United States, Cuba to normalize relations

what benefit are the Cuban people going to get out of the arrangement? Unless the leadership in Havana recognizes individual property rights and embraces capitalism, life for the average Cuban isn't going to change.

They get the internet so they can read VN.:)

And further isolation would solve this?

Nothing is going to change for the average Cuban while it is run by a communist regime.

And don't trot out China as an example. China has embraced capitalism and private property rights and it's middle class has nearly as many people in it as the entire US population.

I don't understand how it won't get better. Even if we didn't trade with them, it still opens up communication. A more informed Cuban populace becomes harder to oppress. Cuba might not respect property rights like we do, but as the general standard of living goes up, as it most certainly will, the people will be harder to oppress.

Americans are going to start showing up and tipping bell hops $20 for 10 minutes of work. I don't understand why people think nothing will change for the poor.

So what you're saying is, doing business with them isn't a bad thing because they're not going to change either way.

Hey look, we agree!

Oh. Well, that guy is probably driving a cab because of his masters in economics and years of experience in the hospitality business.

His cab will probably be allergic to American tourist dollars.

Lifting the Embargo means more trade and tourism. That should help the lower class in Cuba with more jobs and also more availability of basics.

My former church had a relationship with a small rural church in Cuba. We sent people once a year to show our support for their church. Everything I heard from people that went down there was that they were spiritual very strong but desperately poor. We snuck in basics, like over the counter medicines, bandages, canned food items, etc. because they couldn't get them for any reasonable price.

I understand why they're pissed. And I don't like for one second how this came about but in the long run it will be good.

I think so too. I find it somewhat amusing that some want to keep these sanctions in place even though it would be quite obvious to a casual observer that their intended targets are not feeling any pain. I guess if we leave them in place for 55 years they might have.... :clapping: I just object to The One doing this solo.

It will change eventually. Believe it or not, the Castros will die.... and probably sooner than later. The masses there will get better access to information and see what they have been missing. It might take another revolution on their part... but things will change.
