UF recruiting Woes

You gators need to stop making excuses for CJM. This is bad. You guys keep saying that this poor recruiting is expected because he hasn't had enough time given he was just hired. Well let's compare to CBJ:

UF hired CJM on December 4, 2014.

UT hired Butch Jones on December 7, 2012.

Butch had less time to put together the 2013 class for TN than CJM has to put together the 2015 class for UF. Butch was able to get enough recruits to come to TN and closed with the 21st best class in the country by signing day in 2013.

Let's see how CJM does since he has had even more time at UF. Right now, with less than a week left he sits at 99. This is at UF, where blue chip recruits are all over your own state. Unless CJM closes very strong, this is a huge red flag.

UF should just cancel the 2015 and 2016 seasons, based on that info alone.

Clearly McElwain doesn't have what it takes to recruit or succeed in the SEC.

Just saying that if I were a UF fan knowing all the built in advantages UF has, and this was where we sat in recruiting this close to NSD I would be worried he would have a hard time recruiting at an elite level consistently going forward (i.e. consistent top 5 classes like UF of old). This seems to be a red flag.

Also, what is up with this guy's sayings? He seems a little weird, right? Don't you guys agree this guys demeanor in this video wreaks of Dooley? Do you think this stuff sells recruits?

I am glad TN moved on from the weird Saban underling coaches.

You guys are obsessed with applying Dooley to anything and everything "negative" about our coaching situation.

It's comical....if you truly think McElwain and Dooley are on the same planet as CFB head coaches, then we're WAY past the point of meaningful dialogue.

Should be no excuses this yr for not beating UF since CBJ is the man. 😄

They thought Muschamp was Dooley.

:p OK, true Dooley does get blamed for everything around here. Of course, CJM will not be Dooley - no one can be that bad. CJM actually has some great x&o skills and I don't think anyone denies that.

But from a personality stand point, just seems like an odd fit for you guys. And his demeanor doesn't strike me as lacking the sizzle needed to go in and scoop up dozens of top recruits year in and year out as UF traditionally does. Just wanted to see your take on it (beyond just insults toward me :)).

No concern what so ever about his recruiting skills?

McElwain has a goofy swagger about him. His personality is unlike Muschamp (lunatic), Meyer (aloof and arrogant), Zook (also a lunatic) and Spurrier (likeably arrogant). It's too early to pinpoint his style.

As for his ability to recruit, if a year from now we're struggling to put together a Top 10-15 class, then I'll be concerned.

If the man can't recruit, he won't win, and if he doesn't win he won't stick around very long...it's just that simple.

What good does it do to worry about a question we won't definitively know the answer to until a year from now?

God I hope not.

Good news is I can always ask how you've coped with it so well since 2008....to get me through and whatnot.

lol.

We have no hat to hang right now regarding wins but for now McElwain is giving us a nice boost to close any remaining recruiting gaps. Hell we need it.

You know by now all we do is worry here on VN! But I guess maybe you guys don't have experience having a hard time recruiting. It sucks. That is why VN is obsessed with it. At TN our coach must be outstanding as a recruiter for us to compete against our rivals.

When is the last time UF had a bad recruiting class (i.e. outside the top 20) like this?

As for the 2016 class I would think if he doesn't have UF in or near the top 5 that is a red flag also. No excuse for UF not to be at or near the top of recruiting year in and year out given the built in advantages. Just think how CBJ would kill it if he was at UF??

See, that's the other thing...I'm not exactly in awe or in fear of Butch Jones.

He's improving the talent level for sure, and he's recruiting very well...but is he a championship coach?

Jury's still out on that, just as it is on McElwain coaching and succeeding in a big boy football conference.

By December 2016 we'll have all the answers to these burning questions.
