Uniform/Helmet/Shoe design thread (merged)

As I've said before, during the design process the one thing adidas was told could not be altered was the helmet.

It's not impossible, but I would say it's very unlikely.
Since when would Adidas be responsible for helmet design when they don't make helmets? I'm sure they could, but there is a place in CA that does a lot of the custom helmets and they help design them, too. So, it's more likely that the staff would contact a company like this and ask them to present a few different concepts...not Adidas.

False. Part of our contract with adidas (Nike schools have the same contract wording) states that they are responsible for the design of all on-field uniform elements for all of our sports, including helmets.

HydroGraphics (HGI) is the company you're referring to. They typically work with both the school and the apparel company to execute a helmet design to compliment a standard or alternate uniform. adidas has worked with them on many occasions, including the Notre Dame "Under the Lights" uniforms/helmets each of the last three years.

That may be the case, but it seems that Nike is much more involved and Adidas is not. I can't recall any Helmet designs by Adidas. Maybe they discourage it, because it could be VERY expensive...especially if it's a one game proposition.

Like I just said in the post you quoted, adidas and HGI designed the Notre Dame "Under the Lights" helmets each of the last three years.

adidas was responsible for designing the alternate helmets that went with the throwback uniforms for Nebraska and Wisconsin last season. They designed the new lids Mississippi State wore just this weekend. Northern Illinois' alternate in the Orange Bowl, the UCLA navy helmet last year. adidas designed all of those, HGI delivered the paint job.

DP, will it be announced which game the smokey uniform will be debuted? Would love to know so I can get tickets ahead of time. Missed out on the black jerseys, don't want to miss this one!

Wow...who would have thought there was any "designing" going on, there? Rough texture under half of the Golden dome? Man, that's so out there. And switching up the base color of the helmet for UCLA...whoa man, that's so gawdy, it's insane :p Must have taken months of "design" work to pull that off. :)

DeerPark,
Thanjks for coming on here and taking out the trash. Too bad we have so much of it on this topic. One reason that UT should not have any kind of an alternate uniform is evidenced by what is going on. No one is ever satisfied with any of the changes. I hope UT learns something from this.

While I do think it has some effect on recruiting it is not a major factor like everyone think it is. We had a great recruiting class before the announced smokey addition.

WTF are you talking about? Because others have different opinions than yours, then they are by default....trash? GTFOH.

As it applies to Adidas and helmets, I stated that it was certainly possible that they do some work on helmets, but I haven't seen any work they've done with teams that Adidas has a contract with. Conversely, you look at Nike supplied teams and most have some helmet work done.

The "design" work DP stated isn't any real design work....just some modest changes, just like the jerseys. You, like DP, just want to piss all over any suggested changes. That....is trash. You have had decades and decades of "tradition." There comes a time when a new tradition begins. Old School is a design decision all on it's own.

A decision to go with a plain, out-dated appearance. Even stripes on a helmet and pants was once a new fad....trying to apply some graphics to solid colored objects. Graphics have drastically evolved and old farts just need to get over it.

I don't see a dramatic difference between the alternate helmets designed by Nike and those designed by adidas. Your argument of just switching a base layer or adding a sticker could apply to their designs as well.

I don't come here to "piss on" suggested changes. I'm not opposed to an occasional change. But I'm not going to lie to you and say they are given serious consideration, because they aren't.

People ask me to confirm or deny if something is changing, and I tell what I know. I don't see that as "pissing on" your suggestions.

I don't get back to Nashville often, where's the best selection for Vol gear in town? I went to Sports Seasons on White Bridge Rd...let's just say the selection was not good.

Thanks!!!

This is probably your best bet in Nashville (The Tennessee Sports Fan) and their product line also is less than desirable. They started out as specialists in Tennessee paraphernalia and it seems that, with each passing year, their UT gear becomes a less significant part of their overall product line. Anyways, they are located in Opry Mills. For telephone no., address and hours of operation, see this page (The Tennessee Sports Fan).

rather than starting a new thread I thought I would ask here...
Do any of you know where one could buy the socks that the players wear?
I have seen other fans this year at Neyland wearing them, but, I can not find them online or anywhere here in Nashville.

The bookstore sells them, not sure if they're on the website.
