Urban Meyer Out at Florida (merged)

I'll both introduce myself here, and respond to the thread.

I am a Bama fan. My "second" team is the Volunteers.

Oil and water, you might say, and I would agree.

I am alum to neither school, but I can't make myself cheer the Blazers :) . I'm a Bama fan due to proximity and exposure - My Dad was an Alabama state trooper and I was exposed to Bama football, and Bear Bryant early on, with VERY good seats. Yeah I'm an older guy haha.

I was also exposed to Tennessee football early on, having a fan in the family & I went to a few games.

I'm also a long time lurker to this forum. I think it's the best football forum around. Period.

But damn guys - you think Urban Meyer is stepping down, not from Florida but from coaching, because of Lane Kiffin? Because of Acid Reflux? Something is not being told. I hope he's O.K.

I am not one to piss off a squirrel, but there are a few posters on this board that are taking Meyers health issue a little too far. I'm lactose intolerant, have hemorrhoids, sunlight burns my skin, and have a phobia towards wooden stakes, but no one seems too concerned about me :cray:
Aren't you immortal?

Report: Meyer had in-season heart attack
Posted by John Taylor on December 26, 2009 8:39 PM ET
While the news that Urban Meyer was stepping down was shocking in and of itself, at least one of the details that's beginning to trickle out does not do justice to the word "stunning".

According to a report from WKMG-TV in Orlando, Meyer had suffered a heart attack this year. During the football season.

Citing an unnamed source, sports director Dave Pingalore reported that Meyer did not inform anyone that he'd suffered a heart attack. Again, Pingalore reports that Meyer suffered a heart attack during the football season and didn't inform anyone.

Nor did he miss a single game or, as far as we're aware, a single practice.

As the Grand PFT Poobah is wont to say, wow.

If this report is indeed true, that Meyer failed to inform anyone that he was having issues with his heart, then it was certainly time for Meyer to take a step back and step away from the game.

Football is a helluva game, the best sport going, but it's certainly not worth risking your health -- or life -- over.

hard to believe a big public figure like that could have a heart attack..miss no games or practices and no one hear about it?? no way

Doubt it. He's been hospitalized 3 times with chest pains since the SECCG per ESPN and has been found to have a heart muscle defect.

I was aware he was hospitalized after the SECCG, but was unaware he had been back twice more. Thanks for the info, that clears up any "conspiracy theory" in my book. Not that it matters.

it would have had to have been an extremely minor one.

i've heard stories of people complaining of chest pains and such but they still get around OK and go about their activities as they always would but go to the doctor to get it checked out and they find that at some point they actually did have a heart attack.

My hunch is these health reasons were ignored longer than any of us know. The latest info is saying he's been to the hospital multiple times for chest pains, headaches and nausea.

I think he's staying in Gainesville for several reasons:
1. He likes it there.
2. His son is in middle school.
3. He's comfortable with the doctors at Shands who likely knew about this situations long before we did.

As far as replacements go, I'd like to see Stoops or possibly Butch Davis, although Butch Davis would not be a popular choice in Gainesville.

I hope he's okay. This game really is just entertainment for us.

He needs to set realistic expectations for himself and quit worrying about this stuff.

Coach Meyer... just sign up for VN. It's free and you can take all sorts of frustrations out here.

That would be tough to pull off without anyone finding out. The man is a rock star in college football.

am i the only person who heard them say that he has no immediate health concerns on espn? seems like that sentence is being generally ignored.
and how could a top sec coach have three heart attacks throughout a season and keep it quiet? that is rediculous.

But it is not life threating. Something is not right with this. I cannot put my finger on it, but there has to be something more to this.

May God bless you and good luck on a long, full healthy life Urban Meyer. Had you not been so gosh darn good, I wouldn't have had to cheer so vehemently against you...

Yes, this. I asked earlier if it was serious enough for him to step down, why would he still coach the bowl game? Maybe I'm stretching there, but it seems if it was enough for him to step down, he wouldn't coach the bowl.

Wonder how much the Doc is making under the table by 1) keeping a mid-season heart attack under wraps or 2) going along with a grand ploy to get Meyer an out of UF without losing face now that boy wonder is gone.

probably just a huge relief to himself and less pressure for the bowl game. he's "out" now, he can simply enjoy the next week.
but as pantone said, he's still coaching the bowl game. if the health problem was serious enough, he should stop coaching immediately.

if he was going to coach the bowl game anyway, just make the announcement january 2 or after the national title game or something.

When I first heard the report, I couldn't have agreed more with you. But now that I think about it more, and more of the story is coming out, I do think it is possible that he is just placing family first now. He won't ever have to worry about money again, and he is in a place that his family appears to be happy. Why not go out when things just seem right to you and your family. I'm hoping that this post doesn't come back to bite me in the future. I guess only the future will tell.

Sometimes Chest pains are a byproduct of panic attacks...
