USU Scrimmage

Lol I know I'm just keeping a dumb argument going and I apologize, but when I read things like this it's too good to pass up.

This came from the guy who goes by "ficklez" on VN and tries to act hardcore when he goes over there. Now remember he keeps saying he thinks they will just atleast keep it close while posting here. This is what he says over there:

"And loud? Are all you hillbillies gon be yehawwwin when it's 24-3 in the second quarter and you turn the ball over yet again? Don't think so."

"I can't wait for this game. If u.t. (The real UT is Texas) players are as self-assured as their fans are, it'll be a long game. We may have a new line to break in, but then again, we don't have the #2 rated COLLEGE-not high school-but COLLEGE OLB lining up against us. We're also not lining up against a top-10 run defense. And you can tell Travis Stephens to check the 40 times from our pro-day. I'm 36 and I can still outrun Travis Stephens. We don't have to face a Heisman candidate, or a PROVEN Parade all-American receiver. As for Neyland, I highly doubt y'all will start the season with as much energy as was displayed at Auburn coming off a natty. Your young guys will get punched in the mouth, won't believe it until it's too late, and USU wins going away. Thanks for paying us to come and beat you, don't schedule any more MWC teams."

Ok I'm done. Guys, let's beat the hell out of them. I truly hope this game is a blowout.

Thanks buddy. Got a little lazy.

These guys remind me of Vandy fans a bit. Never had any success and just go ape shiite when they have a couple winning seasons beating no one. Waaayyyyy too much arrogance for accomplishing waaayyyyy too little.

Like KB, I very seldom go to other teams' boards or really care what they say. But this could be a special case.

What would really be amusing is if enough of us went over there to "Borg" their board... assimilate it.

Their fans do not seem to understand the meaning of "historical anomaly". In the last 70 years, I believe they have had 3 or more consecutive winning seasons on 3 occasions. I believe the longest streak was 5 back in the 70's.

During the same period, UT has only twice had 3 consecutive seasons with a losing record with the current 4 year span the worst.

It is extremely unlikely that either of these shifts indicate anything lasting. UT will not stay down. USU will not stay up.

CFN believes that this season will vindicate the conclusion in your analysis as the vols rise from #72 to #32 and the aggies fall from #28 to #54.

32. Tennessee (CFN: A Team on the Verge of really big things)
2013 Record: 5-7, 2013 Final CFN Ranking: 72

Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: Butch Jones is building a powerhouse. The recruiting has been fantastic, the overall athleticism and skill are being ramped up, and the pieces are in place to come up with a good season with six of the top seven tacklers back and some good young players to build around on offense.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: About that offense – it needs a bit of a reboot. Four starters are gone up front, the quarterback situation needs to be settled, and the receiving corps is really, really young. There’s reason to be excited and there are big things happening, but …
The 2014 Team Is Trending … 2015. The program is at least a year away – it takes two-to-four years for a recruiting class to kick in – and while things are getting better, it’s still a process. Impatient Vol fans might be ready for things to change now, but once things start to work, the results will be consistent.

54. Utah State
2013 Record: 9-5, 2013 Final CFN Ranking: 28

Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Aggies managed to get to the Mountain West title game and come up with a great nine-win season despite losing star QB Chuckie Keeton. Fortunately, the torn ACL came early enough that it had time to heal, but there are options now in case he’s not quite ready. Defensively, the linebacking corps should be among the best in the league.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: There’s too much turnover. Can the program reload despite losing C Tyler Larsen and four starters on the offensive front? Three starters are gone in the secondary and the defensive line needs some retooling.
The 2014 Team Is Trending … even. Considering how lousy Utah State football was for so long, the idea of reloading might seem a bit crazy, but that’s where things are at now. Everything moved on after Gary Andersen took off to Wisconsin, and Matt Wells has done a great job of keeping things going. Expect another rock-solid year.

he said our young guys will get punched in the mouth lol? thats funny. they are the ones with the 150 and 170lbs WRs and DBs they wont be able to catch our young guys. if they truly had the talent they said they have then those kids wouldnt be in the MWC. its easy to look bad azz when your playing scrubs every week.

this sounds so similiar to Cincy, NCSU, Montana, and Cal. the only diff is all of those teams except maybe Montana were better than USU.

Lol so did I considering I didn't even bother pasting it into my post hehe. NP

I mean it would be one thing if it was just that they were excited to play such a big game with so much exposure, especially with the schedule change and all. But most of them seem to actually expect to come here and win. I just don't know where their confidence comes from

I'm not a fan of hoping JC production turns to FBS production. We have a guy who had 49 for 757 yards in JC and he won't crack the 2 deep. we also have a guy coming in who switched from west virginia. I hope he has talent.

