Tyler Summitt resigns

Doesn't really matter about consensual, who started what or who stalked whom and what the age of consent is or whether they are both 'adults'. A college takes on a certain level or responsibility for the students that enroll - not quite in loco parentis but fairly close, and that responsibility includes ensuring that their employees are not behaving inappropriately with their students. And most employees of universities sign contracts that specifically proscribe inappropriate behaviors with students. Coaches and teachers specifically are in positions of authority over their students and players that make any relationship between them unbalanced regardless of consent or initiator. It is the same type of situation that is codified in medical ethics relative to doctor/patient relationships - there can be no 'consent' because there is no way of determining if it is given freely or is being coerced.

And it is exactly the same reason that their are laws regarding statutory rape - society has determined that up until a certain age a person is not mature enough so 'consent' is not possible.

You may bridle at the use of the term 'victim' but there is an assumption that someone who attains the level of head coach has a level of maturity whatever his or her age that they will recognize that their position is one that carries the responsibility to act appropriately in this situation and will recognize that 'consent' has no meaning and is no defense for not acting appropriately.

And I agree with others - adultery is a fact of life and it appears that professed religious belief has little effect on whether it occurs or not, only on whether or not one is able to seek forgiveness from an all forgiving god. I don't condemn the huge portion of married people who have committed adultery, but I do condemn those who have whether or not they are married abused positions of responsibility or power to engage in inappropriate relationships with those placed in their care or under their authority.

If you put people of roughly the same age and opposite sex together in the same environment, this is going to happen.

College employees and students are sleeping with each other on every college campus in the country. Please don't act like this is an isolated incident, and for the love of God, please don't say "It doesn't matter if it was consensual" as if it would be no worse if this was rape.

The guy's coaching career is OVER. I can't imagine him even getting an assistant's job for 10 years. This is not something you bounce back from like a recruiting violation. Short of a criminal act, this is arguably the worst thing the coach of a women's team could do. And she's preggers! Oh, my.

Yep. But many around here think he should get a pass because they were close in age and his last name.

Can't wait to hear Mickey tomorrow morning. I'm sure that him and Heather will come up will all sorts of excuses that we haven't even thought of.

A law does not have to be broken for someone to be a victim. A relationship cannot truly be consensual when it is between a person wielding power and his/her subordinate. In the back of her mind, there will always be the thoughts of the consequences and repercussions if she were to say no. Their age differences and genders are not relevant. What is at issue here is that Tyler was in a position of power over the player(s) with whom he had a relationship.

And this is the kind of liberal blather that is ruining this country.

La.Tech was stupid to hire him in the first place. He wasn't qualified to be a head coach--two years as an assistant is not even close to enough experience to take over ANY program, much less a proud one like LaTech. He was, what, 23? Desperate move that backfired. And now Summitt may have ruined his career. Who's going to hire a guy who had an affair with a player? That is a MAJOR no-no--utterly stupid on his part. And it means that all the diehards can forget about this kid coaching at Tennessee, at least for quite a long time.

Some lady named Pat Summitt was only 22 when she became the head coach of the Lady Vols. That must have turned out real bad

Calm down. We don't live in ancient Sumeria.

Thats what happens when you give a 20 something year old kid a job he is not qualified for due to his last name. Some dummies actually wanted him here as our coach. We dodged a bullet.

This...

Unprofessional? Absolutely.
Immoral? Yes
Victim? Ridiculous.

Ridiculous that she is a victim? Do you also think that women that wear skirts and get raped were asking for it????

You don't think the fact that he was an authority figure is a factor? I'll play along here - maybe they are deeply in love and get married and have kids (which is apparently going to happen regardless) and celebrate their 50th anniversary one day. Then we can all look back at this in 2066 and say "I remember when it all started between them."

But right now he is in a position of authority and has control over two things the player wants/needs - scholarship and playing time.

Time will tell how this all plays out, but to sit here today and say it's ridiculous to think the player is not a victim is not cool.

I am far from being a liberal, but Tyler should have known better. As I've said before, he had two things she needed/wanted - a scholarship and playing time. Maybe she played him for both of them, and maybe he is the victim if he got played, but as a person with authority he needed to walk away from it and not put himself in a position to A) get played, or B) play her

This is quite a story and it will be interesting to see if Tyler Summitt's marriage can hold up after this revelation.

If it was a one time thing I could see him being forgiven, but to have your husband cheat on you for over half your marriage with some reports saying it was before they were married, and getting his side chick pregnant too. There's no type of praying or pleading that will help him right now.

There is some suggestion out there on social media that there is more coming.

My mind is blown already so I can't even imagine...

But whatever it is I'm sure most here will find some excuse to rationalize it because of the name associated with it.

If this happened with a UConn coach, just imagine the blood bath...

His mama's connections will take care of him. They will find him a job somewhere as an assistant on a men's team and 5 years from now, this will be forgotten. Remember the Kobe Bryant rape case? money took care of that, he is now a hero..

Nothing can top what's out already unless he was sleeping with two players and both pregnant in some sister wives type shenanigans.

Kobe Bryant's situation was completely different than this for several reasons but most importantly due to the rule changes around Title IX lawsuits the Obama administration has implemented. Tyler Summitt as a staff member is walking liability. All it takes it one women looking for a little cash and a lawyer willing to go there to come up with the stuff that wouldn't stretch the imagination given what has happened.

....spoken like another southern yahoo.

And ignorant of that fact that University's have code of conduct polices that ban professors from having sexual relations with their students and coaches with their athletes.

If the relationship is treated as "consensual," it is not hard for the party with less authority (student or athlete) to after the fact, bring a sexual harassment suit.
