UPDATED Tim Banks a potential candidate for Miami and Clemson DC

What elements are air raid? I will wait…
The tempo, the wide splits and spread formations, the simple pass concepts like screens and verticals, and the overall system reliance on the qbs ability to make quick reads and adjust are all elements of the air raid

We, CJH, runs a veer and shoot offense. Powerfull down hill running and RPOs with deep passes being essential for chunk plays. Period.

All good systems steal ideas from others. I don’t claim to be an expert, and I doubt you are either but our passing concepts are pretty damn close to what I saw Leach and his other disciples running.

Specifically option routes and wide spreads.

I am sure you also know that Broiles worked for Leach at tx tech, so he was also influenced by him.

Those are in know Mike Leach elements. Art Briles worked under Leach very briefly, but continued to run his own system after

Wide splits is not an air raid element. Neither Mumme nor Leach had wide splits.

Our formations aren’t spread. We have at least 1 if not 2 TEs in the game (really more so fullbacks) at all times.

Everyone runs screens and verticals. Our system doesn’t rely on quick reads the way air raid/west coast offenses do. Our offense is much more vertical and has less of a quick timing based element

Why would you think the Vols job is MUCH better than a Miami job? There is no comparison between Knoxville and Miami. Coaching for Cristobal is almost a sure fire path to a Head Coaching position. Miami would probably pay more too. If they make an offer, Banks would be crazy not to take it.
If he has to go to Miami to get a HC job, he’s not viewed highly as this would be the 3rd lateral move and no upgrade Miami isn’t Alabama under Saban who rehabbed coaching careers.

I don't know if it's already been said here, but objectively speaking, if I'm Banks and I know a lot of the DLineman who was the biggest reason why our defense did well this year are gone, I'd probably bolt as well.
Yes - he likely will be viewed at the end of next year as he was prior to this year . . . As a very average DC. The reason being loss of Dline depth. I think he is a decent DC . . . But not a great one. I’m not sure what level of recruiter he is.

Also, next year will be what . . . Year 5 for him? The argument that one “needs time” goes out the window. If he goes to Clemson the clock may restart somewhat in that sense??

We are a much better program than Miami. Also play in a better conference.

So what’s your definition of great? OSU and TX have great DL play. Does that mean their DCs aren’t that good? Who says Banks needs time? He has brought us from 90th in total defense to 8th nationally. What more do you want? I am beginning to think some of you just started watching football a few years ago.

Your not veey familar with the air raid and your just looking to argue

Banks has earned some more time. Yes, his Defense didn’t travel in three big games this year (gave up a gaming winning drive to a backup Arkansas QB, cut to pieces by Georgi and Ohio State), but overall the D won us couple of games too.

I’d like to see more creativity and better in-game adjustments though.

I’ve met Hal Mumme, his son Matt, Lincoln Riley, and numerous other prominent air raid coaches. I’ve coached the air raid. I know the air raid extremely well.

We aren’t an air raid team. You can insult me and pretend idk what I’m talking about all you wish. It doesn’t change anything.

We are not an air raid team. We don’t run mesh. We don’t run shallow cross. We almost never throw to our RB. We almost never go 10 personnel.

Here’s some base air raid plays for you:

1. Stick (I don’t think I’ve ever seen us run it)
2. Mesh (maybe on the goal once all season, if that)
3. Y sail (very common in most play books, maybe once all season on a roll out)
4. Y cross (don’t think I’ve ever seen us run that)
5. 4 verts (everyone in America runs this, but we don’t often because we rarely align with 4 vertical threats)
6. Y Corner (I call Z stick, but also not a play we run).
7. Shallow cross (I can’t recall a single time we’ve ran this)

What we do run frequently are run n shoot concepts

1. X choice
2. Y go
3. Switch

Our defense lost a couple of games for us last year, Georgia and Arkansas. Those loses were because of poor LB and Safety plays. The Pili was injured, we los all containment in the middle of the field and our slow safety could not cover good WRs when they took the safeties deep in the middle of the filed. Safety play should be better as well as LB play. However, a lot of coaching will be needed in the Spring and Fall to get better but less experienced, players ready for the SEC Fall schedule. Anything we pick up from the portal is icing on the cake.

I do not blame the defense in 2 of those 3. I blame an offense who craps the bed on Saturday nights on the road.

You can’t attack without speed at safety.
This is simply not true. Pressure on the quarterback is the only answer to weak dbs. You have to generate pressure however you can, or any decent qb will pick you apart, as evinced by the Georgia and Ohio State games. Especially when you're terrible at zone coverage, which we are.

Banks was way more aggressive in previous seasons, but apparently decided this year we could generate enough pressure with four despite evidence to the contrary. And, as others have pointed out, when we did blitz, it was almost always straight-line.