You may not be hoping for your JUCO WR who had 49 catches for 757 yds to contribute to the Aggies. No worries.

Our JUCO who had 90 catches, 1600 yds and 12 tds in 10 games will start at slot and will be very difficult to deal with. I suspect we'll all see that August 31.

This is par for the course for usu. Last year, the same list had us drop from 25 to 80. As you can see, we finished quite a bit better than 80 on their list.

I think we can both safely conclude two things: You know more about UT-Knoxville than I do, I know more about USU than you do. Also a given here- we are both biased towards our side.

You seem to be going to great lengths to demonstrate that USU will be down this year and UT will be up. Your most recent argument is on program history. USU has made a commitment to football never before seen by the administration. New and nice facilities have been built, coaches are earning more money, more tickets are being sold.

USU recruits poorly even when compared to our peers in the MW, yet recently we have been beating a lot of these teams. Why is this? It is because of the development of our players and coaching. These two factors are tough to measure and one of the reasons why USU will continue upward.

Here is one of the many problems with the current polling system. People have a very difficult time ranking dissimilar objects. While a great deal of effort is put in to appearing objective and rational, the default is to count the amount of wins and ignore quality of competition.

Here is a more in depth discussion from my viewpoint.

If I Bleed Orange, I'm Bled Out: The Problem with the bowls, with polls, and a solution.

Huge difference between beating a team that has four years of recruiting in the 60 range, and one that is top 15.

absolutely true. I don't think we've been in the top 100 in my 8 years as a fan though. I would wager that 90% of our wins come against teams with a higher rating in recruiting. None of them are as high as Tennessee's was last year though. But tennessee has been top 20 for 6 years and has failed to capitalize, so there is obviously more to it than just stars.

one thing that really hurts USU in these ratings, and helps tennessee, that plays into this all is how the system works. When a player commits to USU, he usually is bumped down half a star. When a player commits to tennesee or alabama or cal or heck even houston, they get a .5 to 1 star bump. this is because scouting sites use a combo of who has offered as a guide for the stars. For example, we had a 2 star commit who committed and changed to oregon who was moved to a 3 on some sites and a 4 on another the following day. no new game tape, no new camp. just committing to oregon.

generally, it's an ok system. the best schools offer the best players. but when you are recruiting in utah and idaho and nevada, states without bcs schools, the players aren't noticed by the bigger schools like they are in their own backyard in california, florida, georgia, etc. so better players tend to fly under the radar. then you have the guys at smaller schools who fly under the radar in texas or florida. Chuckie Keeton is an example. They're hard to find and pan out less often than 5 stars, I'm sure. We'll never recruit like tennessee does. We probably will never make a natty game, even if we play football for 1,000 more years. Are our players good enough to beat any team on any given saturday (or sunday)? with luck, yes we could pull out a shocker on some great team. Are our players good enough to beat a team with a 2nd year coach implementing his system, in the first week, with a weak quarterback, a new OL, a new DL? absolutely. Is it more likely that we win than not? probably not. But I'd say it's likely enough to matter.

I don't know if we have had a single 4 star commit, ever. we've beaten teams with them, but not many.

I have enjoyed your posts but let me point something out. When you say "Tennessee has had a top 20 class over 6 years yet failed to take advantage(I paraphrase) it shows the drastic separation of the SEC from the rest of football. A consistent top 25 class nationally will be good enough to rank you 6-8 in the SEC recruiting final tally. Oddly enough, that's about where we finished...

i get that, but i also think it's irrelevant to the usu-tennessee match-up. auburn was number 1 in the nation IIRC the year we played them. for the same reasons, I'd be a lot more nervous playing tennessee in two or three years than next year.

Also keep in mind that only 11 players from that 2012 class are still on the roster. Of those 11 only about 4 are gonna see action in the 2 deep this year. 2012 was also the year that we didn't sign a single OL....that's partially why we're having to replace all 5 starters there. The last head coach before Butch Jones, inarguably the worst in our school's modern history, really did a number decimating our football program. Quite honestly, that's why we're in the midst of a complete rebuild and why the early line is UT only -6.5.

I hope that doesn't happen. It certainly would say a lot of unflattering things about Vols fans. It's their board, if they want to talk about the best recipes for poo patties to go along a urino-tea or anything else on their own board, why should we care? Doing what you suggest just reinforces the idea that Vols fans are dumb rednecks and act like it. So please don't do this.

Your favorite teams have me curious Woodsman- the Redskins AND the Packers? How does this happen?

We know all about that coach. He was in our conference. He did an absolutely amazing job at tech IMO. Surprised he was so bad at UT but there's no arguing it
