"On rare occasions over the last seven years there were several private reprimands and that took care of the matter," Slive told the AP in a telephone interview. "On occasion there were public reprimands and that took care of it. It became clear to me after last week that I was no longer interested in reprimands and the conference athletic directors and university presidents unanimously agreed.
"For the foreseeable future there will be no reprimands," Slive added. "We will go right to suspensions and fines."
Kiffin definitely played a major role in getting the rules toughened
then meyer walks into the bear trap slive tried to set for kiffin
love it
Totally agree! You know when Slive drew up the new rule, he had ONE COACH in mind, Lane Kiffin. Slive was finally going to shut the young punk up. And now the beautiful irony: The Coach who can't keep his mouth shut (CLK) actually keeps his mouth shut as reports try to goad him into a controversial comment. And then Mikey Slive's Golden Boy Meyer steps right into the trap that Slive had set for Kiffin.
The other fascinating angle is that whatever the punishment ultimately is, Meyer will probably always blame Kiffin for causing the rule to be promulgated in the first place.
I don't think Spurier in even his best days was quite as adept at getting into opponents heads as Kiffin is.
Slive backing himself into a corner is great stuff. No way this d-bag stays our commish for too much longer. You should never hear more about the commissioner of a conference than the actual teams in the conference. Serves him right. Take your power trip somewhere else Slive,
But it also says for the foreseeable future. Clearly, Slive did not foresee Meyer complaining in the future, therefore no suspension.
So the richest TV deal ever for a BCS conference, a deal the guarantees even Vandy getting more revenue than Notre Dame gets from NBC isn't good enough?Negotiating a contract with espn for big money wasn't due to slive's genius. That was a slam dunk--in fact, the SEC should have gotten a better deal than they did. Slive gave away a lot of cash.
Slive is responsible for that recently signed TV megadeal with ESPN. He's set us all up financially better than any other conference out there.
This crap with reprimands and incompetent officials is small potatoes compared with the coin each of the twelve member institutions will get over the next 15 years.
You can thank Slive for that.
Pretending that Slive is THE reason the contract exists is silly. The rise of the AEC and fall of the Big 10 had fat more to do with it. Slive just happened to be at the helm when ESPN came bidding. So the richest TV deal ever for a BCS conference, a deal the guarantees even Vandy getting more revenue than Notre Dame gets from NBC isn't good enough?
Nevermind CBS is paying us too for broadcast rights...

Leveraged the product? This is an industry littered with consultants and attorneys. Those guys did the work. Slive sat in his office and said we'll take the money. The product and ratings history drove the pricing, period.Slive should get credit for leveraging the product on the field into the most lucrative TV deal in college football history.
I'm sure he did more than answer ESPN's call and say "okay we will take your money now".
