I will be the first to admit that in 2009 I really liked the black jerseys. So much so, that I actually bought a jersey replica T-Shirt with the number 14 on it.
Now I cringe when I pull it out. Not because of some connection with Kiff, but because it is just ugly. Personally I think I was just in the whole "change for the sake of change is good" category then. I felt like we had suffered through a decade or more of decline and we felt stale. If I only knew what the next four years would hold...
The problem with chasing fashion and trends is that too often when a change is made you end up being behind the curve. Assuming you believe that kids are flocking to schools because of their uniform (a debatable assumption when looking at recruiting averages across the teams with "trendy" uniforms and compared to teams like UT with pretty traditional garb) you have to also assume that black is now "out". We did it 4 years ago and were on the tail end of that fad.
You also have to assume that some colors look better with black. White and red are two colors that tend to really pop with black. Orange and black looks like Halloween, and blue and black looks like a bruise.
So, if we want to have the effect on modern players to energize them (that is what these alt uniforms supposedly do, right?) we have to have something that is enviable and fresh. Wearing black now would feel like wearing bell-bottoms in the late 1980's; you might have on what was incredibly trendy a few years ago, but now you just look silly and out of touch.
It is a precarious balancing point. Do what Maryland did and the majority will find it repulsive and desperate, or do what USC, Bama and UT do and stick to your brand. I promise, kids don't mind that Bama looks almost the same as they did in 1960. When we start winning, our traditional and UNIQUE look will be cool again too.
As far as this desperate need to put checkerboards in and on everything, personally I find it repulsive. I love it in the end zones because it is traditional and unique, but it ends up looking like a cheap picnic tablecloth when thrown on a jersey or a helmet.
