UNC and Duke Basketball, 2015-16

Thank you.

And congratulations in advance on your next two or three straight ACC titles starting next season. We'll see you again at the top in a few years after we recover from our recent ****sville recruiting era.

I think you're right about the ACC next year for Duke. However, I think we'll be discussing Duke Coach Jeff Capel and if he will be successful in 2 or 3 years. I am absolutely sold that he will be the next head coach at Duke.

I'm not going with the doom and gloom angle for UNC just yet. This season is definitely their best chance of the past few seasons, and probably the next couple, to win it all. I don't think we'll lose anyone other than the seniors and next year's class coming in may not be Giles and Tatum, but they aren't slouches either. Outside shooting will probably be a problem. Again. Dominating the glass and playing defense will have to be their calling cards. And who knows? Seventh Woods may turn out to be Allen Iverson 2.0

The good news for Carolina is that no team is invincible. The Kentuckys, Duke and (maybe?) Wisconsin of last year isn't here this year. Every team has glaring issues. I would rather be able to rebound and play down low than hit "the great equalizer". This might be Roy's last real chance

I agree with you that guys who can do both (your LeBron James' wing types) are the most valuable. There's no denying that. However, given that most players will never be able to master both, you have the options of either choosing one over the other or striking a balance between the two. I don't claim to come with great knowledge of this, but it seems to me that we are increasingly living in an era wherein guys who can get you 10 rebs plus a game, with a few points sprinkled in, are a dime-a-dozen, whereas guys who can get you 4-5 plus threes a game (consistently) are more precious commodities.

Believe me, I don't like having to be the guy who constantly talks about three pointers, but I just feel like it's a fact of the game that we have only begun to prop. It took baseball over a century to figure out analytics; the three point shot in basketball is only roughly 30 years old now. For the majority of those 30 years it has mostly just been a novelty, but I think that is now changing. And programs like Duke and franchises like Golden State are leading the way.

Statistically, you're right. Any big guy can come in and get 10 rebounds per game in a featured role, and there are fewer guys that can shoot. It doesn't even have to be 3s; spacing in general helps the rest of your offense, and it's why Bosh was more important to the Heat than people realize.

I just think that shooter is only valuable if you can still have a great defense. Golden State is one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. I also don't think basketball will go full Moneyball, because there are so many guys with empty stats and the best players can't be replaced in the aggregate like Giambi was.

Apparently Grayson Allen lost ACC's Most Improved Player to Clemson's Jaron Blossomgame. No matter who you root for, that's unbelievable. How can you not give most improved player to the guy who had the highest point increase in the league's history?

Do journalists or the league vote on this? I have to admit I'm uncertain. Either way, one wonders if Mr. Allen's sterling personality was what didn't endear him with voters, as you are right: he was the most improved player, statistically and in every other way. You can only trip and curse your way to so many lasting relationships.

I really enjoyed Roy's self depricating post game comments last night. Talking about how many obstacles they've overcome this season and how hard it's been.
NEWS FLASH HUCKLEBERRY: you were supposed to win. You were preseason #1. You have the most depth and talent by far. Any obstacles that took place were a direct result of poor in game decisions, lack of leadership and player development.

You could be right, this could be what the ACC's "reprimand" was - prohibiting him from any postseason awards.

You could be right. Makes you wonder how the largest fraud in academic history has gone unpunished. Very curious about that.

I'll admit I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I've read this post several times now and still don't get it, even as an obvious intended joke. Are you just trying to say that UNC committed academic fraud, which is a worse offense than having a player who is so clearly an ******* to everyone but Duke fans apparently? In that case, I certainly agree with you, on both matters.

Now that the team doctor is implicated in the LD/ADHD prong, things are going to get really, really messy in Chapel Hill.

Whatever you guys did to piss off the N.C. State fanbase.... you made a terrible mistake. Now you're paying the price.

Good to see Roy got dressed in the dark again today.

Out of all the grievances I have against Roy, his sense of fashion is actually not one. It's a nice change of pace from the countless JC Penney's cookie cutter coaches. Plus, it gives us something to discuss, however briefly, on VolNation.

What more could you ask for?

Haha I agree Roy usually does dress pretty well. However, he does have those games where it looks like Helen Keller picked out his sport coat. Unfortunately, I believe she also picks out our beloved Butch Jones attire from time to time.

Brey can coach

Someone tell Grayson about that Ingram fella

Notre Dame has Duke's #. I hate Notre Dame, but I love coach Brey. He was my coach at Duke camp several years when I went. Super nice guy and great coach.

Notre Dame also has UNC's number. Granted, UNC should have beaten them earlier this year, but Notre Dame just seems to find a way. It was a lot like the game against Duke today.

This Duke team has been one of my favorite bc of their heart and toughness, but man, one thing that frustrates me about this team is their lack of a killer instinct. So many times this season Duke has been built big second half leads only to squander them away. If they had that instinct then I would think they could actually make a run in the tournament, but the way it looks now a trip to the Sweet 16 for this team would be overachieving.

As for Brey, he should get more talk as the successor to K. As much as I hate to see Notre Dame constantly squeeze out wins against us, I love to watch his teams plays. Always efficient on offense and gritty on defense.

Agreed. After K, Brey is by far the best coach in the Duke family IMO, and guys like Amaker and freaking Johnny Dawkins get more mentions as the successor.

I agree. ND is the worst matchup in the ACC for UNC, IMO. I was really hoping for another matchup with Duke. With head coaching being heavily in their favor, I want as many matchups with them as possible when we have more talent!

Just get used to the idea that Jeff Capel is Duke's next head coach. That's the deal. It is what it is.

Does Griffin get to come back to college? Capel was mediocre to terrible without him. The VCU tenure proved to be much less impressive after what Grant and Smart accomplished there. You can name anyone you want and you choose Capel?

I don't think you understand it. Duke won't name anyone the fans want. I still think there's a chance Hurley gets looked at if he can turn around ASU, but Capel is the odds on favorite. Like imagine the odds of a Sixers-Warriors game and Capel is the Warriors.
