UT Martin Baseball ?

Coach Corn has my vote,He is a great HC for UTM he is hungry. I do not think Coach Delmonico will be a good fit for UTM ,I have spoke to many Ex baseball players from UT and they all in agreement that he will not be a good coach for a small D1 program he has a huge ego and money drives him. He will not work with the present players he will get new players and will start bringing Juco players next year guarantee you.

They should win at least 27 games this year with the roster they have now, They have good pitching they just need TLC, The pitching coach last year was not good at all ,they had good pitching last year...Bubba would had done great if he had a great pitching coach but UTM is to cheap to spend money on a solid pitching coach ,hopefully the new Pitching Coach will work with the pitchers we have at this time, which on a grading scale in D1 baseball ,,,,,,,,, 1 to 10 they are a solid 7.

Mr Bruin with all do respect A new pitching coach that knows how to work with all his pitchers will. Why because a great pitching coach will work with all his pitchers not just the top 4 like they did last year, You are as good as your last man on the bull pen ,

Anyone go to the open forum today....or know anyone who did go? It would be interesting to know how many people showed up and what kind of questions were asked. I heard Delmonico was meetin with the players at 9:30

He is a great salesman ,He is a great coach but his ego is second to none, I hope he has change . He likes to be the center of attention all the time...Not humble at all for a small D1 school.

Heard from someone who was at the open forum. Rod Delmonico was very smooth and talked a lot about his days at UT and coaching the Netherlands team in the World Baseball Tournament several years ago. Did some name dropping about former players and other contacts he has.

Spoke about having to get players on campus who can compete at a high level. Mentioned brining in top JUCO players and adding in HS players around that.

The people at the open forum appeared to be trying to convince RD to come to UTM. People in Martin and on campus appear to be excited about the prospect of getting Delmonico.

However, Corn was very impressive on Wednesday and impressed everyone with his energy and desire to be at UTM. He also had a plan to build the program and has a recent history of success at Columbia CC. His contacts in the state's JUCO would be very helpful.

Tony Gary trying to get back into the mix and has spoken to a committee member and the AD. After an earlier skype interview, the committee was apparently very high on Gary but when he withdrew, they cooled on him. At this point, it's unclear if he will be given a shot at the job or if the committee will choose between Corn and Delmonico.

At this point, it is unclear how the committee feels but from the person I spoke to, the community appears to be more excited about Delmonico.

By the time I got there, the forum had already started. Should've just went on in but didn't. I found it odd, other than the fact that Delmonico must really want back in badly, that he'd agree to an open forum. Maybe that's the norm now; just seems odd to me.

Coach Corn is the best HC for UTM trust me ,If you want somebody that is very hungry and will turn the program around long term Corn is the man guarantee you, Delmonico will last 3 years maximum at UTM .He is not a UTM coach you need somebody young and hungry that will stay in the program many years Coach Corn is the Coach UTM needs, Yes Delmonico is a great Coach but not for UTM . Now if UTM and Mr Dane wants somebody to turn the program in less than 3 years Delmonico is the man but expect him not to stick around after that ,This will be a temporary job for him trust me. I said it first .. Also with Coach Delmonico,,, Coach Goss and the new pitching Coach Eber will start looking for a new job next year because Delmonico will bring his boys ...

3 yrs is high. He only last that long if the 5 interviews he takes every summer see through his act. There won't be a college coach in the country that wants another job worse than this guy.

Think laneK in Knoxville and that's the same kind of fit this is.

100% agree

Both would probably get other opportunities with a turnaround of this magnitude.

IMO Rod D doesn't have to do much at all to be hired elsewhere. It's always easier to get hired when you have a job and I think he is more appealing to other schools just because he would be employed(this would be his only motivation for taking the job IMO). Corn would have to do much more to have a shot at anther job.

One point to consider is how would 5 yrs at UTM effect Rod's retirement from the University of Tennessee system. This may have something to do with his interest in this position.

This job is going to pay 60-70. The next job would be 100k plus at the very least. No shot He is turning down the next job for tn retirement.

I played at Jackson State CC and at Tennessee-Martin in the mid-80s, and, from a distance, it would appear that what is needed is a candidate like Corn, not Delmonico.

Delmonico's arrogant, left UT in a mess, and appears to me to only have interest in the job because he's 5 years away from retirement in the UT system. The school's not a good fit for someone who's going to act as though it oughtta consider itself lucky to have him in their midst.

Corn was a small-school player and coach, and he's done wonderfully at Columbia, continuing on from what Messrs. Painter and Hall started---they recruited me as well.

It'll be interesting to see what other candidates, if any, emerge.

There is an equally important story here, and that is:

why on Earth did the UT Martin president fire Cates at the end of the summer? what was the provocation that had materialized since the end of the year? why wasn't it done then? why hamstring a candidate pool by waiting til late July?

and why is the (admittedly buffoonish) AD making public statements that he and the president didnt agree on Cates' dismissal?

And, for the record, Cates is a class act...........they just didnt give him enough support.
