Uniform changes for 2013

Yes. That's what athletes do- they give up stuff (like their knees, e.g.) for money.

which is completely different since there is not a choice to be made besides to play the game or not. The choice of clothing/equipment to wear is entirely on the player. EB wore it for 3 yrs at UT and decided it was at an NFL level.

someone needs to tell Eric Berry he wears inferior equipment. Imagine how much better he could be in Nike

Yes I know he wears Adidas. He also receives a HUGE check for doing so. I would say aside from the money, much of that has to do with the fact that he wore Adidas in college and he was merely sticking with what he was used to.

I'm willing to bet if you polled the team and asked them which footwear they would prefer, Nike or Adidas, your overhelming winner would be Nike. It's not just the fans that want to see UT back with Nike. I guarantee you the players feel the same way. Don't you think the player's opinions on what gear they use is most important since, you know, they're the ones actually having to use it?

Understand, I'm not pro-adidas/anti-Nike. I'm just recognizing adidas' efforts to make themselves visible, even in Nike's backyard. I just think it's funny. Nothing more, nothing less.

I hear ya... I just think it's more beneficial to them to leave well enough alone.

why do we need a poll when you said you know Nike is clearly superior? Present your findings and get it changed or quit falling for the marketing. Also have a plan to justify the drop to a 2nd tier level with Nike

why would what the fans want matter? You can get fan gear in whatever brand you want

I didn't say I knew it. I said that's what I heard and been hearing for years. I've heard with my own ears former players talk about it. I've heard reports that current players talk about it. It's not a big secret.

The point I'm making is that if the players clearly want another brand (and they do) and feel like they would perform better while wearing said brand, why would our university ignore that just because Adidas treats us better? That's like eating at a restaurant with lousy food just because the service is great.

Yeah, well we clearly disagree on this point, and that likely won't change! So I'll elaborate just a bit...

... I came up during the late 80's and early 90's as a fan. Went through conference expansion and realignment, etc. My friends and I tend to have a foot in both camps as it were with regards to tradition and change.

For example, we still consider Alabama our primary rival- unlike younger fans who feel this way about Florida. But pragmatically, we also realize the important place Florida now has and we regard them a major rival.

Another example is with uniforms. We love the tradition and want to keep it a part of our brand without negotiation. But we also acknowledge the game changes and we need to develop our tradition. We feel this is really in line with Neyland's military influence and how he installed many changes that were strategic. And we feel that- for better or worse- if kids are wearing gear they like, they'll play with more confidence.

And it sounds like you're around the same age as me.

I'm not a prude, I don't mind mixing up changes, but I think there's a fine line between mixing it up and overkill. I think Oregon is the definition of overkill. Their "tradition" now is basically no real set tradition; they change uniforms like underwear. I honestly think most of their stuff is ugly.

I also think their strategy is completely overrated and overstated. I can't think of any other place where the approach to uniforms they've had has had anywhere close the effect it has at Oregon. In short, I think Oregon is clearly the exception, not the rule. Plenty of other places have tried throwing a ton of uniforms out there and not really had that much success.

The most successful programs still have 99% of the time a standard classic look, so obviously their players feel comfortable enough. Yes I know even traditional places are doing throwbacks and alternates, which again I'm fine with, but none of them have gone full Oregon.

We would get a very good contract from Nike.

How much of that "poll" would be because they think Nike is better, not because they actually know if it is or not?

And I find it funny you guys say EB uses it just because he's paid a lot, but you're absolutely sure players "know" Nike is better. Yeah there's no way they would only pick Nike just because it's the "cool" thing.

I remember when I was young I would get a new pair of shoes and was positive they made me faster. It was an absolute certainty in my mind. Was it true?

Elite players like EB choose to wear Adidas. If what you're saying is true then they sacrifice performance on the field for a little extra money. For someone whose whole life has been about being the absolute best there is that makes very little sense.

what a few players want makes little difference when you're talking about a contract for the entire AD. I will never understand why people want to switch from a brand that values UT (and treats us like it) to one that makes it clear they are 2nd tier.

We would get a very good contract from Nike.

do some research on past offers. It's not close and it's because they do not value our brand as highly as Adidas

Uniforms certainly aren't a major factor for an athlete choosing a school. BUT they are a factor. And, as CBJ says, everything is like 4th and 1 for the championship.

Oregon is the exception that proves the rule. How many athletes around the country had Oregon on their radar 15-20 years ago?

1) Proof they do?

2) How many times does this need to be addressed?

And again, you're really stretching it with your comparisons that Adidas is so much worse in quality than Nike. It's almost like you work for Nike.

So how come Oregon is the only one where it's worked out? I haven't seen one other school that's had even close to the success Oregon has. And Oregon has been pretty good over a decade now, this success hasn't been overnight. It's not like they flashed out uniforms 3 years ago and suddenly they are top dog.

Yea, it couldn't be that Oregon has won the PAC-12 3 times the past few years and played in the NC game a couple years back.

Again, it's not the only factor. But other schools are definitely benefitting- two come to mind immediately: VT and TCU.

Now, one might say that these chumps had to do something since they have no tradition, etc. Well, I say they're showing that they can compete and will do whatever it takes to win.

I'd imagine that the checkerboard on the road jersey number will be like the rose background that Wisconsin had on their numbers in the Rose Bowl either this or last year. It was not visible really at all on television.

I'd image that they grey will be the same shade as much of the apparel that adidas has been selling in the bookstores the last couple of seasons.

I hope the Tennessee script is nothing like what adidas did with Kansas in the past.
