Uniform/Helmet/Shoe design thread (merged)

So we've got minor tweaks to the home uniform, a complete overhaul of the away uniform and alternates for TWO games? I've said a lot of negative stuff about Derek Dooley, but I'll give him credit in this regard; at least he was dedicated to upholding UT's unique brand, (at least from an aesthetic standpoint) something that Jones flat out doesn't appear interested in doing.

Yes, and the argument gets down to those who don't mind the subtle, small changes and those who want big, flashy changes.

The ones who want the Oregon style changes point to the small changes and say 'Hey we have changed, so it's not a big deal"; while the "traditionalists" look at the same thing and say "Yes but the overall look has been basically the same for a long time".

I'm not saying you are doing that, but I'm seeing a lot of those wanting a major overhaul citing the small changes as proof that we should.

Believe me I'm not I love the little changes. I loved when they put the fat T on the collar. I think Tennessee across the chest on only the away is a good little change, but what I'm saying is to act like they haven't changed is stupid cause they obviously have. The away uniforms with the orange shoulder are not the same as the stripes on the shoulder in the Johnny majors days or the same as the ones we had last year, they have changed.

And I would be completely pissed if they pulled a Oregon but they aren't doing that at all.

I think this will be a huge recruiting tool as well. I love UT and I understand the tradition part, but young guys really like the new style these days like Oregon etc. You want to keep tradition here without a doubt, but we have to reenergize this program every way possible right now. Butch is going to brand UT into something special and that's what UT needs. You don't open a store that was previously shut down due to bad business and reopen it with the same name, same logo, same food, etc. Sometimes it takes change to allow yourself to get to a point that you can slowly get to where you want to be. If we have to change it up to be more attractive to players around the country then I say do it. If UT Grad Grandpa Joe doesn't like it because the uniforms aren't the same as that have been for 50 years pretty much, then tell Grandpa to turn in his VFL card because he's not one. A true fan wants what's best for this program no matter what, and what's best is for us to rebrand UT into something attractive to young adults. We must erase the image UT has portrayed the last five years, and this change is exactly what we need. CBJ is very smart for doing this.

Which version should we never ever change?

I know it would never happen but it would be cool to use one of our retired styles each week all the way back to the black with orange stripes changing each week.just for one year. Like some anniversary year or something.

It's about time we got flashy and splashy!!!! Coming back from the bottom of the heap is never easy.. might as well work our way up in style and be noticed!!!!!!!!
We can be more intimidating on our journey, why the heck not? grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

GO VOLS..
GO BIG ORANGE ..

Flashy and splashy? It is hard to find a single color in all of college football that is bolder, prettier or more distinctly recognizable than Tennessee orange. I believe that Butch is using the forthcoming modifications as yet another strategic and motivational tool, a visual reminder to his players of whom they represent and who they play for. I am a traditionalist to the bone when it comes to our uniforms, so I will reserve judgment on the new jerseys until I have seen them. My gut tells me that Butch respects Tennessee tradition too much to willingly embrace radical change on that front, but subtle stylistic change is entirely in accordance with Tennessee tradition.

These changes are nothing like what Oregon has done. And Oregon continues to be the only school with this tactic that actually has had success. For every Oregon, there's about 5 Marylands.

Just use the jerseys we have worn since we have had color televisions in homes I guess.....

Change is coming regardless. A patch of the state and a script of Tennessee and people are having coronaries. Lord forbid we ever get a black president. BOOM!

I don't understand why everyone gets put into either "for" or "against".

I'm fine with an alternate, throwback, tweaks, etc., but I also think the overall look should be distinctly UT. And like it or not, the distinct look is generally the same thing we've been wearing about 50-60 years. I think we all can figure out what that means, it's the same reason you turn it on and know it's Alabama playing, it's Ohio St. it's Texas, etc.

Those programs have done alternates and such, but all of them have kept a primary distinct look. None of them have gone Oregon.

Pretty much my sentiment.

Everything will hopefully be in this week to have an unveiling in the next week or two.

VQ posted a description of some of the changes to the regular uniforms after Butch showed them to recruits over the weekend.

Putting the state of Tennessee above the player names is something that's been needed for awhile. There will be a pattern in the road numbers, but it won't be noticeable except up close, much like the pattern on the shoulders of last year's basketball jersey.

Look for something light gray at Oregon and an alternate orange with a subtle pattern for a home game later in the season.

You may have answered this already, but how could we wear gray at Oregon? Is it one of those situations where Oregon had to agree to it or something?

We have one of the most recognizable uniforms in all of sports. It's classic, sharp and instantly recognized.
I see no reason in making design changes to the uniform.

It had to be changed from previous recognized design in order to become the current recognized design so that the current design cold be tweaked in order to become a more contemporary recognizable design. OK?

#7, my all time favorite. 2nd fav are the 2002 roadies white w thick orange stripe down side of jersey going well the way down pant with bk trim around orange. Disappointing team, beautiful units IMO.
