UT Martin Baseball ?

Sounds like David really hit a home run on campus yesterday. Second hand info of course but heard AD and Committee extremely impressed. Timing for him and large family appears to be main issue.

Should be over by Friday at latest.

I hope the AD will support the new coach who ever it is the way they should and fund the program the way it should be funded,,, I hope the peanut butter and jelly days stop, and I hope the days of asking The Air force Academy for food Stop which it was embarrassing 3 years ago, and I hope the days of spring break days when cafeteria is closed at UTM and baseball players are on Campus have food for the players 3 meals a day, that needs to stop we are the laughing stock of D1 program, You see all that needs to stop, and this was the Administration fault or they where not aware of it,or they knew and did nothing about it. Go UTM lets make the program be the best in the OVC we have the players to do it trust me.

98, thanks for the update on how it went yesterday. I had not heard how that went. However, I do know that in an initial skype interview, the committee was very impressed with David. In fact, he was probably the front runner for the job until he pulled out and came back.

It appears that it will be offered to Tony David based on what all has happened and the committees impressions. My guess is if he wasn't seriously considering it then he wouldn't have bothered to make the visit. So it just comes down to moving his family if he wants to do it. I think the committee has been very forth coming about what it pays and the commitment to the program to all the candidates.

I'm hearing that Tony David was offered the job earlier this week and he turned it down last night. Apparently, he wants the job but wanted to wait until after next season to start. It is very doubtful that UTM will hire an interim coach but with this search, who knows.

Mr Dane I think you should hire Coach Delmonico or Coach Corn but please do it today sir, I think after I have analyze every coach I think Coach Delmonico will be the best fit for the program at this time he will bring a lot of money and respect to the school. This is base on my personal and many other people I have spoken with today. God bless UTM

All people involved seem to feel David was clear best option for the situation. I have heard he was the only unanimous option of the three. Sounds like he was definitely offered the job but was having some difficulty working through some issues to be able to move family immediately. I think they are willing to settle for one of the other two. If Delmonico doesn't work out, then they may settle for Corn. Zero chance that Delmonico stays more than a couple of years but it could be helpful. Or possibly let Goss take it for a year and work it out next summer.

Who ever it is it should be done today or tomorrow, Mr Dane you should be fair with the kids and make a decision Asap, You are making the situation worse and you are making the school look like circus ,Sir that's why you are the AD to make big decisions like this act like it.

The team should have not had the meeting with coach David or any of the other candidates for that matter if they have no imput on the hire. Coach David made a good impression and now the players are looking at being rejected by a quality coach even if the timing is the issue. My opinion is mixed on Coach Delmonico. The dialog here both pro and con has been well covered. Coach Goss would do a better job with the returning roster than Coach Corn. I have talked to parents and former players in Columbia including guys who were starters who acknowledge that he knows the game but would not be excited about playing for him again and sure would not be thrilled to transfer to a program where he was head coach. The talk of him knowing the connection for Juco transfers turns to a negative if you know that. If a better program is to be built finding then retaining talent is important. Don't compound bad timing with a bad hire. The team and the program deserve better. Guess everyone has an opinion. Just had to put mine out there.

I think that Coach Delmonico is the best fit at this time guarantee you he will turn the program around these year ,Please Mr Dane make the decision by tomorrow you are loosing respect among your peers.

Rumors say Corn has been offered and is still considering the job. My same source didn't hear that Delmonico was offered and rejected but after David turned down the job, apparently, Delmonico was the second choice. So, there is a possibility that Rod was offered and turned it down.

What a circus very disturbing players most feel like they are garbage and nobody wants them,,I hope Delmonico takes the job..

Backwards I heard the same. Definitely sounds like David really liked it and wanted to take the job but couldn't work through some house issue. If they wanted him that much and he wanted to be there seems like a way to work it out some way. Heard the same thing that Delmonico had a lot of demands and they are now onto Corn.

I'm a Tennessee-Martin alum, played there, and know the program and Dane personally.

I can absolutely assure you that Dane has no respect amongst his peers, his administration, or ex-players such as myself.

Somebody told me this morning that Delmonico was offer the job yesterday ,does anybody know?

