performance has clearly been the worst out of all those units the past few years, and I’m not sure it’s close. Terrible in pass pro, terrible in run blocking. People that know a lot more about the game than I do will tell you that affects everything. Of course getting the ball out quicker would mitigate some, but there’s only so much a QB can do when there are defenders in his face at the snap. Getting the ball out quicker when the OL is as bad as ours has been means just about every passing play is either a slant, curl, or a quick out; cant make a living doing that or DB’s will feast. It’s just unfair to judge a QB when the OL has been as poor as ours has been.

Looking at Aggie boards they don't seem any more or less confident than we do about Haynes. In fact they may have as much competition factor as Tennessee has at QB according to them, not that I have ever bought that theory anyway. I think Haynes and Bailey are both competitors and that is not what is deciding this. I think he loved Tennessee first and still does, the Aggies got the distance factor on their side and they are a good program also. But I think the longer it goes it bodes better for the Vols, of course it could go either way. But I wouldn't be surprised either way at this point. GBO!

Aggies do have a harder road to starting imo, only thing is they’re not taking another QB this class. Chaney saw what we have in our current QBs and thought we needed two which speaks volumes to where we are right now as far as talent. We need both kids.

most drops in the SEC.
Can I have your source? I have seen that and a few other stats thrown around here. Previously, no one has cited a source. It would also be helpful to know what they called a "drop". For some, it has to be a catchable ball... so it is a judgment call like an error in baseball. For others, if it touches the receiver's hands then it is a drop.... even if it would have been a miracle catch.

Here's why I disagree at least to a point. In the season JG split with Dormady, the OL gave up less than 5 sacks with QD then something like 32 once JG took over. He just flat takes too long to make a decision. So I think it is more difficult to know which is which than you do... but am fairly certain both were big issues.

Terrible in pass pro, terrible in run blocking.
The two are sometimes not related. UT has had OL's that were terrible at run blocking and good at pass pro.

[quote People that know a lot more about the game than I do will tell you that affects everything. Of course getting the ball out quicker would mitigate some, but there’s only so much a QB can do when there are defenders in his face at the snap.[/quote] I won't argue that. But that wasn't the case all the time. There is only so much an OL can do when a QB holds the ball too long and doesn't move in the pocket. I went back for some reason and rewatched the UGA game from last year. For most of the game, UT pressured Fromm more than UGA pressured JG.

No more unfair than to judge an OL when a QB has been as poor in pre-snap and post snap reads as JG has been at times.

You don't have to throw short passes all the time. Cutcliffe's "dink and dunk" with Ainge proved that. But it would help if JG could make hot reads and hit those passes to take pressure off the OL and himself.
