US may have killed Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani

I was about to say, someone mentioned a post earlier about his bag still on the turnstile at the airport and what's left of him fiitting in it.

After that attack I'm not sure you could fill a Dixie cup with what is left.

That wasn't real, it was a joke.

Due to the SAM coverage around Iran, the strategy would be to utilize FA-18 Hornets equipped with AGM-88 Harm missiles to take out the SAM sites and radars, since an aircraft that could get in and get out quickly would be needed.

A-10s could be used against armor, infantry, and AAA threats.

F-16s can also be used for SEAD and CAS, but they couldn't be operated off a carrier in the Persian Gulf and they don't have the same durability of an A-10.

Just a hypothetical Air Strike Package.

All true. SAM sites dont count out the good ole USAF though. F15Es, B2 stealth, F22s, supposed to be F35s can all be involved in taking out SAMs and AAA ...we tend to Tomahawk the crap out of the sandbox before we put pilots in harm's way these days though.. a policy I strongly support.
AC-130 Gunship?

My money is on an Apache hovering. Volleys are too close together from roughly the same space...Nose cannon, something bigger, then Hellfire rockets. IMO...I know the Apaches were the 1st craft we had with "look down, shoot down" link between the helmet and autocannon... 3rd round looks like Hellfire rockets, not sure about the other round ? Regardless what an awesome display...everything in that area probably half a football field nothing but rubble and smoke. Wow

Apparently that gun is used on multiple aircraft, interesting that a chopper could maintain stability to keep the rounds on target. Then again when you send that many downrange accuracy isn't nearly as important.

The A-10 GAU-8 30mm gun is not used on a Little Bird helo
The A-10 was built around the GAU8

I thought it was warthogs that made that distinguished sound?

It is. Not sure what sounds so similar on this apache. Will have to research it.

The gun on an A10 warthog is soooo big, they actually build the airplane around the gun for all practical purposes. Pilots have to be careful to maintain enough airspeed or the recoil from it can cause them to stall. They also use high density depleted uranium rounds mixed in to pierce armor...they will go right thru tanks and destroy them with kinetic energy. High explosive rounds are also interspersed for killing armor. It really is like a flying tank...the pilot sits in a "bathtub" of heavy armor so ground fire cant harm him/her...the wings are covered in a tarp like material so enemy rounds pass straight thru without doing much damage. The flight controls are redundant with true mechanical backups...so of it loses hydraulics due to a shot up line or pump, the pilot can still fly the plane home controlling it mechanically...like driving with no power steering. They have been flown home with an engine blown off or a wing nearly completely gone. You can see some pictures online of planes that you would think could never have flown home.

When it comes to simply doing its job and doing it AMAZINGLY well, the A10 is likely the finest aircraft ever built. Nothing ever built even come close to hunting tanks, destroying field guns (AAA etc), or close air support for boots on the ground. I could watch videos all day long of those birds in action. To be a taliban or other enemy soldier and hear an A10 coming has got to be the most blood curtling fear. ...kiss your butt goodbye time.

What you might have heard, if it was an Apache, is a 30 mm automatic M230 Chain Gun.

We were watching videos last night of the C130 angel of death.... Impressive.

The original video was an AH-6 Little Bird with a side mounted Gatling gun. Probably 20mm. The AH6 weighs 1500 lbs and the GAU8 weighs 4000 lbs just for perspective.

The M230 is not a Gatling gun.

AC130...awesome firepower...

The ultimate "Drive By" killer...

I will probably get roasted due to everyone's like of the A-10, but if we are using this in a conflict with Iran, something has really gone wrong. As you mentioned, it is CAS and tank killer. I would hope we have no personnel in Iran to need to provide CAS, unless maybe SF. If armor is rolling or amassing that indicates a major ground war. Now I could see it against ground forces in Iraq as CAS.
It will be a strategic air campaign in Iran.
It will be heavy bombers with massive ordinance to take out nuclear facilities and oil refineries if desired. This is the strategic priority but SAM sites and Iranian AF needs to be knocked down.
SAM sites hit with F-16 Wild Weasels and F-35's. F-35's, F-15E's and F/A-18's for military sites, ships, runways and aircraft. EA-18 Growlers for Electronic Attack. F-22's for Air Superiority. Tomahawks everywhere. Maybe some Apaches near Iranian border just like in GW2.
