What's the difference between the university and a chancellor? Or between a president and a chancellor? Always wondered that.

The UT President oversees the entire UT system and directly reports to the UT Board of Trustees. Each campus is overseen by a Chancellor, who reports to the President. The athletic director is a vice chancellor reporting to chancellor at their campus. It was this way in the 70s and has been ever since.

The jealousy factor will be hard to keep out. The have and the have nots

True, and I don’t think it’s limited to the players either. Many of the staff and folks in the AD, and actually most UT employees don’t make near what some of these reported deals are worth. If I’m a coach on staff making 300k a year and some kid comes in making 500k, I may look at him differently. Not saying I myself would but some people might. Human nature is what it is.

Buck is clearly referring to our lack of a booster network.

Pruitt cheated like an idiot because he realized no one outside of the system was taking care of it.

Also I think Donde is the one. She put on a show to position herself for the NCAA Investigation and inevitable Pruitt lawsuit. Nothing she said in that press conference is relevant to the current NIL environment. She seems sharp enough politically to understand that kicking ass on the football field puts her on solid footing with the alums. We'll see, just my gut.

Tennessee athletics has been on a downhill slide since the AD was removed from under the university and placed under the UTK chancellor. It gives too much control to academics that don't understand how big time college athletics work.
They understand it well, it is just that they micromanage and control the budget and spending. Control and I hate it.

Randy Boyd is the system wide president. Donde is the UTK chancellor. Donde, obviously, works under Boyd. The UT AD used to be under the system wide president and was independent of the chancellor. Meaning that the academic side had no authority over athletics. It changed back in the early 2000's I believe.

Right, but which one's pounds are heavier?

He’s referring to the red tape/barriers our staff is currently working against compared to our competitors free range.

You don’t self sabotage your program to avoid buyouts at this level. Dondo has set a precedent that will continue to make hiring a top level football coach an uphill battle. Hopeful Heupel can build the program and last a while, but until we shed these losers like Plowman we will be 2nd tier football program at best. It takes full alignment across academia and athletics to win these days.

Idk if plowman has been a problem or not but I do know athletics being under academics is never a good thing.

This is the answer. Program started going to **** the moment this happened. UT is not on a level playing field with the SEC heavyweights. SEC heavyweights are committed to football 100%. UT not close to that commitment.

So, what should be the goal of UT athletics now? Because this is not going to change. The changes you are referring to was a result of the image of the rogues in the athletic department in the latter years of the Fulmer era. Not to mention the catastrophe that was Kiffin and his thugs. Athletics were an embarrassment to the university during that time.

Where have you been? All is well, I hope.

Things are going well thanks for asking. I’ve been around but really took take a step back from UT football. As hard as it was to do I just saw no direction from the Univ leadership. I do really like Heupel. He’s just hamstrung by the admin.

I don’t think it will change either. No matter what the reason was for the change it was detrimental to the football program and always will be. The other SEC powers don’t let image or perception effect anything and they certainly don’t allow it to lead to drastic changes. You give the academics too much control you can be sure of two things, they will do all they can to destroy athletics and they will fight to never relinquish that power. Those other schools are all in with their football. UT just flat out isn’t anymore.

Happy to see you back, and I respect your opinion on these types of things but can you elaborate on what that means for the layman fan? What specifically does the admin do (or not do) that has him hamstrung?

This is correct. Joe Johnson had Dickey reporting to him so they could keep the UTAD free from the campus politics and demands.
