UT Football.........

Did you not watch the Sugar Bowl?

They clearly state that if Miami would've beaten Tennessee, then they would win the NC.

First of all, it was 20 years ago, so I'm not going to pretend like I have the commentary memorized verbatim. I just remember the controversey being that if Miami and Oklahoma won, Miami's claim was going to be that they had beaten Oklahoma and Oklahoma's claim was going to be that they had beaten the #1 team, Penn Sate.

I don't think it was a sure thing either way.

I read post # 75. I don't see where I said players don't matter. I said I don't care who was on their team. I don't believe that NFL careers have anything to do with what happens in college. I learned that when a certain UT team with many NFL players lost to Memphis in 1996. I also don't think you can say that Miami would've "killed" Tennessee in 2001 just because who was on their team. THEY DIDN'T PLAY ANYBODY!!
Again, MTSU beat Troy worse than Miami did that year.
And Nebraska got beat 62-36 before going to the NC
Syracuse and Washington were both ranked when they played Miami. Miami beat Syracuse 59-0 and Washington went down 65-7. Exactly what was the UT-Syracuse score that year? Given the greatness of that UT team I assume it must have been roughly 84-0.

Thus further proving my point that Miami did not control their own destiny.

Gee, that wouldn't be because they were televising the Miami game and trying to keep viewers from switching over to the Orange Bowl's #1 vs. #2 matchup would it?

No. It was actually before either bowl began.

Jimmy Johnson was worried about his hair and how his team would win the NC before the game was played.

Jimmy said, "Well, we beat Oklahoma AT Oklahoma, so we should be considered the National Champion"

Then Switzer said, "Well, Florida beat Miami, so Florida should get some consideration."

This was BEFORE the Sugar Bowl kicked off.

Penn State wasn't #1.

The whole contreversy was between # 1 Oklahoma and #2 Miami

And over on NBC, Don Criqui and Bob Trumpy were talking about how their game would decide the National Champion. When would you try to pull in viewers, the middle of the third quarter? It's called "setting the stage." TV types are big on that.

That's the whole point though . . . Miami beating Tennessee wouldn't have done anything but put things in the pollsters' hands and Oklahoma would have probably gotten the nod anyway.

You're ripping Hat for a hypothetical prediction and then making one yourself??

Well, you just shot your credibility. Penn State was undefeated and ranked #1 in both polls. If you can't get simple historical facts correct, don't waste everyone's time.

It was 20 years ago, but I think that's wrong.

Tennessee beat Syracuse 33-9 that year.

If other scores are relevant to you, MTSU beat Troy St worse than Miami

Penn St was 5-6
Rutgers was 2-9
Pitt was 7-5
Troy St was 7-4
Florida State was 8-4
West VA was 3-8
Temple was 4-7
BC was 8-4
Syracuse was 10-3 (common opp)
Washington was 8-4
Va Tech was 8-4
and Nebraska was 10-2, losing 62-36 in the Big 12 CG

Whatever the case . . . neither prediction matters because we took the gas pipe against LSU in 2001 and beat the crap out of Miami in 1986 . . . which getting back on topic was my favorite game.

Sorry, buddy. But you're wrong.
In fact, I'll make a little wager. If Penn State wasn't number 1 in both major polls going into the bowls, I'll leave the board for 30 days. If they were #1, you're gone for a month. Deal?

No, but if I have a bowel movement in the next 15 seconds, you have to leave the board for the next month and I get to keep on posting

dig?

Would that bowel movement be caused by the crow you're eating? I hear it's tough on the old GI tract.

"Dig?" Who are you, Henry Winkler?
