Here is how the scholarship reductions will affect USC:
This is assuming USC loses ZERO players to attrition, career ending injuries, or early entry to the NFL Draft. So in reality, things will be much worse than this. It also doesn’t take walk-ons into account.
2010: 109 total players on the roster, 75 of those will be players who were awarded a scholarship out of HS or JUCO. The other 34 are either walk-ons, players who have earned a scholarship, or transfers. They still get 85 scholarships for 2010 so 10 of those 34 will be awarded a scholarship.
2011: 103 total players on the roster, 76 of those will be players who were awarded a scholarship out of HS or JUCO. The other 27 are either walk-ons, players who have earned a scholarship, or transfers. The have 75 scholarships available meaning one player must give up their scholarship. This is assuming the maximum allowed 15 are signed for 2011 and no Juniors declare early.
2012: 85 total players on the roster. 73 of those will be players who were awarded a scholarship out of HS or JUCO. The other 12 are either walk-ons, players who have earned a scholarship, or transfers. They have 75 scholarships available meaning they have room to give 2 walk ons scholarships. This is assuming the maximum allowed 15 are signed for 2011 and no Juniors declare early.
2013: 79 total players on the roster. 75 of those will be players who were awarded a scholarship out of HS or JUCO. The other four are either walk-ons, players who have earned a scholarship, or transfers. They have 75 scholarships available meaning all 75 will get a scholarship. This is assuming the maximum allowed 15 are signed for 2011 and no Juniors declare early.
2014: 45 returning scholarship players. The players in the incoming 2010 Freshman class who are redshirted and stay all five years will add to this number. If all 20 players did this then USC would need to sign 20 players in 2014 to get to the 85 mark. If none of the 2010 class is still around in 2014, USC will need to sign 40 players in 2014 to get to the 85 mark. Most likely it will be around 6-12, meaning USC will need a class of around 28-34 to fill the 85 scholarships.
Here is the breakdown by class for the 2010 season, including walk ons (number of scholarship players in parentheses):
