An '85 Miami team that didn't have their championship destiny in their hands. They had to beat Tennessee and hope Oklahoma beat Penn State and the voters gave them the nod over OU. All the 2001 Miami team had to do was beat the team in front of them.

They didn't have their destiny in their hands?????? What are you smoking?

I don't care who was on their team. They played a pathetic schedule. Tennessee beat their common opponent, Syracuse, too.

And Nebraska lost 62-36 in the Big 12 game.
You don't care who was on their team? Gee, I always thought players were an important part of the game. Given that Miami has no history of success, they would have simply cowered at the sight of the UT uniform, kind of like they did when they beat us within an inch of our lives in Knoxville the next year.

How dense are you? Penn State was undefeated and ranked Number 1 going into the bowl games. They were playing Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. OU was #2 in the polls. Miami had to a. Have Penn State lose, and b. Beat UT soundly enough to remind the pollsters that they had beaten Oklahoma in Norman earlier in the year. I think that constitutes not having your destiny in your own hands.

You seem to think talent is irrelevant. How do you think football games are won? Black Magic? Backroom deals with the New World Order? Metaphysical random selection?

This round goes to Hat . . . I vividly remember Captain Helmet Hair politicking before the game for the ABC cameras about why his team should be #1 . . . Nevermind that they had a game to play.

I think I wore a remote control out switching back and forth between the Sugar and Orange Bowls that night.

No. I'm just justifying why our 2001 team "wouldnt' have been killed" by Miami

Would we have given them a better game than Nebraska? Absolutely, because we would have been able to move the ball a little bit. Could we have beaten Miami in Pasadena? No way. There wasn't a team in the country that could have played them a competitive game on a neutral field in '01.

Well, does that mean UT would have been "killed" by Miami? Miami didn't play a tough schedule that year. It was actually easy. So, there were teams out there that would have played them tougher than Troy State. MTSU beat Troy State worse than Miami did. Does that mean MTSU was better than Miami? NO

Are you unfamiliar with the concept of logic? First, you say players don't matter. Then you follow it up with some bizarre reference to MTSU and Troy State that you try to turn into some sort of quasi-transitive property arguement on behalf of UT's chances against Miami. If you can look at the '01 rosters for UT and Miami and realistically think UT would have had a shot, you need to put the bottle and the mushrooms down, turn off the Grateful Dead, and sleep it off.

All Miami had to do was win.

They didn't.

Oklahoma beat Penn St

Miami beat Oklahoma

Tenn beat Miami

1st off, who said the players didn't matter?

2nd, Prove that Miami could have "killed" Tennessee due to their roster

So, you know the pollsters would have jumped Miami over Oklahoma how? Have the hallucinogens that make you think the '01 UT team could have beaten Miami enured you with the ability to read the minds of pollsters from 20+ years ago? Furthermore, the Sugar Bowl ended before the Orange Bowl. So, at no point did Miami have the ball in their court.

If Miami would have beaten Tennessee, they would have won the NC

Reading minds has nothing to do with this thread.

I know the Sugar Bowl ended about an hour before the Orange Bowl.

You did. See post #75, where you say you don't care who played for Miami. I'm not really in a mood to break down the entire Miami roster, but I'll indulge your silliness a little bit. Willis McGahee would have been far and away the best player on UT's offense. He was on Miami's bench. Kellen Winslow, on Miami's bench. Antrell Rolle, on Miami's bench. Ed Reed-NFL Defensive Player of the Year and future Hall of Famer. Who is the comparable player on UT's defense? That was a good UT team. They weren't in Miami's weight class.

It might have been a close vote, but it stands to reason that Oklahoma would have gotten more mileage out of beating Penn State than Miami would have gotten for beating us.

I guess the pollsters have confided in you that they would have jumped Miami over OU? Otherwise, you're either reading minds or guessing.

the 91 ND game would of been great if I hadn't gotten mad just before the half and turned off the TV. Man was I stunned when I heard the score on the radio that night.

I read post # 75. I don't see where I said players don't matter. I said I don't care who was on their team. I don't believe that NFL careers have anything to do with what happens in college. I learned that when a certain UT team with many NFL players lost to Memphis in 1996. I also don't think you can say that Miami would've "killed" Tennessee in 2001 just because who was on their team. THEY DIDN'T PLAY ANYBODY!!

Again, MTSU beat Troy worse than Miami did that year.

And Nebraska got beat 62-36 before going to the NC

Did you not watch the Sugar Bowl?

They clearly state that if Miami would've beaten Tennessee, then they would win the NC.

Gee, that wouldn't be because they were televising the Miami game and trying to keep viewers from switching over to the Orange Bowl's #1 vs. #2 matchup would it?