As I posted earlier, it is believed that Delmonico was offered the job and turned it down. Corn is holding an offer now and UTM is waiting on his response.

The committee made the initial offer to David but they pressed him for an immediate answer and he was not in a position to take the job without totally considering his options.

I said it before, but in an awful timing situation over there for this thing they found the guy they wanted. ANd my understanding is that David made it clear he wanted the job baseball and pay wise but had some issues needed to be worked through with his home. With the time frame, he had to turn it down. Rather than panic and take a guy it appears they didn't exactly want it, may need to look back and the David guy and see what they can figure out. Otherwise, you go short term solution and figure it out next spring.

If David is the right fit- they need to do whatever possible to make it work this year. I do not believe they can afford a short term solution. Some of the posts about Corn do concern me- specifically that his own JUCO players would not want to come play for him.....that is a big red flag.

I still say that the right choice is Coach Delmonico, I have spoken to a few of his X players and I guarantee you he will turn the program around this year not next year with the present players he has now, He will not blame anybody but him, He is a great leader and great leader's will not blame the past or his players and he will not put up with S--- from the administration ,Maybe that's why the AD or the President of UTM are afraid of hiring him.

Some of the thoughts in this thread are as comical as this laughable search has been.

Show me a coach that doesn't have kids that say negative things about them and I will show you a coach that is just beginning a career!

I agree. Every coach has players that are unhappy and so on. Only 8 can play at a time and roughly 7-8 pitchers pitch. So somebody is going to feel like they aren't getting a fair shake. As for the search itself....yes laughable. Still never heard of open forums and all that. Also most coaches do not meet with team unless they have some sort of say to administration on who they like. If Tony David is the best choice they should think long term and just do what it takes to get it done. They should have known that starting process this late in the year was going to come with some issues for any of the candidates. They may have to pony up some extra cash or go above and beyond to help a candidate move. Moving should not be a reason not to hire the right guy. And when it is a factor...they have to give the guy a chance to work it out, not expecting an answer in a few hours of making an offer. They should rent a house for David's family until his sells in Bham or give him some sort of housing allowance on top of his salary to make it work. I know that has been done at other places. Like I said they have to look long term on who is right fit not that it may cost them a little extra upfront.

I do not agree with you at all, If coach David would have wanted the job he would had made it work, How many D1 program are available every year not many so if you are in this profession you have to wait for that break and he got it, If he wanted the job he would have take it, I think he didn't want the job or family issues or what ever. So honestly I do not want anybody as the UTM HC that do not want to be here for any reason ,He comes here and It wont last then next year we are looking for another coach and what a joke that will be. .

My posted opinion of Coach Corn has absolutely zero relationship to playing time or someones poor little johnny. He may the best they can do with a months notice. I respect the opinion of everyone here but I know it won't be "laughable " in the Skyhawk clubhouse and there won't be many high fives if he is named HC. He will win games how successful who knows but the program can do better. Better went back to Samford. There are more good ones out there but not available in September.

A quote from an X player from Coach Corn ,,He is very arrogant and he thinks his Sh_T don't stink and if you are not one of his boys he will ignore you to the point that you want to quit playing for him this is not by one but by 4 X players..

Just because he didn't take the job does not mean that he did not want it. You are correct in that being a HC in DI baseball doesn't happen all the time and some wait many years for the chance. My comment was based on the reports that the AD made and offer and wanted an almost immediate answer. For any coach with a family, mortgage, and kids in school....it isn't as easy as it may appear. If it was an SEC or bigger conference team offering a 6 figure salary it's not that tough of a decision. You have the money to pay two mortgages for a few months...taking the stress off your family ect. It by no means is all about money but it sure helps when it is there. My point being it is a two way street. Yes if he wanted the job he would have found a way to make it work. But if the committee really wanted him they would have found a way to make it work as well. Maybe he would have found a way to make it work if he would have had a few days to work it out and not a few hours. Remember Dr. Rakes is the one who made the decision to do this not the AD Dane. So maybe he should step up and find a way to make it work. From what I gather Coach David turning it down was solely based on moving his family, having to find housing, and sell his house. I said it before it is a fairly easy fix to find him a rental in town while his house is on market and make the transition easier.
